Just "google" origin of Christmas or Saturnalia to get the true facts. Europe was "Christianized" during the dark ages...if you didn't profess to believe in Christ you got you head cut off, etc. There was no choice. Although I'm not a particularly huge proponent of some of the Pagan traditions that have been merged in with Christianity, particularly the Yule Log, certain Wreaths and a few other things, Christmas and Saturnalia are not interchangeable.

Christmas was placed on the 25th of December (Saturnalia was observed on December 17th) on the assumption that Christ's birth occurred 9 months since the Immaculate Conception, which at the time was believed to have been March 25th.

The founding father's stole the format of government that we have from the Scottish Presbyterian Church and then added their own Deist twist on the concept of freedom of religion. The Constitution originally upheld the right of states to have their own official churches, many of which did. If you do some research into the history of the concept of "The Separation of Powers", it is a system of checks and balances that dates back to the pre-Roman Catholic Church (ergo the Catholic Church from during and before the time of Gregory I), where local sovereignty of churches was respected and ecumenical councils were few and dealt only with those issues that affected every single church. The Masonic and Deist founders didn't really do anything all that original.
