Wtf, I don't get that argument of being a cult favourite and being liked for that. The Sega CD was not meant to be a cult anything, it was for mainstream audiences and bombed because of crap games and horrible management on Sega's part.
If people like the damn thing, someone stole mine years ago, and I've never missed it.
The Sega CD is a niche/cult favorite, that in itself is the appeal. It's not a mainstream system, and that's the point. It's an obscure system with some exclusives on it that are good, and some are great. But obviously if it had the mainstream appeal that the PS1 did with TONS of games on it, then it wouldn't be a cult favorite would it?
@EnigmaHood Ah yes. The hipster argument for liking something because it's not mainstream. Fine if you like it for that, but that's not me. I'd rather have something I can enjoy thoroughly.
@phreakindee Lol yeah, that's why you bought it and the 3DO right? I'm explaining why people like the Sega CD. Even I never bought the Sega CD, I just like the games on it and I play them with emulator. Loved Snatcher, and like you mentioned in your annotations, it's the only English version available. Not sure why you didn't realize that in the first place.
The sega cd and its ... i dunno sister? 32x were released around when sega first started to lose the plot. Both of them sucked back then and they suck now. It seems the only people who liked them turned up here to troll. Because I remember back then, they weren't considered very good, they had a small hand full of games, this is coming from someone who grew up on mega drive, and master system and has owned all of segas consoles. Mega drive was a fantastic game system, with 2 smudges on its name
@mrbigbadonion Way to be a dick. That aside, you're correct in that the 32x wasn't good because it just had next to no games on it. It was released by Sega as a way to surpass the SNES in the color department. The SNES could render more colors than the Genesis, and Sega didn't like that, so Sega of America had the idea to release this as an inexpensive add on to the Genesis. Sadly they didn't know that Sega of Japan was already working on the Saturn and prepared to release it...
shortly after the planned 32x release. Also sadly, the 32x wasn't inexpensive, it was $150 US on launch, and could only cater to a smaller demographic of gamers who owned both the Genesis and the 32x. Well the 32x did achieve its goal of surpassing the SNES in the colors department, most of the games on the 32x were very colorful. But no one bought the system, and the Saturn was shortly after so the 32x died quickly with very few games released, and even fewer good games..
The only games worth mentioning are Kolibri, Tempo, and Knuckles Chaotix. Tempo is kind of an average platformer, but I like it. Kolibri is like Ecco the Dolphin, and Knux Chaotix is dissed by many Sonic fans, but I enjoyed it a lot. Had some novel ideas, and tried to do some different things, but the level design suffered as a result.
@EnigmaHood I wasn't really being a dick. I was more responding to the fanboys being dicks about lgr's opinon of the sega CD, It simply wasn't very good. Aside from sonic CD there it had little else to offer, and 32x was just... well i think the less said about that one the better. Don't get me wrong, I loved sega back in the 90s I just think both add ons ruined segas reputation with a lot of gamers, esp the 32x for reasons you just said and sega never really seemed to recover properly.
@mrbigbadonion See my latest response. The Sega CD has cult appeal, which (ironically) makes things valuable. Sonic CD is not the only game that is awesome on the system, but the point is that something that is rare, and obscure combined with good quality, improves the value of something. That's what cult/underground appeal is all about.
@EnigmaHood I'd hardly call either add ons all that rare or valuable, just look for it on Ebay. perhaps the first sega cd model but the second one certainly isn't. Rare would be more along the lines of Amstrad gx4000 or apple pippin, Ok so maybe it does have a bit of a cult following, even though it was also fairly mainstream. But either way I'm still entitled to voice my opinion, Personally I rate a game system on its games, because that's the whole point isn't it? and both lacked just that.
@mrbigbadonion I didn't say it was rare, I said something rarity increases the value of something. And yes, a Sega CD or CDX that is new and in mint condition is rare, so that would sell for quite a bit more than one that is scratched up with used chewing gum on it. But the cult appeal is mostly based on the obscurity of it and the good games it had which were also obscure. I honestly think it's stupid to rate a system like this, you can play any of these games on emulator..(cont)
so who cares about the system? You buy the system because it appeals to you. Watch this guy's review of the 3DO, specifically the last thing he says. Even he admits that appeal is all there is to these things.
