Great performance. I'm also glad to hear him saying part of the lyrics. It has been so long since I watched "Round Midnight" and heard he spoke. Music comes out from his soul. Who are other players?
thanks for the info 'theSaxland' ! It's always good to know on what instruments beautiful music is made... Not a Selmer saxophone for a change...up until 1961 at least and not in this clip...
Dexter Gordon played Conn 30M & 10M with a Hollywood Dukoff until 1961 when his horn was stolen in Paris. After this he played resonated Selmers with a Super ToneMaster Otto Link
delivered with the dry dapper voice of a british news broadcaster... "and now... what's new? ......" hang on to your hats folks it's dex comin' at ya. great post... great tune... one of the greatest tenormen of all time.
Was this cat koooool or what. What you're not seeing is his cool entry into the club at the actual beginning of this video. He strolls up the walkway out of the shadows, tall, wearing a double breasted trenchcoat and fashionable hat, cigarette in tow, mingles acknowledging the crowd whilst removing his coat and hat. You could cut the crowds anticipation with a knife. Classic stuff from a very dapperly dressed Dexter! Thank goodness someone had the foresight to record this near 5 decades ago!
Great Dexter ! It's very interesting to compare this session with the one (What's new) recorded live in Paradiso (Amsterdam). A very nice theme, listen to the chords.
Dexter Gordon was and IS the definition of cool.
