  • I have my parents early 80s version of this set, The picture is beautiful.

  • GREAT image

  • The first portable colour television,

with a bit of help from a trolley and a removal van.

And now you can watch TV on your portable phone.

  • Nice television. I thought it looked best though when you were showing us the baseball game.

  • Where would I plug in my digital converter?

  • I used to repair TV sets like these in the day. Met some very shady people who were not above stealing from old women and other crimes We now have 150 more channels and the show programming was better 35 years ago.Broadcast TV will eventually become a feature of the internet. Google TV.

  • the colours look really vibrent (like the Super AMOLED screen)

  • I can see Jack Brickhouse calling a Cubs game on this television set.

  • that has a good picture, and better sound than many new tvs! Too bad you can only tune to ch 3 becuase you have to use a converter box, takes the fun out of turning the knob lol

  • @sonyguy94 LCD TV's have MUCH shorter lifespans than their older counterparts. Although both LCD and Plasma vary by brand. Sony, Vizio, Panasonic, and Toshiba are supposed to be good.

  • impressive for the time!

  • @Feisty1967

And whats your point? Just a smartass comment because you can?

  • @drh4683 Fair comment from Feisty I think. At least you can learn from other people like you're hoping people will do from your videos.

  • @GitarStu

Feisty is poking fun at how I talk, its nothing new, so I don't respect his comment.

  • @drh4683 I didn't read it that way. I read it as a perfectly innocent comment informing you of the correct pronouciation.

  • @Feisty1967 is pronounced "jackASS 1967"

  • @Feisty1967 depends on the country and were your from

  • @Feisty1967 In the U.S., it's pronounced Zeenith.

  • @Feisty1967

I pronounce as ZEEnith. It's a regional thing, and I'm from the midwest. Ohio specifically.

  • you just cant beat these old tv's for that warm color picture they had.

  • This dosen't amaze me... "THE QUALITY WENT IN FOR THE NAME WENT ON"!

Thanks for shareing this video of an OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF U.S.A. CRAFTMANSHIP!

Thanks, Dan Gross, Saint Louiis, Mo.

  • All steel cabinet?! You could kill somebody with that thing.

  • mooie ^^

  • Old TVs with dials look a lot better than the boring old buttons of the modern TVs.

  • not to be disrespectful because its a beautiful TV, has a great picture and brings back memories of growing up in the 70s, but it would be ideal for someone like Keith Moon to throw out a hotel window

  • It's interesting all the information you give on these tvs.

  • My parents bought their first color set in 1968. They bought an Admiral. What a piece of crap. Beautiful looking console cabinet. Electronics inside were trash. The set had high voltage issues from the start. It actually caught fire twice. Went through 4 picture tubes in 10 years. I knew my parents should have bought a Zenith.

  • Hi I would like to know if is it possible to change to a Radio or TV, "the" "normal film capacitors" for "capacitors" of "Teflon film?"

  • I had one of these...restored it in the mid 90s with a rebuilt CRT and those darn three pin disc caps in the vertical (the integrator--i hated them)---a great set but could never get the convergence perfect--even with a new NOS convergence diode set.

Gave it away....but still have the 25" Zenith console from 68-69.

  • first catv then to analog tv

  • lol the deal or no deal background stuff looks all futuristic on that old tv XD

  • @EmulationExpert2009 That was from a special episode where they visited the international versions.

  • this is an aweosme tv.isnt that the one they dropped from the plane in a commercial?

  • where bought zou that

  • GULP! portable...:D...

  • It has a handle on it. Back then that meant it was portable.

  • @kraizer40k - lol. It just meant it wasn't a "console" television, which were basically pieces of furniture, with the television being encased in a large wooden cabinet. We used to polish the television cabinet. lol

  • I have a 1982 Zenith System 3 we bought in early 1983, it has been in daily use since then. I'll be 44 in July and I'm still using the same set I did when I was 16.

  • Don't get me wrong, I'm a big zenith fan. However, I'm most partial to the ones they sold in the mid 80's, the ones that came in bold red/blue/etc colors common of 80s electronics. Those things are rad.

Though I also have an aqua blue zenith b&w portable, and that's a keeper, as well.

  • how is tht the first one

  • Zenith did not offer a personal portable color TV to the market until this model in 1968. I learned this through both service and marketing literature.

  • bet that was not cheap

  • where can I get a TV stand like that one?

BTW, Nice Zenith. Flat screen is nice but they don't build quality like this anymore.

