I believe that both sides bring some important truths to this matter. In one sense, Jesus taught about this remarkable love that the Father has for the lost (Luke 15)by three strong stories/parables. For the prodigal son, it could certainly be viewed as a mulligan or Do-over. Even the prodigal son pondered the chances of a father's acceptance on his return. There is no one saved apart from Jesus Christ. There may be people now who have never heard of Christ who will hear of them before their time here is gone and believe, but no one is saved from their sin apart from Christ.
