I saw Gruberova perform an opening night Lucia at Covent Garden in the late 1980s...it was out of this world. If anyone understands the feeling of the role, she does. Her cadenzas remain the standard for me. Even here, so many years later, she remains an inspiration. Brava Edita!

@Endriking Inva Mula is excellent in this aria - the little of it we get to hear - but given as we don't have a recording of Inva Mula's singing the full mad scene, but only the first part plus some additions written specifically for the movie, it's really difficult to compare. Edita Gruberova is excellent. Also you are comparing a recording made for the movie with a live performance which is very different.

She is well-known for her "Effeckthatscherei" . (Mannerisms). Showing how good her technique is, is a cheap method to escape real interpretation of the pieces....that is why her facial expressions are funny--not to say ugly, because she tries that way to put emotion into her singing....If showing technique (which is actually the instrument) is fine arts, that is the question !

Well, Gruberova is known for her superior technique: she is one of the very few singers who hass full control over her breath and voice.

y ademas esta aria es para sopranos de coloratura, sarah es ligera ella puede cantar otras arias, la coloratura es una tecnica diferente a la que sarah nunca recurre, pero eso no quiere decir que sea mal cantante. yo no me imagino a la callas cantando algo de haandel y por eso es mala cantante?. no lo creo cada cual debe desarrollarse donde mejor le acomode el estilo.

decia esta aria esta fuera de su alcance, y sarah como te dire, ha estudiado opera, pero no es una cantante de opera, es de cross-over, canta arias, pero eso no la combierte en una cantante de opera.
