The Bible attests that baptism is the way a person becomes part of the body of Christ, the Church. At the end of his speech in Pentecost, Peter told his hearers what they had to do to be saved: "Repent and be baptised EVERYONE of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(Acts 2:38) . Not that Peter said EVERYONE, not just adults.
In Catholic belief, the Latin term " ex opere operato" which literally means from the work performed, expresses the essentially objective mode of operation by which GRACE is imparted in the 7 SACRAMENTS , by God's Spirit ( of which Baptism is first ) and its independence of the subjective attitude of the minister and recipient. Thus, even babies can be baptized even if they are too young to understand. The GRACE comes through the will of the Holy Spirit in the sacrament.
I agree. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that a baby must be baptized. Baptism is only for those who profess faith in Jesus Christ as their only savior. A baby cannot understand the meaning of baptism. The baby can be taught the Word of Jehovah by his parents but he had to make the truth his own before getting baptized. This is a serious undertaking of one's lifelong dedication to God and His son Jesus.
