As he mentions the colour being intense, I'm suspecting they're of superior quality; with the light being refracted with less "signal loss" as it travels through the diamond.

I'm not very fond of the idea of wearing diamonds and using it to compare people and their fortunes. Not only is it a dead stone, it's also quite dull and has no color, making it even more cold and dead (Not all, but it's the most common type). Diamonds are good for industrial purposes though, such as cutting hard surfaces, or making a computer work better by being integrated in microchips.

In order to grow a diamond in the lab, they need a base from which to grow it. In this case, it is a small, real diamond. So why can't they, after growing the diamond, just keep a few and break those down into seeds? The process will be self-replicating and (I assume) cheaper as they don't have to buy real diamonds.

True, the value ascribed to the things is far higher than it should be, and seeing how much suffering people's lust for the trinkets have caused, it is strange consumers are keen on them at all.

I would say that diamonds(and gems in general) are more important to humanity for their industrial and research uses than for ornaments. Of course, many of the more advanced processes would use synthetics, since they can take advantage of the accurate mixing of dopants and general deposition.

DeBeers control it mostly because they want to avoid "war diamond" from flooding into the market. I sell them, and through rappaport mostly. Well that's pretty kool, Although its not free money if u own a diamond machine. The energy required to make one would be very expensive and is not too different to solar panels. Solar panels are made from essentially sand, the cost comes from the heat energy required to grow a silicon ingot. I'm guessing the heat energy to make a diamond would be similar.

Why don't they just use lasers to cut diamonds to a particular shape? At the end of the video, a laser etched into the stone it was made in a laboratory. That laser at a higher power could easily cut a diamond at a greater precision than a human using hand tools and a spinning diamond encrusted wheel.

Diamond prices are high because it's controlled by a single company which monopolize the trade and limit how many diamonds actually goes inside the market each year. No competition means they set their own price.

The reason they have to laser etch that the diamond as 'laboratory' is because the major diamond dealers are fearful of loosing the massive amounts of money they can get for supposedly rare minerals. Also, lab made diamonds usually have no flaws that a natural diamond would have. I think it was the russians that first developed the method of making the diamonds.
