Sir, you are much more knowledgeable than i am on most subjects, but i have seen many negative reviews of those "faraday bags" on YouTube where they fail simple tests. I've used other people's ideas of wrapping my electronics in layers of plastic and aluminum foil. Are you taking further steps to protect your electronics such as placing your bags into true grounded faraday cages? Thanks for spreading you expertise on your videos. Don
clean any plastic coating around the rim of a paint can from the paint department in your favorite hardware store. the lid would make a very good electrical connection to the body of its a bare surface (no coatings). this would make a great tough openable and re-usable container.
thanx for the idea :) a suggestion: ask the good folks at the lds cannery if they would let you put parts in a number 10 can and seal it up with a decicant. fantastic faraday cage as well as a very robust container that will protect from humidity, water and dirt as well. great idea for radios, controls for pumps, generators, welders or any other device that requires electronics to run. get a couple of spares and seal them up
Why not just get a large box (cardboard or plywood) and wrap it with aluminum foil all the way around. Then just stash your stuff in there (chainsaw, generator, radios, etc.) You could make a door on the side, roll the stuff in, then close the flap and tape it shut including the tin foil.
Wish I could make it my friend. I hope there will be some videos or audio of the speakers. I read 1 second after on a 18 hr flight to the UAE or Abi Dabi it was bad timing to read that book. I would love to hear his latest thoughts on EMP and solar storms....
Those faraday bags look like the food pouches from the LDS storehouse. Maybe can get them cheaper there. Just an observation. I also use some of the computer/electronics static bags for small stuff like ipods and such.
@GoatHollow I have stored a few cases of oil and AVgas 100 should last for 6-8 yrs so I hope to have a running saw for 6 yrs post emp. Crazy? 1 gal gas is equal to approximately 300 man hours of labor so 200 gallons of avgas and oil to match would allow me to cut lots of wood. I know- the noise, the noise! But it can be done!
@engineer775 Am working towards electric chain saw, running off of inverter, battery set up. Just got my 12 volt generator working today, (GM 2 wire alternator on briggs and stratton 3.5 horse). Next step, wood gas for the briggs. Have 1500 watt pure sine ordered, so I'm moving along with it.
What did you learn from the EMP speaker at the conference? I wouldn't try storing gasoline for that amount of time, it oxidizes and polymerizes over quickly. making and storing Ethanol fuel would probably be the best bet...
and just a thought, but couldn't you use wood gas to run a chainsaw? sure you might be tethered to the gasifier somewhat but it's better than nothing? And what about a heavy duty 7 Horsepower electric chainsaw? just brainstorming here.
If it had a simple ignition wouldn't it be EMP proof already? For example something like a distributor (except that is probably one cylinder so I am not sure what you would call it, since it would only have one point).
Myself and the misses will be there! We're rather new to the "club" and eager to learn and network how we can. I read the book yesterday--all in one day. I couldn't put it down once I started (and I'm not much of a reader too). Extremely though-provoking, especially to this resident of the area his book centered on. Take care, great vids, will see you there!
Yes, but one thing how will You get a gasoline if all the electronics in near region will be fried out? (I don't wish that to happen actualy, but what if...) Of course if there is physical access to the gasoline container, shouldn't be a problem, but then again ....
I enjoyed Forstchen's book. I will be visiting in NC at that time (further East), but will be unable to make the lecture. I would pay for a CD of his lecture if it were made available.
Have you ever used Coleman fuel to run your chainsaw??? I was thinking that the stuff last forever even if you have opened the can...Food for thought , God bless...
whats up with that faraday bag? never seen one.Looks simple, actually looks like the ESD bags most computer electrical componets come in. Those work or are placed in galvanized can also? thanks

Husky 346XP is an excellent saw. Great power/weight ratio. I have one in my repetoire of saws.

Appreciate the info E776. I had no idea the husky saws had electronic ignitions. More prep money I have to spend now. gee thanks. :)

Looks like Engineer 776 was a little bored. And that's not the right way to treat your laminated bar.

How many years worth of fuel do you have for that chain saw in a post emp world?
