@pWneD885 There is a link to get the solar panels and a more detailed description of how to create the solar powered cell phone in the description box :)
a million dollar idea would save billions trillions in every aspect, energy wise, pocket wise, pollution wise only if we implement this DO-ABLE idea its very easy to get 5v from sun light using today existed technology that is very cheap and you dont have to make it usb i demonstrated it using direct line on & off power button to direct the power for charging or not.
THUMB UP if you want these big companies to come up with this idea.
I am trying to do this but when I went to my local home depot all the solar lights had circle panels (which were too big to fit on my phone) and only measure 2.2 volts (each) in direct sunlight.
1.) how big is your phone? I have a 4 inch display on my phone so it's pretty big, but not big enough to fit 2 of the panels that were on the solar lights at my store.
@psdodson12 1500mAh is 1,500 milliamp-hours, its basically a measurement of how long the battery might last. larger number is more life.
i wouldn't worry about putting 6v from these panels into your phone, as the nominal voltage for a USB cord is around 5v anyway. the phone will be the smarts of your charger, it should turn the charge off when they're done. as for the amperage, the solar lights' panels are probably puny and cant be more than 300mAh each. this will not cook your phone.
i would buy extra back cover then do this to it. and i'll change the cover when i want to charge my phone when i am out and about. where can i buy them panels from?
Easier to just use plastic velcro hook tape and rig up everything so that this is removable without voiding the phone's warranty. You readers should also check to see what your charging limits are for the batteries. Too much power feed equals exploded batteries.
Got your video link from LifeHacker. Just thinking, couldnt you have taken the extra couple minutes and used Black Shrink Tubing to hide the wires coming from the Solar Panels? It would've looked neater and a more professional install.
I have been saying that phones should run on solar to top up batteries I think this is a brilliant way of doing it. The mobile phone companies should take note we should see a solar powered smart phone on the Market soon.
@paulie1982 You sure you're getting 600mA? I've tried 4 different garden lights and am only getting 30 mA max each (or 60mA in a series). Everything else is spot on, 5VDC in shade and 6.5VDC direct sun. Curious about the mA though.
It'd be neater if you wired the wires to the two appropriate pins on the inside of your phone (depends on the type of phone where they are) so you don't have wires sticking out of the case. Nevertheless, great idea, I wonder why normal phones don't do this, those panels cost about a dollar each.
I know cell phones take 5v, but you've got 6v in the sun. So I’m assuming that this is safe?
Is it doable to take 4 of these and put them on a separate box? I know this isn’t AS portable, but does it offer a quicker charge since it’s more voltage?
How long would it take to charge your phone this way? 8 hours or 8 days?
There must be a way to improve on this with some AA batteries in the way or something?
@drsprite77 the phone btt has 3.7V. to charge it, you must give a much stronger current. your charger has 5V. if the current is stronger, it will charge faster. but at a to strong current, it will overheat and fry, so don't give it 4 solar panels. it also works with AA batts (4 will work great)
how many amps are those cells throwing at your phone?? neat hack for sure, bravo. A friend and I have been thinking about doing this to an old beater for a while now. Thanks for this
any idea how many amps those things are throwing at your phone?? neat hack i must say bravo, me and a friend have been mulling over this same idea for a while
@failureisepic If you use only one of the type that i have it wouldn't charge the phone at all, the voltage has to be slightly higher than the battery you are charging in order to work. I suppose you could get a larger panel and just use one, it'd make setting it up a lot easier and less messy too, i would have preferred to use just one
Dude I respect your creation, Why don't you present this to a phone company and let them utilize solar energy. Imagine if we get solar powered cell phones. That would be so awesome. Long story short, I LOVE IT!
@0pyrosocial0 Thanks :). I wouldn't do it on a decent phone either, thats ^^^ just a crappy samsung and i have a spare cover, just shows you it can be done tho. Will come in handy for 3 day long festivals
@KronoReaper I don't think so, i think its better built into the phone, all new phones should have solar panels on the back, i have no idea why they don't, do you?
@KronoReaper Hmmm, i'd maybe agree with them being expensive to make but they're very light, they weigh less than an LCD screen i'd imagine. I think its because the oil companies would lose out on making money by ppl using their chargers - which use electricity, which is made by burning either oil or coal and gives more money to the oil companies, i'm probably just being a conspiracy theorist. I dunno, i just think its stupid that if its sunny out you should be able to charge your phone
@paulie1982 in the end the ability to charge ur phone outside while using it outside is pretty neat and if they do grow the balls and brains to make them i would buy one at first sight
When can I buy solar panel?

@drsprite77 .6 of an amp
