I had never bothered to listen to Mario Del Monaco since I was led to believe that he had a flawed technique and that the only tenors worth listening to were Caruso, Gigli, and Pavarotti. Having just listened to a few of his recordings I am now his biggest admirer. Surely to God he must rank as one of the best voices of all times! Thank you YouTube for my "awakening".

I applause you for daring to think for yourself :) Now check out some other tenors like: Mario Lanza, Guiseppe Di Stefano, Richard Tucker, Franco Corelli, Guiseppe Giacomini, Nicolai Gedda, Jon Vickers. They all have something to offer, don´t get stuck with 2-3 favorites, they are all out there to make our lives brighter =)

@blupampurio Mario del Monaco ha interpretato il Nessun Dorma nel modo corretto, l'acuto finale non è stato concepito da Puccini ma inventato da qualcuno, non so da chi ma credo che sia stata un'aggiunta recente e per fini prettamente commerciale (un acuto finale fa decisamente più scena di una chiusura così no?)
Pavarotti è il tenore più conosciuto perchè è stato il più "venduto" non so se mi spiego.
Mario Del Monaco aveva una potenza pari, se non superiore a Pavarotti.

Grande potenza , il piu' potente di tutti , e grande interpretazione e suono di voce ....notare pero' che ha preso il SI finale intonato ma molto corto , scendendo subito sul LA ...si sa che e' e' piu' difficile per una voce di tale dimensioni stare lassu' a lungo . Un grande comunque , e comunque Una delle mie versioni preferite di Nessun Dorma qui su YouTube .

Sono un Corelliano, penso che il più grande Calaf della storia sia stato senza alcun dubbio Franco. Ma per Dio e per tutte le galassie, non riesco neanche lontanamente a capire come ben 87 persone abbiano avuto il coraggio di mettere "non mi piace" al "Nessun dorma" di uno dei più grandi tenori drammatici della storia. Vero é che la bellezza dell'arte sta in un gusto strettamente soggettivo, ma signori miei, questi sono dei geni indiscutibili, queste voci andrebbero ascoltate in ginocchio.

Io ho 39 anni e mio padre mi parlava di Del Monaco e per curiosità sono andato a vedere i video su youtube: sebbene sia un grande ammiratore di Big Luciano, devo ammettere che Del Monaco ha fatto interpretazioni lirico-teatrali da fenomeno e la sua voce ha qualcosa di straordinario che trasmette un'emozione diversa......vedere e sentire "Vesti la Giubba" (penso cinese dai sottotitoli)......da brividi.
y además miren como represneta al principe ignoto, casi siento su dolor...no solo canta sino que interpreta la actuación, y no para esconder mala tecnica, pues es perfecto, ...más bonita que la de pavarotti...
Con tutta onestà, ma paragonarlo a Pavarotti secondo me è impossibile. Nessuno e ribadisco, nessuno, almeno in questo momento, tra i tenori in circolazione, ha il timbro fine e versatile di Luciano. Assolutamente, Pavarotti è unico e inimitabile. Bella l'interpretazione di Mario Del Monaco, ma non paragonabile a Luciano.
Pavarotti ha sido un gran tenor pero no hay comparación con la interpretación de Mario del Mónaco. Pavarotti, siento decírtelo desafina en las entradas, escúchalo, y te darás cuenta. El timbre de Luciano quizá te pueda ser más agradable al oído, pero tanto la afinación, como intensidad la de Mario es infinitamente superior. Te lo dice una española sin pasión ni por uno ni por otro sólo con objetividad.

The best thing about this video is that he is ACTING, not just singing... In my opinion, this is the line between singers with "just" a great voice and really good Opera singers... And this line is crossed by so few... This is the first version of this aria in which I could feel the triumph of Calaf. Actually, this is the ONLY one in which I saw the tenor smiling... Great!!
A great tenor - no - a supergreat. So few there have been. God bless them all. del Monaco is in that super select band: Caruso, Gigli, Bjorling, Corelli, Pavarotti. The Great Ones.
The public is not interested in Opera or Fine Art or anything along those lines. It were they are at present and are of part of humanity. I am just grateful that I was introduced to the superb voices of the past such as Del Monaco's, Corelli and others and that voice from God,, Jussi Bjorling. And I much appreciate your selfless help in expanding my operatic education. Please keep posting these marvelous videos. Thanks!

Cheapen the arts, symphonies and opera companies folding left and right, and a little light show and heavy beat has the lemmings believing they're witnessing the Second Coming. What has been lost since the cultural revolution of the 60's is incomprehensible to the modern consumer.