@EnigmaHood I wouldn't really put this in to the same category as the 3DO, that's a very different kettle of fish to the Sega CD, it ticks a lot more of the boxes, such as being much harder to get hold of, had some obscure and great games, that is a genuinly cult game system.. Frankly I dont agree that the sega cd is, it just isn't obscure in any way, it sold quite well for a time. Quite obviously a new sega CD is rare, just like a new Sega Genesis is rare, we're not calling the genesis......
@EnigmaHood A cult system are we? I dunno. Perhaps we'll just have to agree to disagree on this. As for emulators, Most consoles, have an emulator. But you still have to take the games in to account on how good it was, or is. I Think we've gotten way off my original point now. All I was trying to say is the sega cd just wasn't very good, and didn't live up to what it was meant to be. Perhaps I was a little harsh, but i still stand by the original point.
@mrbigbadonion Lol no, the 3DO had no good games that couldn't be found on another console. The Sega CD is relatively obscure, if you deny that then I think you're arguing for the sake of arguing. In fact I think your entire argument is just that since you're basically contradicting all of your points now that you are backing the 3DO. You can get any system for cheap as long as it's banged up enough, new is what matters to any collector. Yes most consoles have an emulator SO WHAT?
Yes the games are what matters, which is what I've been trying to tell you. The only reason to get the system is APPEAL. You don't need to buy the system to play the games, duh. The Sega CD is very good, no it didn't live up to what it was meant to be, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT WASN'T GOOD. You don't really have much of an argument here.
@EnigmaHood Anyway, like i said lets just agree to disagree, and move on. Telling me "you don;'t really have an argument here" doesn't make yours look any more valid either, nor does it make you look any smarter, which is what you have been trying to do this whole time. As I said everyone is entitled to an opinon, I have mine, you have yours. You like Sega CD that's good for you, I dont, thats... bad for me? I don't really see what difference it makes.
@mrbigbadonion No actually I wasn't. I was trying to tell you why people like the Sega CD, and you kept arguing. The emulation point was to get you off of the "rate the system" nonsense. You can download any emulator and play any classic game you want, you don't actually need the system, so rating it is dumb. I told you, you didn't have an argument because you were saying that it didn't live up to what it was meant to be, but that's not an argument for why someone should like or
dislike a console. It doesn't have to "live up to what it was meant to be", ironically if it did, then it would lose its cult appeal, which was what I was trying to get you to understand, but you didn't.
@EnigmaHood You was arguing for the sake of arguing a long time ago, and most of your points are totally invalid, you brought the emulation crap up, not me, I dont see what emulators have to do with this at all. I was actually trying bring this to an end. You're right a lot of 3DOs games you could get on any other system by the time the ps1, saturn etc had been out a little while, but it had a lot of them first. When the 3DO was first released, it was fairly impressive. If a little over priced
@mrbigbadonion Naa, you are arguing for argument sake, and I already told you why emulation refutes your ridiculous point. Not my fault you don't understand. Yes I am right, the 3DO has no exclusive games worth caring about. Whether it had them first isn't really important now, its value is only cult value, which seems to be over your head. And no, it was a LOT over priced.
@EnigmaHood LOL!!! Does it really mean that much to you?. If it's really that important to you, I'l allow you to have this argument, you win, you're right, I'm wrong I bow down to your superior intellect sir, thank you for educating me in the way of "cult value" and putting me straight in my delusions, that enjoying a game system, and its games is irrelevant to anything, its all about not being mainstream, I'l take this knowledge and lead a more worthwhile life thankyou :)
@mrbigbadonion Look who's talking, you could have just dropped it and left. In fact the first reply I made to you should have been enough for you. There was no argument, I was trying to educate you. Quite obviously you have issue with "winning" an internet argument. That's why you kept arguing for argument's sake. But now you're trying the whole "I'll be facetious, and condescending" thing. *pats your head* Nice try. :)
Love soul star I find that game much much more enjoyable than star fox. The 2d sprites and the coloring pull you into the game more than star fox's blocky ugly looking polygons.
Sega made some of the best badass games that are still in play till this day. They didnt make it to fighting ways with ps3, x box, or nintendo. But even better there just making good old fashion arcade games on those systems and hence i think they still win in there own way. Plus who else to make arcade old style games then SEGA the king system of arcade style gaming?!
