Eh, my favorite is Spirit of Radio, a lot of that is because I love the lyrics, but this is definitely up there alongside Mission, Spirit of Radio, and others. I loved the HYF Album a whole lot. You nailed the cover by the way, just tossing my 2 cents in.
Nice playing. "Time Stand Still" is probably my favorite Rush track as well. Perfect song. Thanks for all of your videos. I have picked up a few things I might otherwise have missed in playing them.
Sorry I was thinking of Distant Early Warning. I still have my Grace Under Pressure concert shirt... it's very frail I wore it so much when I was a kid.
Great cover, Troy. I didn't like this one too much until just recently, when I had a reason to understand the meaning. Now I love this one, but I still hate the video.
Ive always wondered how to play that fill at 2:43 thanx every performance I 've seen before always cut to the drum fill at the same point and not the bass
This is actually one of my favorite Rush songs. Hold Your Fire is def. my favorite album for two reasons: it's the first Rush album I bought, and it's a more personal/intimate album compared to many of their others. Mission is perhaps my all-time favorite song.
If I were forced to choose a favorite song this would probably be it, though I'm fond of Mission (as you are) as well. I had been a big fan of theirs for 8 or 9 years already when this album came out. Album-wise I like Permanent Waves and Power Windows among others.
Thanks. This is probably my favorite song by RUSH. This was my first take of which I thought were going to be many. That's why I just played through the opening note clunker. When I made it through that riff you mentioned I was pretty sure I wouldn't be able to improve on it, so I went with this take. It is a great riff and really tough to play. Thanks again.
No. I looked seriously into getting a Wal back in '91. Went to the Bass Centre in Los Angeles, CA and played one - didn't think it was worth $3,000. We were on a trip to California at the time.
@Jalreal It's actually one of my favorite Rush songs. I think it's mostly cause It wasn't what I was used to hearing from them. I have to agree with TJH3113--I don't care much for Tom Sawyer either.
great job! i just saw them in houston,tx- they were perfect as always. they are the best. how does geddy play and sing at the same time with all those difficult riffs. they played this song and it's one of the best- continue playing. love to watch
@TOPmusicman8 Thanks. I often wonder the same thing myself. I heard they're playing this song on the current tour. Maybe to tie in with the whole "time" thing?
Tims stands still as I'm watching your video. Outstanding cover once again. I wondered what happened at the beginning of the track. It's not like you to make an error :)
Your run at 2:44 brought a huge smile on my face. I love it.
@constantine2112 Thanks Constantine. This was a first take, practice run so I wasn't that concerned with the error - it actually took the pressure off having made one so early in the song and I assumed I'd be doing it again. When I played it back to check the levels and all, I knew I would have a hard time doing it better so I was willing to live with the opening note clunker. That run you mentioned is a killer.
@monkeymagnumpi Thanks. Don't sell yourself short, there are no easy RUSH bass lines. The most important thing is that we're playing them the best we can.

Yes, Geddy's bass lines are the best.

so you've got a fender jazz bass, a MM bass, and a Rickenbacker..... will we see a wal bass in the future?

No. I looked seriously into getting a Wal back in '91. Went to the Bass Centre in Los Angeles, CA and played one - didn't think it was worth $3,000. We were on a trip to California at the time.

Did Geddy record this song with a MM?? It sounds so at home with the song. Or is this just a personal choice??
marshman500 1 year ago
@marshman500
No, he used a Wal bass. This sounds closer to a Wal than the other two so that's exactly why I used it.
TJH3113 1 year ago
It's odd to see this at the top of anyone's favorite Rush song list...
A lot of people aren't a big fan of this album in general, and more so this particular song, from my experience anyway.
Cool though, since Tom Sawyer is kinda getting old.. :P