Some people says Pavarotti is better than Mario. I guess not... Mario's voice is simply the best one ever, but there's one thing that makes Mario to become a god: his attitude.

@mauriciomille Pavarotti certainly made this aria more popular than it was by singing it at the end of every concert& Pav does a nice job with it but try Corelli's&Lauri Volpi. Enjoy
@BrianDonaldMcKay Again they are 2 of my favorites ,preferring one over the other only marginally,depending on the role they are singing. I like FC InTurandot,Chenier& Tosca.I preferMDM in Pagliacci,Forza Ballo Ernani.Corelli has a wonderful mezza voce,diminuendo&beautiful dark quality.DelMonaco has beautiful diction&phrazing.They both had the ability to thrill the public, even in their declining years, which was amazing.Enjoy

Their similarities, apart from the natural timbre of the voices, were greater than their differences: both cut a fine figure on stage, both were to a degree self-taught (I believe), and both seemed to have flawless techniques.

Io ho 39 anni e mio padre mi parlava di Del Monaco e per curiosità sono andato a vedere i video su youtube: sebbene sia un grande ammiratore di Big Luciano, devo ammettere che Del Monaco ha fatto interpretazioni lirico-teatrali da fenomeno e la sua voce ha qualcosa di straordinario che trasmette un'emozione diversa......vedere e sentire "Vesti la Giubba" (penso cinese dai sottotitoli)......da brividi.

Con tutta onestà, ma paragonarlo a Pavarotti secondo me è impossibile. Nessuno e ribadisco, nessuno, almeno in questo momento, tra i tenori in circolazione, ha il timbro fine e versatile di Luciano. Assolutamente, Pavarotti è unico e inimitabile. Bella l'interpretazione di Mario Del Monaco, ma non paragonabile a Luciano.

Pavarotti ha sido un gran tenor pero no hay comparación con la interpretación de Mario del Mónaco. Pavarotti, siento decírtelo desafina en las entradas, escúchalo, y te darás cuenta. El timbre de Luciano quizá te pueda ser más agradable al oído, pero tanto la afinación, como intensidad la de Mario es infinitamente superior. Te lo dice una española sin pasión ni por uno ni por otro sólo con objetividad.

The best thing about this video is that he is ACTING, not just singing... In my opinion, this is the line between singers with "just" a great voice and really good Opera singers... And this line is crossed by so few... This is the first version of this aria in which I could feel the triumph of Calaf. Actually, this is the ONLY one in which I saw the tenor smiling... Great!!

The public is not interested in Opera or Fine Art or anything along those lines. It were they are at present and are of part of humanity. I am just grateful that I was introduced to the superb voices of the past such as Del Monaco's, Corelli and others and that voice from God,, Jussi Bjorling. @BrianDonaldMcKay Again they are 2 of my favorites ,preferring one over the other only marginally,depending on the role they are singing. I like FC InTurandot,Chenier& Tosca.I preferMDM in Pagliacci,Forza Ballo Ernani.Corelli has a wonderful mezza voce,diminuendo&beautiful dark quality.DelMonaco has beautiful diction&phrazing.They both had the ability to thrill the public, even in their declining years, which was amazing.Enjoy

@sugarbist My comment referred to the posting of FC singing Celeste Aida. But I agree with you. Their similarities, apart from the natural timbre of the voices, were greater than their differences: both cut a fine figure on stage, both were to a degree self-taught (I believe), and both seemed to have flawless techniques.

@sugarbist Maybe it's the recording but he's often under the notes. Especially in the first first verse. And obviously on the last Vincero. That final B just aint happening for Mario here.

The problem in the Kiepura recordings is
the German which makes it more awkward to sing .Having heard both singers Kiepura was the greater artist as
well as singer, Del Monaco was a power house of whom one tired easly ,no nuance
whatever unless you always liked "loud
bellowing".

Forse l'ho già postato, ma a mio avviso Del Monaco è stupendo. A breve distanza, brevissima, Corelli. Poi Di Stefano, Valente, Pavarotti e gli altri. Il pathos dato da questi interpreti, tutti italiani, è da lacrime agli occhi, ma la potenza di Del Monaco le blocca.

@dziady1 Kiepura wasa fine tenor. I listen to2different recordingsof Nessun Dorma.He scoopsTheB-natural in1of the recordings.The live1 from Vienna with the red label. If you compare the blue label with the red.Healso changes the words at the end of Di Quella Pira. so that the high note rings better. By the way the mistake youTHINKu hear at 2.39 is MDM just touching the B-natural as it's written by Puccini,therefore adhering to the composer's wishes as most other tenors don't,So much for Artistry
