I've heard about this, when meteors come down they get superheated by the friction of travelling through the atmosphere at between 10 and 60 km/s. They scorch the earth below and if huge can burn holes in the atmosphere. However apophis isn't comparable to the Chicxulub or even one from up here in Canada, that formed the Manicouagan river and island. Anyone underneath Apophis when it broke through the atmosphere would be toast though.
