In the book, it was said that looking into the nothing was like suddenly becoming blind. You literally could see nothing, unlike the movie depiction of a giant black storm cloud. Granted, the original depiction would have been hard to create on the big screen anyways.

In the book the nothing didn't suck people or things into it as it spread, those who came too close to it had the uncontrollable urge to throw themselves into it. Throngs of people would march off in a disturbing ritualistic manner to throw themselves into it.

If it weren't for Gmork (the wolf) biting down on Atreyu after it's death, then Atreyu would have thrown himself into the nothing as well.

Also, those that entered the nothing became a lie in the real world.

@technologic21 it represents the biblical god, bible, church, religion, taking away peoples life, dreams, hope, thoughts, and happiness and turning them into unfeeling, unthinking destructive drones. The biblical god is moses (immortal warlock), after his being forsaken from egypt (he wanted to rule egypt) and his descent into madness.

Religion wasn't like the way it is back when the bible was first created, as it is today. Listen to album master of puppets and you'll get an understand.

@technologic21 i always thought of it as a great metaphor for depression. Depression is lack of desire, lack of pleasurable feelings, lack of motivation, lack of enegry, and feeling generally empty. More often than not it means not feeling sad, but feeling absolutely nothing.

I have my own religion. It's non-coercive and self-liberating in its honest practice....my liberty just needs to be sealed by Christ. It isn't like anything else in this fucked up world is any less delusional and destructive.