Nothing to do with the Sega CD, Phreakindee, more about the whole Japanese RPG thing. Despite liking the classic Final Fantasies, I like Western RPGs more, they allow some freedoms that JRPGs won't allow. That said, though, the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, mostly the main series, might be up your alley. They are old-school dungeon crawlers like Might and Magic but with a mish-mash of religions and folklore and it kinda serves as the origin of the poke'mon game mechanics, but for adults.
I'm sorry but sega has and never will be in "hades" maybe for household consoles but they still make plenty of games and game boards for arcades and such. I don't mean to sound like a d bag i'm just pointing it out.
@sybnios Sorry "dude", but only an ignorant douche goes around making crappy catch-all assessments :)
I stated my reasons for not recommending the Sega CD & it has to do with it not justifying its cost to me, personally. I still own one though, because I DO like the system! I just can't bring myself to say that I would recommend buying one to everyone, because I can't bring myself to say it was 100% worth it myself. It mostly sits there gathering dust. I enjoy it & play it, but rarely.
Gamefaqs Top 10 Sega CD Games 01 NFL Trivia Challenge (Whaaa? Why is this number 1? It's a sports trivia game!) 02 Snatcher 03 Shining Force CD 04 Sonic CD 05 Dark Wizard 06 Lunar: The Silver Star 07 Lunar: Eternal Blue 08 Vay 09 Flashback: The Quest for Identity 10 Popful Mail By the way, there's also ports of "Earthworm Jim" and "Mickey Mania" that have better animations and an extra level which make them worth getting.
Sega died because of poor marketing and Playstation getting into the mix, setting the forefront for 3D games while Sega's 2D arcade games were becoming dated. Nintendo still had Miyamoto as always to carry their console and make a handful of great games for their system. I hate how people say Nintendo beat Sega in the console wars. It was really Playstation that crushed Sega. If not for Sony, I think Sega would've survived since they were much more appealing to 3rd party developers.
I haven't watched a lot of your reviews and I won't criticize you too much but if you hate the Sega CD that much why make a Top 5 list or any list if these are games aren't of any importance to you?
@diablo313 This was an early attempt of mine to appease the fans and critics constantly emailing me about games I left out of my Sega CD review. It didn't work. I'll likely never do it again :)
@phreakindee i think youve missed...every good game. you should try sol feace/cobra command(plane shooter games), road avenger(interactive movie style driving game...HARD) and sewer shark(hard but fun shooter)
also you shouldnt call this top 5, if your whinging on about them that much.
@kawrght This isn't my list, so I agree. My own favorites are entirely different, these are only the ones recommended to me that weren't in my previous review.
@phreakindee what are your pesonal favs? htough i kinda think someone was messing with you as these games are some of the worst the console had to offer.
@Blitzwing989 Considering this isn't MY list of best games, but a list made by the demands on countless people emailing me, then it seems everyone else is crazy.
The problem with the Sega CD is that Sega senior executives interfered with the engineers. Originally, it was just supposed to improve the color pallet, increase the system memory and allow the Genesis to use CD's as a medium. The CEOs got involved and added a redundant 16-bit processor and an expensive chip for full motion video. This doubled the price of the system and made it a useless piece of junk.
wolfchild?Earthworm Jim Special Edition?Sol Feace?Robo Aleste?Slipheed?Sonic CD?StarWars Rebel Assault? are good games & my favourites,as your a confessed "Sega Fanboy" sure dont follow blindly but try to concentrate on the positives, remember Sega was pushing the boundaries, part of there downfall IMO doing too much too soon & at once.CD especially FMV was in its infancy.& the system didnt last long & Sega pissing off some developers it had a small library like any short lived platform would have
"just a few games outweighing all the horrible games"
See, the horrible games were somehow mostly of USian origin, while the great games are Japanese, with a good portion still untranslated. USians never really made good video games until just a few years ago. Japanese never made any of those FMV crap. Like, in this video 4 out of 5 games are Japanese, and what is that Soulstar crap i never even heard of ? SCD has quite a few more gems, provided you know moonspeak.
I agree that the Sega CD didn't live up to it's potential, I and also didn't care for most of the games in this video either. But I did love the driving portion of Batman Returns. But here are the CD games I did enjoy on it: Road Avenger, AH-3 Thunderstrike, Final Fight CD, Afterburner III, Jaguar XJ220, Prince of Persia, Sonic CD and maybe one or two others I'm forgetting. But yeah, for the most part, the system was a disappointment. But there's still some fun to be had with it.
