This is fascinating - one can already hear the penetrating metallic power and slower vibrato of a dramatic soprano that shows up in her early Brunhildes. I love her intent focus as well. Anyone who thinks this is "white sound" should remember, this is early 1950's studio recording equipment (not even omnidirection mic's) and her voice probably sounded 5 times larger and more colorful in the actual room.
she was only 19 here that's when she made her debut at the vienna state opera in this role 1959 one year later she was senta at bayreuth pretty remarkable for a 20 year old.she made her stage debut at 16 as rosina .
@ploplisphilin :) maybe you should record your own singing and post here, let us know how should we sing Queen of the night without white sound? Come on, be open to art and do not use art a tool put people down, i like latte but some others like english breakfast....
what makes a Wagnerian is that the voice can sustain the 'weight' of the line. It has not as much to do with size of voice as with weight. This aria explains why her voice fell apart singing 'heavier' roles.
I prefer her much more in this repertoir. The Wagner roles made her voice whiter and with more wobble. Her Salome also found here in Barcelona is quite wobbly. However she is always a great presence, and a huge, charismatic actress !
that was her first performance ever in aix la provence as a teenage queen of night - going sharp and shrill here and there but all the notes there - this is amazing! well she started out as a coloratura and went on to do Salome - and, mind you, Elektra, Brünnhilde, Isolde...
There is a clip of her in performance doing it with orchestra and it is fabulous. it was here isn youTube but it is gone. I wish they would bring it back.
that's what you call effortless...:D

@Brunnhilde66 I'm sure you've heard better queens. Were they also 19 years old? And did they grow up to be wagnerian sopranos?

Terrific vocalism, but she seems to be thinking about something else. Not much fire in the interpretation.

I agree. Has perhaps to do with the fact she was not even 20 years old at the time?

her voice is weak and small

Beautiful voice! Not so much tremolo as most sopranos, which I really appreciate.

She is very good here and her Hojotoho from Osaka 1967 are stunning. There are not many singers you can find that sung both in public...
