who cares about boot time anyway? i don't use linux because it boots faster ( which mine does ), only fanboys care about such nonsense, besides, mandriva is a bloated noob distro. learn to install and customise a real distro like gentoo or arch then come back and try it again. hell even an ubuntu installation with no DM will boot in 5 seconds. ( discounting grub delay )
Windows is unusable for one or two minutes after you see desktop. At first, you are presented with some inactive screenshot of your desktop, then another few services are loaded, then the screen flashes(you get real icons now) and after that, you can use the computer.
This video doesn't do Linux justice. I have a fresh install of windoze 7 and Karmic Ubuntu.
Ubuntu: 23 seconds boot
windoze : 4 seconds boot
Of course, if I were to use both for a couple of years, Linux will remain at 23 seconds without ever slowing down while windoze will require a reformat every 6 months or end up getting atrociously slow.
Ubuntu 9.10, but it is on a really really slow computer (intel atom 1,6GHz integrated VGA, 1G ram) but i keep it in sleep mode, because that netbook is really one big battery ;) So it wakes up from sleep in a few seconds. Doesn't matter
On my netbook, Ubuntu (9.10) boots (but it waits a bit at grub and bios checks the things) in exactly 60 seconds. But windows 7, on my desktop computer boots within 30 seconds. I know now, what was the problem with the system in the video. The hard disk was very very old. (15Gigabytes and very slow reading speed). Defragmentation was not enough and it was also slow after the reinstalls. But i have a new system now, and i'm happy with it. :D
WOW that is INCREDIABLY slow boot times .... im useing a 1.6 ghz intel core 2 duo and my comp boots to debian stable custom compiled kernel in under 8 secconds
I used Ubuntu too. And i am going to use that soon. Mandriva is just for some months. But I have a quite slow machine, P4 @ 2,4Ghz, Geforce 5200FX video card 128Mb, 1GB ram.
i have a boot time on ubuntu ultimate edition 2.0 [8.10] of 35 seconds, and i am using it as an editing studio! on windows, 3 min. 45 secs and it still boots for another 30 seconds after seeing the desktop, on any windows machine.
All Windows users should know this ad, Kill Bill Tux (in this situation will be Windows and MS)

Cool, now i have a win7 (boot time 30 seconds) and an ubuntu 9.10 which boots 60seconds, but on a netbook
molbal 1 year ago
Ooops, I made a typo. The windoze boot time is 34 sec., not 4 sec.
Your Linux boot time really is 60 seconds? That is a very long time ....... which distro do you have installed? Ubuntu?

My (Ubuntu 9.10) computer boots and logs in within 36s (fully useable)..
I've got a 2.6Ghz processor (singe core) and 1 gigabyte ram..

I agree with you. (both) Slow boot can be annoying, but not a big problem. But Linux crashes hardy ever. :P Not the same as Windows XD