How did I not see this video in your back catalog!?
I must say that I am with you 100% on the Sega-CD (& 32X to a lesser extent); They are interesting oddities that I want to have back in my collection at some point, but the games for the systems are too hard to come by to be worth the amount of effort you have to go to to actually enjoy them.
I too would prefer to delete these from history in exchange for a Dreamcast 2. (As long as they make the Shenmue trilogy for it :D)
Hmm... interesting top 5. Though personally I would add Third World War, Rise of the Dragon and Night Trap (c'mon, game was cheesy funny) to the list along side Snatcher and Lunar.
In regards to Snatcher, the Sega CD version is the only version that was actually released in the west. All the other console ports may be better, but good luck finding them. Not that I can promise they are even in english.
The Mega CD version IS the best version. For one thing, its the only one in English. Kind of a big deal. And although they were technically superior machines, the PSX and Saturn versions were censored to shit and had awful, awful music. And again- they were in Japanese only.
@stigfan35 Oh Terminator OWNED. So damned good. One of the few games where the music really does make the game. Also good was Jurassic Park (much better adventure game than Snatcher. But I loathe visual novels.), Silpheed, Time Gal (only fun FMV game), Dark Wizard, Final Fight (best version of it till modern emulation times), Third World War, Thunderstrike, Lunar, and Vay. They even had Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master 2 on it. (Need Shining Force & Popful Mail. BADLY.)
you made the best point ever for the ps1 in that even the least memorable games were new and fresh versus the same old junk from the other systems, and what made it so great was on top of that it had some really killer apps.
@TheNeoHack Considering this isn't MY list of best games, but a list made by the demands on countless people emailing me, then it seems everyone else is crazy.
it's an honest, realistic review.Anybody who knocks you for that, is a dick.Though, I must admit, with the exception of Tomb Raider, yes, just those games alone would have probably made a PS1 worth the money.I mean, yeah.
well the sega CD had the best version of terminator.
play that and tell me it's not good.
I will have to say that it won't make you buy the system but if you have 1 you must (should) always mention it just because it's the best game on the sega CD.
I got a sega cd for 5 bucks, and I paid a total of 90 bucks for all the best games (except for snatcher) and I love it!!! Just sayin', I totally get your review. But seriously, 180 dollars for Snatcher?!?! jeezuss...
main reason why so many gravitate towards the Sega CD version of Snatcher is that it's the ONLY platform that the English language version of Snatcher was released on.
I totally agree with you on the jrpg stuff. I just never really liked the final fantasy series. They are just... too slow for my taste. I like the western RPG's like Fallout and Morrowind.
Haha, aside from Metal Gear, I don't like any of those Playstation games. Playstation had so much Crap that was popular. Batman was only Cool because of the Bosses, SEGA fans were looking for fast Arcade action and intense Boss Battles, but it was too Hard, The Scaling Could have been Programmed on SEGA Genesis. The Platforming part in Batman? I thought everyone knew that was just thrown in and is Crap Designed Crap Programmed. Robo Aleste was good, I like Time Gal and Revenge of the Ninja.
@stringanime Ok oook time out a litle bit you ogre of stupidity, what exactly do you mean that playstation was full of crap? Is this because playstation was have greater sucsess than even sega saturn?? Do you mean that symphony of the night wasn't a great game?? Sega cd system was a total failure because of the small amound of titles that have released, and the most of them suck end of story!
@youtoubakias I owned Symphony of the Night for Both Saturn and Playstation.
I didn't like either, however I did like how you can choose 1 of 3 characters right out of the gate, in the Saturn Version. But that doesn't change my opinion, that the Best Castlevania ever to date, is SNES Castlevania 4. Sorry if my opinion is lesser than yours, Mr I-like-Mainstream-video-games-smarty-pants. It looked good, but I would have preferred a better game.
Besides Sonic CD and Snatcher I have no real interest in this system, but my god Sonic CD really is quite awesome and, most notably, i am one of the 'OMG U HATE SNATCHER DIE!' people. Heck, I even got blocked by a guy for putting such a comment! Even though it was in a rather joke-y manner and he still blocked me like a miserable little bitch but whatever. Ive never played an actual Sega CD and have no intention on doing so. Snatcher works perfectly suffice on an emulator.
i have the Mega CD too, bought it for some 5 bucks in a pawn shop in the late 90's, and got a load of games with it, but the only ones i could play was Eye of the Beholder, Lunar Silver Star, Might and Magic III and Road Avenger.