  • I just love these older TV sets. They often have all sorts of advanced settings available for you to adjust on-the-fly with easily accessible knobs (color bias, black level, etc.) Plus, older video games, VHS and CED videodiscs look great on them, if you're into that sort of thing. And most old TV sets are still going, whereas today's TVs (nearly all of which are made in China) are NOT built to last.

  • My grandparents had the next model up of this set, the 19" screen one from about 1970 or so. They kept that until the early 90's when I inherited it for a time. By the time it kicked off, you really couldn't get them repaired through normal TV repairers so we got rid of it sadly. it was a great set though!!

  • wow thats a 1968 get out this tv looks in great condition it looks brain new did you buy it new and I have an 1985 Zenith System 3 But i need a new color tube do you know where i could find it

  • Now that's a t.v. ;) oh, what beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I collect old t.v.s, I have 6 of them so far. I mean really, why would you spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a new ugly-looking t.v. when you can go to a thrift store and buy an old t.v. that's a million times better for under $10?????? I mean, why?????? Old t.v.s just plain RULE!!!!! Especially the 'knob' kind ;) Love your video :)

  • I don't know what it is, but tube televisions, and old screens give better colors than modern tubes and lcd's... I have seen it... for myself: living colours!

  • @paranormaalutrecht So true!!

  • @paranormaalutrecht not anymore seen an OLED

  • that tvbetter color then some of CRT TV that is walmart right now

  • Very informative video. Nice TV.

  • What a great video, that was my Dad's 1st color tv and I remember it like it was yesterday. What I would do - to be able to find someone selling these in my area. Are you in the Cincinnati area by chance? I noticed the Red's game and the CW channel. Great video-5 stars!

  • very clear set

  • great old set. i had no problems with the tuner. ceramic cap in the hor. circuit would open up.

  • I had the 19" version and mine the only thing that died was a Cap the Keeps the Vertical noise out of the sound and is also without it you see a white spot in the upper middle off the screen.

  • yeah i remember that! the "Deal or no deal" it was shooted here in the philippines!!!

  • My God, I fixed so many of those when I worked as a tech for a small shop in '75-'76. What a son-of-a-gun the tuner was to clean when they got noisy... The CRT is in very nice shape - you must be firing it up now and then to keep it from getting gassy. The most common problem I saw was degaussing thermistor explosions.

  • Seems strange watching a 2008 program on a vintage TV. Like it's in the future...lol

  • A lot less "channel surfing" in those days.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Nice to see how NTSC behaves at fine tuning: Face colour changes from orange to pink ! Saw that effect also in Mexico City in 2004, when I tuned a NTSC televiseon the very first time ! We don't have that effect on analogue PAL-system, we used in Germany: Colour keeps the same.

  • I could almost SMELL the chassis (the hot tubes et al) whe you went the back of the set; that was my favorite part! Thanks for the memories and the vid!

  • does anybody hate technology in a way

  • how money was it originally? ...and now?

  • I would guess between $350.00 to $400.00. A lot of money in 1968.

  • ive got one of the original sony portable sets its a sony 1330ub works perfectly exept for a minor frame fault

  • wow, I never knew an old TV would have this good a picture. Definitely not HD, but a great analog picture.

  • Zenith was the best with those rectangular fuses for ac and the cathode of the H output. when the focus coils went bad on Rca's i redesigned it like a zenith. I used the Zenith stick rectifier and conected it to the Hot plug lead then to the focus lead . perfect focus when i was 14 years old

  • So Tell Why Didn't Get Cable From Comcast Service It Might Be Good!

  • I wonder though how many programmes were actually broadcast in colour in 1968...

  • Actually about 60% of shows were in color in 1968. NBC went all color at about this time.

  • I want to know if this is for sale

  • Ah, just like old times!

  • Those would probably cost as much back then as a HD 1080P 60" Plasma today.

  • @XmegaPresident plasma is crap OLED

  • you can se the tubes

  • Nice color, Zenith's usually have good color.

  • Any idea how much this set cost new? Although portable, I'll bet it is heavy! My dad bought his first portable color TV in 1972. It was a SONY Trinitron. This might sound weird, but I love the Soft amber glow and the warmth from the tubes of these old sets. I even love the electronic odor that waftes up through the vents. I remember hearing a high pitch oscillation sound from these sets when I was young. I don't hear that sound from TVs any more, probably due to hearing loss.

  • awesome tv

  • Nice vacuum tube set! I would love to find a nice old color portable like that.

  • That's a lot like the Chromacolor II 13" portable in that it uses the full console chassis/power transformer. Really good picture!

  • haha, 6:25 "zenith right there"! nice set! my 1966 zenith single tube portable record player using the point to point chassis unlike my 1966 voice of music record player which uses a printed circuit board tube chassis.
