Ray Wilson was given an impossible job, following the likes of Collins and Gabriel---kind of like Dan Devine following Lombardi at Green Bay and Parseghian at Notre Dame, for those into American football----and he went through an extensive auditioning process overseen by Rutherford and Banks. Personally, I thought that the one album they did with him was excellent---and it's apparent that the audience at this show liked him. Plus the album Calling all Stations was quite popular in Europe.
I think Ray is a superb singer, but I just think this song doesn't suit him. He has a thick, heavy voice, loike gabriel had, and this song was more suited to someone with a lighter, more darting voice like Phil. Ray does a terrific job on the Gabriel stuff but actually sounds best sinigng the Calling all Stations stuff. Its a bit like how in Marillion Hogarth just cannot do justice to the Fish tracks but sounds great with his own stuff.
During this tour..waaayyy too many Phil songs and one or two of them were bound to fail miserably like this one. Ray is excellent but on this one, he sucks.
Please stay on pitch! Ray sings so badly out of tune way too often. And the drumming is as boring as dry toast with no emotion. Listening to this is painful compared to past Genesis glory. Helps me see why TB and MR pulled the plug on this lineup.
It is particularly rare to find the kind of funkiness and groove in progressive rock that Phil is famous for. Also, his on stage energy vocally and presence-wise are tough to follow. Ray's own songs and the Calling All Stations songs are a great repetoire that make me think of the Tresspass era to an extent. The Genesis songs from Phil's time are just not going to feel the same with Ray. The new band appeals to a subset of Genesis fans, and some new fans as well.
The thing is that Phil Collins is a extraordinary singer with a very own touch and sound. Ray Wilson is not a bad singer, but he was definitly the wrong one to sing Phil Collins' songs! And he is not the only one, listen to other singers who tried to cover a song which Phil Collins sang, it always sounds worse (except Mariah Carrey with "Against all odds" maybe..)
"Home by the sea" is a very good example for typical Collins vocals and technique...
Sorry, but this version stinks to high heaven. It's sad that Genesis transformed from being a really great prog/pop band to nothing more than a tribute band with a bad singer. Vocals are terrible, and there's no enthusiasm or emotion, which is what this song requires. Was real glad Phil was back singing in 07.
Tribute band? At least they were still doing new material w/ Ray and were still a real band. Some may argue that they were no longer really Genesis (which I happen to think is bullshit), but either way, they were STILL a fuckin REAL BAND! Now, they are a tribute/ oldies act, which Phil has turned them into. I think Phil is one of the world's best drummers, but, otherwise, he is utterly useless, especially where Genesis is concerned.
Best version is on The Way We Walk The Longs- though the live one in Wembley has a better guitar solo @ the end- the former is better all-round the drums are excellent in that one!
As for this, well i think they should have dropped this, Mama, Throwing It All Away, all PC songs really, and replaced them with The Cage, Sqounk, Closing section of Musical Box and Afterglow.
Rays voice suits more Gabriel or early PC songs- not later, he cant bring them to their full potential for me.
Didn't think it was worth doing this song on this tour, when they could have done In The Cage or something like that. But in the context of a full show it was enjoyable. Saw a show on the 2007 tour and was more bored by that version - I think the song is sounding a bit dated these days.

Could any of you be able to sing this better? On a stage full of people and the guys who wrote the song behind you? I thought not.

Certainly NOT good at all. Very amateur sounding. Not a good song for Ray, but then again, I don't care for him on any of the pre-CAS material.

Couldn't agree more.
This is the closest we'll get to if Peter ever sang the later Genesis tunes.......but who would want to hear that?