See, I can respect a video like this. Someone who has actually tried something and didn't care for it. Then you have a right to say it sucks, or it's not for you. :)
Sega Cd was cool back in the day, because it was new. Games on this shiny disc, that although being around since 84, were also new to a lot of people. plus, as an 11 year old when this came out, I didn't care if it sucked, it came from Sega and must have something good about it.
I was very confused by this video. I thought that top 5 videos are suppose to talk about your favorite games for the system, but you seemed to hate every game on your list. The best complement you could give was that some of the games were okay. I dont mind that you hate the Sega CD but you should call your video something different than the TOP 5 Sega CD Games.
I am aware of this, and stated such in the description of the video in the video itself. Perhaps it should be something along the lines of "Top 5 Most Talked-About Sega CD Games" or something, but then that's too long for me.
I don't hate the Sega CD, this video was to reiterate just that. I like it. I just don't like most of the games and am not a huge fan of any of these "popular" titles.
There's a demo of Super Android from Epic Pinball playing on your computer! I just noticed that when I only started watching this vid. Sorry, but I couldn't help myself.
I do think the SegaCD isn't that great, I would just like to note the reason people make a big deal about the SegaCD version of Snatcher opposed to say the PSX version or Saturn version is that the PSX and Saturn have this horrible CG stuff, scenes ommited and the music isn't so good. Not to mention a lot more censorship.
You really should try eternal champions (If you like fighting games, then I don't see why you wouldn't like it), supreme warrior (you might disagree with me on supreme warrior but I like it), and Mega Race (its better on PC or 3DO but its not too bad on sega cd)
I had Eternal Champions mentioned to me a few times, it's a decent fighter but I thought it could have been done just a well as the Genesis. I thought Supreme Warrior was a bit campy and felt like a fighting version of Slam City. And Mega Race was indeed better on PC and such, but not by much. It is an enjoyable game, if nothing else but for its quirky humor.
My personal top 5 would probably be Robo Aleste, Sonic CD, Silpheed, Panic! and Heart of the Alien. The top 5 in the video are only those that people seem to suggest are the best, which, hey, is fine.
The best games I like on the Sega CD are Sonic CD, Silpheed, Android Assault, Lords of Thunder, Lunar Eternal Blue, Lunar The Silver Star, Robo Aleste, Snatcher and Final Fight CD.
At the end of the vid I saw that you screen was showing Epic Pinball. Such a great game back in the day and it still is.
I'll say it:the Sega CD is a piece of junk- It uses the the same 68000 chip and because of that, most of the games looked awful. Sometimes even worse than the Genesis. But it was cool , and the first CD system. Plus sega made up for it with the Dreamcast.
if Castlevania SOTN was the only game ever made for the PS1, I wouldn't care since I feel that game is the definition of perfection. I feel the same way about Sonic CD therefor I feel my purchase was more than justified.
I know there are those like that, which is why I included that list... for me though, I just wanted the system bad enough it didn't matter.
Still, if it were a new system though, 1 or even 5 games isn't enough for me usually. It's why I haven't yet bought a PS3, but will be come Christmas this year. God of War, Katamari, Uncharteds, GT5, Heavy Rain and so many other awesome games coming out I now have my reason.
I hear you there, right now I'm waiting on Perfect Dark HD for the 360. I really hate how Microsoft does points instead of money like steam does; added to the fact I'm a Canadian that moved to the US so I had to make a new account so I could even GIVE Microsoft my money left a very displeasing taste in my mouth. Those games you mentioned kind of make the other pasture look a lot greener too...
The new Perfect Dark and Serious Sam and Painkiller games for XBLA look great! A good alternative to using their points system is to just buy online, through either eBay or Amazon or gamepointsnow . com
I have used all 3 and each have their advantages, but at least you don't have to go through Microsoft and end up with extra points leftover when you're through!
I had wondered that myself as I've read some good things about, but all anyone has ever emailed me about is Silver Star, or vaguely referring to "Lunar" in general...
I was also surprised people didn't bug you about Shining Star Sega CD version or Vay either. If you watch the cut scenes for Lunar Eternal Blue, you will get a gist of how good the storyline is. In fact, I think it had one of the longest FMV cut scenes at the time.
