@kookaburrakookaburra yer a little late judging this song... should critiqued it when it came out. It's already established itself as an iconic piece of rock history, so your considerations will likely be unheeded by many.
Re the English "clown" versus Nico's Teutonic "Klaun"; I suppose this an instance of what Freud called (gleichfalls, uebersetzt ins Englisch) "the narcissism of the small difference". The German "l" is more palatal than the English (which is more palato-dental), and the "au" diphthong is narrower than the English "ow". Still, the German rendering can still be clearly understood by English speakers.
Bueno, soy español asi que desconozco la letra pero entiendo que "All tomorrow parties" son las fiestas del mañana.....y uno va ya cumpliendo años y se emociona al recordar las fiestas del ayer.Una cancion preciosa.
The song doesn't "mean" anything. It is just a song. "Fans" or {acolytes} breathlessly attribute "meaning" to all these songs that The Beatles or Dylan or The Stones or The Velvet Undergound composed and oftentimes {in reality} the song was about a dog or someone else's son or perhaps a doorknob. Most of them don't mean much really. I certainly wouldn't consider the lyrics to this song to be particularly deep or in any way brilliant. Pretty mundane really. It is a nice song though.
I have been listening to this song from time to time for 30 years...my take is she's a fast-fading party girl, steps away from the gutter and utter madness. Sorta like Jane Says by Jane's Addiction. The muddy production is frustrating, it's another unearthly VU classic. The capitulating piano chords, kept up the entire song, is ingenious.
This album was goodfor it;s time. There's no justification for Rolling Stone 100 best having this rated higher than Pink floyd's Dark side of the moon, Yes' Roundabout or Close to the edge, Jehtro Tull's Aqualung or many others on the list. I guess RS raters are a bunch of ex mainliners. Maybe they were on smack when they made the list!
@davidstep1956 (IMHO) I think Rolling Stone rated the VU so well, not because of the quality or timeline of their music, rather the influence the band left for all the generations to come.
@davidstep1956 Music is subjective my friend, no list will ever be justified. For me I think this is the greatest record ever made, and I didn't even exist when it was recorded. To each their own, and all your choices are also legendary albums. Take care.
Some people might consider the Velvet underground's views as negative or pessimistic. i think they were realists. they just happened to live different lives (hard drug abuse) than most people.
I know the Velvets didn't fully accept Nico, and eventually threw off Warhol too, but I can't imagine this song being so good with a different singer. I've heard the demo sung by Reed, and it's good, but this is just so different and so perfect.
although, personally, Nico was an indispensable member of VU, the band never really accepted her. Warhol insisted that she got involved, being his present muse, she died tragically in the early 70's bleeding to death from a scooter accident i believe was in ibiza. no one heard her cryies for help and she bled out. R.I.P.NICO
This is my favorite VU song. Of the solo recordings released by band members, Nico's Marble Index is my favorite, with Desertshore close behind. There's a very good documentary about her called "Nico Icon."
Before the Sisters of Mercy, before Bauhaus, before Dead Can Dance, before Siouxie Sioux, there was Nico.
If you love Velvet Underground, I’m pretty sure, you’d like my music too. I made an apocalyptic song called "A Winter Evening's Tale”. This is also for all of us folks facing 2011. Do check it out in my channel or check it out in the video response of this awesome video. The song references Pilgrim's Progress, bible, Alice in the wonderland, peter pan, Shakespeare, Revelations, crusades etc. It also depicts eerie classical paintings. Have a folky new year!
I had this on cassette- never realized who it was as the lettering had all worn off. I'm playing it one day and my oldest brother stops and says 'Where did you get THAT?'
Nico was notorious for performing fellatio, and apparently, she was quite talented at it. Besides being a model, artist and musician, she was also somewhat of a groupie. She had a particular interest in Jim Morrison, and the rest of The Doors, too.
@desmonica1 So sad, i know. But surely if one is recorded then part of ones soul may live on if only in memory. Her voice did invoke such melancholic beauty, maybe the teuton in her, the triumph of the will.
wow, I only just now discovered that this song was original by the velvet underground. I only new it from an old nick cave record (his version is also pretty cool imo)

I went to see Nico live in a cellar stage in Northampton the year before she died. She performed with just a strange wind powered keyboard as accompaniment and the rendition of this was one of the most moving songs I have ever heard. From the Andy Warhol album it sounds a little cynical, a sort of "poor little rich g...irl" feel. Her version was half lament, half celebration for her life.
@Silverwings63 She was German; she was a top model in her time. She was stunningly beautiful, but a total headcase. This song is one of the greatest songs ever made,.
This song was written by Lou Reed in the Andy Warhol Factory days. It's not about a hooker but about a type of girl who would hang out there. I'm sure you know a girl like this today, a girl who is always at all the parties but maybe doesn't have money to pay the rent or buy lunch. She doesn't have a new dress to wear but she makes a used, second hand dress "a hand me down gown" look good. Fucking epicly awesome song. bad ass but in an artsy way. Loved it since I first heard it... I remember when: I was in a dingy hotel room in Paris with my brother, smoking hash out of a shitty african pipe, both of which we had smuggled in from Amsterdam.
The hash and the song blew me away, I can still to this day remember the pseudo hallucinatoins I had... man! That was back in 1993 lol!!!! I'm getting old, but better lol

@stoprejectingmynames I'm just clearing up I meant everyone in the VU hated Nico, not I hated everyone in the VU.
