well their ya go...didnt check yer fencing? electricity solves most if not all problems solved many problems i had with goats getting out etc i swear by leccy fencing try it mate
ouch, I feel sorry for you! A dog got mine last year. This year I've buried fence around the perimeter of the coop & run. Also, use J-clips (sometimes called cage-clips) or wire pieces to connect the edge of the buried fence to the edge of the standing fence so critters can't push under it. Also consider reinforcing fencing along the gate (where an end of fencing is connected to the pole); the dog ripped my fence away from the pole to get to my chickens. Good luck!
I see you have a lot of sheet metal lying around. You can dig that into the ground along the bottom of the fence. That'll also prevent the fox from digging his way through ;-)
Christian, can you not also go to your main mail delivery box? Not You tube inbox I mean. YT box has a habit of non delivery but I find mails at main box. I do remember warning you about this kind of stuff. I lost an old 2003 racer from my flock the other day loft flying a top notch bird & friend. A Northern Goshawk left me just his head. I'm not ashamed to shed a few tears. The heavier gauge chicken wire will keep him out. Place a snare in that hole though, he will use right away & hang
My chickens free range and l loose one now and then which I can accept, but I hate when something comes in and kills all of them. At least when hawks or eagles come a round they take one and leave.
Sorry for your loss and I know from experience how you feel. Here the problem has been Raccoon and Wiesel back when I had hens we didn't have a Fox problem but now we have a good size Fox population too. I'm getting birds again this summer, northern hemisphere, and my plans along with a sturdy coop and strong fencing is to install electric poultry netting around the perimeter. Unfortunately no system is fool proof. I still grin every-time I see raccoon road kill though.
@dalecalder2003 1/4 inch hardware cloth is fool proof. I have used it for many years. However my aviaries are small it is horrible expensive however one can move a smaller aviary & use it as a chicken tractor. I have weasel live under my lofts at times & foxes, coyotes sit & watch my birds until my dogs notice. It is accipiters, Goshawk especially when I go to exercise or toss cause my losses & I have breeders worth $1500. Tossdart
Sorry so much for your loss, that really sucks! Sounds like some of these folks posting here have some great ideas that should help out though. hope you find one that keeps those bloody foxes out!!!
I realize this sounds gross, but...pissing around the enclosure may work to deter foxes and other predators. Most animals find the smell of human urine extremely offensive. Add more urine after each rain.
i know the feeling last year my sisters dog got into my pen and killed 30 of my chickens hopefuly youll get your fience fixed good enough so them foxes wont be a bother to you
Ruddy foxes! I'm really sorry for your loss. I put steel roofing two feet in the ground & two feet above to keep anything digging in. We don't have foxes but Opossums, coyotes & occasional raccoons or skunks.
One fox doesn't take that many chickens. This late in the season it would be a mother hunting with it's almost adult litter. Chicken wire along the bottom 2 feet is needed. Either that or a dog inside the chicken coop at night. Foxes will return. They always return. Sorry about your flock.
We had an 'possum living comfortably within our coop. sharing food an water and leaving us 1 or 2 eggs per day. He didn't kill any chickens but was more like a room-mate. I found him after two-three days curled up in one of the nest boxes. Great way for him to spend the winter.
Suggestion: run some chicken wire next to your fence on the outside (the ones w/smaller holes)but first dig down about a foot like a trench and place about a foot of the wire bent "L" shaped toward u, then cover it over w/dirt you took out for the trench..this will prevent the fox from digging under the fence as its nails will scrape on wire and it cant dig under..also good to keep rabbits out of a garden.
I don't know if you have a pet dog, but I've heard of you walk your dog around the perimeter of your property (or at least around the chicken run) every day; that the scent of your dog deters the foxes from coming in. So sorry about your chickens - horrible thing to happen.
I had that problem too! A fox killed 15 chicken in one day and 30 on the next! She broke up a wooden door to get them, and she kept coming back to kill more over and over again. I changed the coop, i mooved my chicken to other places but she would do everything to kill them. After 100 birds killed, I bought an electric fence! Never underestimate a fox, believe me! Good luck
hi christian, have you ever thought of a kero fridge. i was bought up in deepwater n,s w. cold country.we had 32 volt power. no lights except tilly kero lamps, copper for boiling water, wood fires ,2mile of boggy road that we could not use if wet, me and my 2 sisters and our father lived this way for many years ,mum passed away when i was 10 years old. and i will be 50 this halloween, good life i would do it all over again too given the chance, warmest regards sharyn
Just a thought, not sure if it is useful or not, but could you at least deter the fox with a solar powered electric wire at a couple of different heights? I know dogs go at everything first with their noses, maybe foxes do too?? Just a suggestion, appologies if it isn't a very bright one............I am sorry about your loss.
@beadella1958 Della!!! I said "Delia" by mistake on the vid, it was ur e-mail that was deleted. sorry bout that, thanks for commenting so i could get ur details! Christian
Yeah, It's happened to me as well. For sure, mend the fence and keep an eye out, the fox will be back. No need to kill it really but vigilance and a solid fence should do. Here we also have to worry about weasels so that means very small mesh fencing at least a foot down underground in case they try to dig through.
cunning fox. . beautiful smart creatures, but when it takes away your food/pets its time for the fox to go. . trap or kill. . . What about getting a dog to keep the pests away?

Or easier.... feed them at the same place for a week or two..and after a few days hide and wait for it with a gun

You never thought about putting a snare..??? Works for me

You could always just shut the chickens in the coop at night if the fox get under the fence.