Oh I was bugged about those but just not nearly as much as Lunar, PFM and Snatcher, and they were actually the two others I wanted to include but got tired of making the video and really my arguments against them are pretty much the same. Awesome games, not for me, hard to come by. I'll have to check out Lunar Blue though, I'll admit I haven't tried it.
Also mentioned a lot: Spiderman/Kingpin, Eternal Champions, Monkey Island, Keio, Road Avenger, Rise of the Dragon, Sewer Shark...
Crappy console is just crappy.

But you still have to take the games in to account on how good it was, or is. I Think we've gotten way off my original point now. All I was trying to say is the sega cd just wasn't very good, and didn't live up to what it was meant to be. Perhaps I was a little harsh, but i still stand by the original point.
mrbigbadonion 1 week ago
@mrbigbadonion Lol no, the 3DO had no good games that couldn't be found on another console. The Sega CD is relatively obscure, if you deny that then I think you're arguing for the sake of arguing. In fact I think your entire argument is just that since you're basically contradicting all of your points now that you are backing the 3DO. You can get any system for cheap as long as it's banged up enough, new is what matters to any collector. Yes most consoles have an emulator SO WHAT?
EnigmaHood 1 week ago
Yes the games are what matters, which is what I've been trying to tell you. The only reason to get the system is APPEAL. You don't need to buy the system to play the games, duh. The Sega CD is very good, no it didn't live up to what it was meant to be, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT WASN'T GOOD. You don't really have much of an argument here.
EnigmaHood 1 week ago
@EnigmaHood Anyway, like i said lets just agree to disagree, and move on. Telling me "you don;'t really have an argument here" doesn't make yours look any more valid either, nor does it make you look any smarter, which is what you have been trying to do this whole time. As I said everyone is entitled to an opinon, I have mine, you have yours. You like Sega CD that's good for you, I dont, thats... bad for me? I don't really see what difference it makes.
mrbigbadonion 1 week ago

EnigmaHood 1 week ago
@EnigmaHood You was arguing for the sake of arguing a long time ago, and most of your points are totally invalid, you brought the emulation crap up, not me, I dont see what emulators have to do with this at all. I was actually trying bring this to an end. You're right a lot of 3DOs games you could get on any other system by the time the ps1, saturn etc had been out a little while, but it had a lot of them first. When the 3DO was first released, it was fairly impressive. If a little over priced
mrbigbadonion 1 week ago
@mrbigbadonion Naa, you are arguing for argument sake, and I already told you why emulation refutes your ridiculous point. Not my fault you don't understand. Yes I am right, the 3DO has no exclusive games worth caring about. Whether it had them first isn't really important now, its value is only cult value, which seems to be over your head. And no, it was a LOT over priced.
EnigmaHood 1 week ago
@EnigmaHood LOL!!! Does it really mean that much to you?. If it's really that important to you, I'l allow you to have this argument, you win, you're right, I'm wrong I bow down to your superior intellect sir, thank you for educating me in the way of "cult value" and putting me straight in my delusions, that enjoying a game system, and its games is irrelevant to anything, its all about not being mainstream, I'l take this knowledge and lead a more worthwhile life thankyou :)
mrbigbadonion 1 week ago
@mrbigbadonion Look who's talking, you could have just dropped it and left. In fact the first reply I made to you should have been enough for you. There was no argument, I was trying to educate you. Quite obviously you have issue with "winning" an internet argument. That's why you kept arguing for argument's sake. But now you're trying the whole "I'll be facetious, and condescending" thing. *pats your head* Nice try. :)

Oh, and the senior executives also nixed the chip that would have increased the color pallet to thousands of colors from 64 out of 512.
majesticlizard 6 months ago
The problem with the Sega CD is that Sega senior executives interfered with the engineers. Originally, it was just supposed to improve the color pallet, increase the system memory and allow the Genesis to use CD's as a medium. The CEOs got involved and added a redundant 16-bit processor and an expensive chip for full motion video. This doubled the price of the system and made it a useless piece of junk.
