in my opinion. in the video, Maynard is comparing his life to the child.

the thought of a child chasing a sailboat is equivalent to "chase/follow your dreams."

If you pay attention in the video, the child gives the sailboat away to 3 girls, who assumingly throw into the water, where he can't get it back.

So thats like saying he followed his dreams, and fell in love, but his dreams were destroyed.
