With Tiger Stadium now gone, the memory of what's been known as a "great opera house of a ballpark" lives on in this video. The whole state was behind that team, at a time when the Pistons were rebuilding, the Red Wings stunk, and the Lions were the Lions. There was nothing like watching the games on Channel 4 or hearing the wonderful Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey on WJR. And 25 years after that team, the Tigers are winning again. GO TIGERS!!!
When I grew up Detroit my favorite Tiger Memorey would have to be the 1987 pennant race when the Jays came to town up 1 game on the Motor City Kitties and they swept the series with the Saturday and Sunday games just being insane. Trammell won the Sat game in extra with a base hit and Larry Herndon won the Sunday game with a solo homer and Frank through the shutout. Best summer ever for me.
It sure brings back memories.. I was still in high school at that time! My mom still has The Detroit News paper when they won the 1984 world series. I miss those boys!

01:11 - I believe this was Lemon robbing Rod Carew of a two run homer with two out in the bottom of the 12th in Anaheim to give the Tigers a 4-3 win, which was actually in 1983.
Good job on remembering that lineup, although Juan Berenguer started more games as a fifth starter than Rozema. I can never forget Rozema trying to karate kick John Castino of the Twins in a bench-clearing brawl a couple of years prior; too bad he messed up his knee. My favorite play from 1984 -- other than Gibby's HR off Gossage -- had to be in the World Series when Lance Parrish stepped out for a pitch out, but Aurelio Lopez threw the ball straight and got the ump in the nuts."Bless you boys"
Terrific! Look at the 80's hairdos and the old uniforms, and dancing herbie... For those 2 minutes I was 8 years old all over again! Thanks for posting this
This was great. I was looking for anything Tigers and stumbled upon this video. Brings back great memories. And to see Dancing Herbie again, that was awesome. He was so much fun.
It was a sad day today though to hear about the passing of "The Bird"
On Junn 22nd 1988, they played the Yankees in what was Billy Martins final game ever in which there was a Rain Delay and when he came out dancing, they crowd went nuts. They were in the pennant race with the Yanks and who knew they Gay Red Sox would come and win the division that year.
LF: Larry Herndon CF: Chet Lemon RF: Kirk Gibson 1st: Darrell Evans/Bergman 2nd: Sweet Lou SS: Alan Trammell 3rd: Tom Brookins/HoJo Catcher: Lance Parrish Starting Pitchers: Morris, Tananna, Wilcox, Petry, Rozema Relief: Berenguer, Lopez Closer: Hernandez and Sparky of course! All from memory...that was a great TEAM!
'Bless You Boys' was the catch phrase of Tigers TV channel WDIV channel 4 sports anchor Al Ackerman. He would end a sports report of a Tigers victory with 'Bless you boys, this is the year' in 1984. After the Tigers won the world series in 1984, he followed this up with 'Bless you boys do it again' in 1985. Sadly the Tigers missed the playoffs in 1985, and only made the playoffs once more in 1987 before their World Series appearance in 2006.
If I remember right, WDIV sportscaster Al Ackerman (who was with WXYZ before that), who used to do a pre-game interview show with Sparky, started using that expression during the 35-5 start, no? SInce the economy and the other Detroit teams had pretty much stunk most years since the late '70s, these Tigers really made us feel better. By the way, does anyone have the old WJR radio intro music to games with Paul Carey saying, "Detroit Tiger baseball is on the air"?
mainly because detroit baseball hadn't been the same since the 1968 championship and 1984 was their first serious run for the title during that 16-year span
What a great time it was and I agree, I miss those games on channel 4. The now late George Kell and Al Kaline commentating! What stinks is that I had to think about my age when in the middle there was a baby with a tiger hat on,....... that baby is old enough to drink now!!
"Bless you Boys", was really a pat on the head by News4 sports anchor Al Ackerman a year or so earlier, when the Tigers could'nt do anything right. 1984 was a great year in Motown. never will i forget it.
One of the major reasons baseball is so great. It brings people together. I remember growing up in Detroit this summer. It was so amazing. George Kell and Al Kaline calling the games.
I love the dancing grounds keeper. I actually remember June 22nd, 1988 when there was a raind delay with the Yankees and Tigers he came out and was dancing to some motown music. Just really cool
They need to start playing this after games, in the tradition of "Go Cubs Go" or "Go Go White Sox." I mean, we have "Go Get Em Tigers," but it isn't quite as schlocky...
almost brings a tear to my eye. i wish i was old enough to have experienced the 84 season. hopefully we can experience something like that again this upcoming year.

Why were the Tigers known as the "Bless You Boys?"
carlinrulez666 2 years ago
As for Bless You Boys, Al Ackerman said it one night on the news and it stuck. He was a sportscaster on I think channel 4.