majesticlizard 6 months ago
wolfchild?Earthworm Jim Special Edition?Sol Feace?Robo Aleste?Slipheed?Sonic CD?StarWars Rebel Assault? are good games & my favourites,as your a confessed "Sega Fanboy" sure dont follow blindly but try to concentrate on the positives, remember Sega was pushing the boundaries, part of there downfall IMO doing too much too soon & at once.CD especially FMV was in its infancy.& the system didnt last long & Sega pissing off some developers it had a small library like any short lived platform would have
paulspydar 7 months ago

"just a few games outweighing all the horrible games"
See, the horrible games were somehow mostly of USian origin, while the great games are Japanese, with a good portion still untranslated. USians never really made good video games until just a few years ago. Japanese never made any of those FMV crap. Like, in this video 4 out of 5 games are Japanese, and what is that Soulstar crap i never even heard of ? SCD has quite a few more gems, provided you know moonspeak.
karry299 7 months ago in playlist Lazy Game Reviews - Official
I agree that the Sega CD didn't live up to it's potential, I and also didn't care for most of the games in this video either. But I did love the driving portion of Batman Returns. But here are the CD games I did enjoy on it: Road Avenger, AH-3 Thunderstrike, Final Fight CD, Afterburner III, Jaguar XJ220, Prince of Persia, Sonic CD and maybe one or two others I'm forgetting. But yeah, for the most part, the system was a disappointment. But there's still some fun to be had with it.

The Mega CD version IS the best version. For one thing, its the only one in English. Kind of a big deal. And although they were technically superior machines, the PSX and Saturn versions were censored to shit and had awful, awful music. And again- they were in Japanese only.

Eternal Champions was done on the Genesis actually....one of the few games I really liked on that system =)
sanitycollapse 2 years ago
I do think the SegaCD isn't that great, I would just like to note the reason people make a big deal about the SegaCD version of Snatcher opposed to say the PSX version or Saturn version is that the PSX and Saturn have this horrible CG stuff, scenes ommited and the music isn't so good. Not to mention a lot more censorship.
Jest 2 years ago
You really should try eternal champions (If you like fighting games, then I don't see why you wouldn't like it), supreme warrior (you might disagree with me on supreme warrior but I like it), and Mega Race (its better on PC or 3DO but its not too bad on sega cd)
sanjacraven36 2 years ago
I had Eternal Champions mentioned to me a few times, it's a decent fighter but I thought it could have been done just a well as the Genesis. I thought Supreme Warrior was a bit campy and felt like a fighting version of Slam City. And Mega Race was indeed better on PC and such, but not by much. It is an enjoyable game, if nothing else but for its quirky humor.

The best games I like on the Sega CD are Sonic CD, Silpheed, Android Assault, Lords of Thunder, Lunar Eternal Blue, Lunar The Silver Star, Robo Aleste, Snatcher and Final Fight CD.

I'll say it:the Sega CD is a piece of junk- It uses the the same 68000 chip and because of that, most of the games looked awful. Sometimes even worse than the Genesis. But it was cool , and the first CD system. Plus sega made up for it with the Dreamcast.
bean420man 2 years ago
if Castlevania SOTN was the only game ever made for the PS1, I wouldn't care since I feel that game is the definition of perfection. I feel the same way about Sonic CD therefor I feel my purchase was more than justified.
shorty1k 2 years ago

Those games you mentioned kind of make the other pasture look a lot greener too...
shorty1k 2 years ago
The new Perfect Dark and Serious Sam and Painkiller games for XBLA look great! A good alternative to using their points system is to just buy online, through either eBay or Amazon or gamepointsnow . com
I have used all 3 and each have their advantages, but at least you don't have to go through Microsoft and end up with extra points leftover when you're through!
phreakindee 2 years ago
Well, I would use the Sega CD to play games like "Mortal Kombat" or "Power Rangers" just because the Genesis versions of them stunk.
Other than that, there really isn't much to say about the $450 Sega CD add-on. The TurboGrafx 16 CD Turbo add-on was much, MUCH better.

I was also surprised people didn't bug you about Shining Star Sega CD version or Vay either. If you watch the cut scenes for Lunar Eternal Blue, you will get a gist of how good the storyline is. In fact, I think it had one of the longest FMV cut scenes at the time.
a012345 2 years ago
Oh I was bugged about those but just not nearly as much as Lunar, PFM and Snatcher, and they were actually the two others I wanted to include but got tired of making the video and really my arguments against them are pretty much the same. Awesome games, not for me, hard to come by. I'll have to check out Lunar Blue though, I'll admit I haven't tried it.
