  • I have the TurboGrafx-16 for the iPhone and R-Type and there is no flickering. They must have done something to the emulator to fix some of the old problems.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom That's cool! Thanks for sharing that for everyone.

  • For the 20 continues to work for me I had to hold the select button on the title screen and then set button I to turbo and press it, not button II like somebody else posted. Not sure if it's an error or just different for different TG-16s.

  • Too bad they never made a NES version.

  • @chaseman94 Well, Nintendo already did their job with publishing the arcade port.

  • @IvoryGecko1993 You're right . At the time Nintendo was already getting money hand over fist so what was one less space shooter game for the NES. We still had Gradius and other games like this to satisfy us.

  • Pretty sweet dude

  • This game was a great game. I always died in this game. I always played R-Type II, III, and Delta.

I was on the verge of breaking my controller.

  • R-Type, the game made by the gods is what should be on the cover or on the arcade machine. R-Type was a turning point for me in the arcades... It pulled me out of the old Tempest machine in the corner :P I bought the SMS version but when it finally came out for the turbo I just had to have it... Taking it home was a torture... No TurboExpress yet... For me it was easy because of all my previous experience in the arcade & the SMS. Easy, but too easy... most of my arcade patterns/timings worked :(

  • I'd say the hardest arcade shooter out there is TRUXTON

  • @ViperVenom128 Oh man........that is a tough one! Yes, totally.

    Thanks for watching! :)

  • The 20 continues trick is this:

While at the Title Screen hold select, and Turbo press the II button on your turbo pad (or X on the Classic Controller) and you will earn more credits. Get 20 credits and immediately press Run (or + if playing the VC release) or you'll be forced to watch the demo, and do it all over again. Thumb this up so I can give those who play this the upper-hand.

  • @IvoryGecko1993 Shhh! Don't give secrets away! Ha ha. :)

    Thanks for watching!!

  • lol, judging from what you've said in this review, I'm not too sure if this is a game of my interest. Of course, I do tend to spend a lot of time on certain other hellspawningly difficult games (like the Ghouls n Ghosts/Ghosts n Goblins series).

I'll see about taking a look into this if I ever find the chance.

Great review as always Chris. :)

  • @JamesmanXtreme Ha ha. Yeah....it's definitely not for everyone. It REALLY ticks me off! :)

    Thanks again for watching!

  • Hey, Spida. Have ever heard of R-Type Complete? It was a CD version of R-Type for the Turbo CD and boasted improved music and anime cutscences. I don't think it was released outside Japan and I don't think the Virtual Console has that version.

  • @tiakpark Yes, it was only released in Japan. It is weird, on the PC-Engine they released 1/2 the game on one chip (R-Type 1) and 1/2 the game on another chip (R-Type 2). Ha ha. Weird! So, then they released the "complete game" with added goodies onto CD. Never played that one before, have to try it sometime. :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • Which version of R-Type is the hardest?

  • @stale3411 I can't say I have played "all" of the home ports. You know? But, I found this one to be a tough one (I can't seem to finish it, and I'm usually pretty good at shooters. Ha ha). Have you played any others?

    Thanks for watching.

  • @stale3411 DX on the gameboy, since you have 3 lives, 0 continues, and you have to go through both I and II with these limitations, Including the small amount of power-ups. On top of that, the title is showing you dieing :P

  • Picked this up today for 10 bucks... I never played this version I had it for the Sega Master System.

  • @Hayseed1976 Very cool. I never played the Master System version before. I heard it was pretty good, eh?

  • "Have you always wanted to climb the mountains of Mars?" Sounds like Dr. Edgemar from Total Recall.

  • @Kousaburo I have heard that before. I WISH I was that guy (would love to be in the movies....). :)

  • @spida1a Haha, you should do a Total Recall re-dub where you play Dr. Edgemar. It might seem a little weird to everyone else but at least we can have a chuckle at it!

  • Funny...I don't ever remember encountering the green boss shown at 4:08 at the end of Stage 6; I only remember having to dodge and shoot a bunch of those crates for a minute or so. Was this boss on a more difficult setting or in a different version of this game?

  • @kevin12567 I have never seen it any other way in an American R-Type Turbo Chip. Interesting. Maybe you got some rare version...you should have kept it! Might be worth some coin. Ha ha. :) :)

    Thanks for watching.

  • I bought the R-type complete super cd version for my duo. It has unlimited continues, cd audio and cut scenes. Chris, you should have invested in this version. : P

  • @123doomdoom Sigh...the PC-Engine got everything cool. :)

  • @123doomdoom Sigh...the PC-Engine got everything cool. :)

  • @123doomdoom Oh really? Thanks, I must download it now.

  • @egg64 Also, I just found out that you can change the difficulty level in the CD version. At the title screen, press select to choose east, normal or hard. cheers.

  • You always have great reviews. I think R-Type is one of the best classic games out there -- really ahead of its time IMO. The pod is still a unique feature for shmups. What do you think of the DX version in comparison to the original?

  • This brings back memories of playing this game years ago!

  • @stormmoss Very cool! Thanks for watching!

  • @spida1a Indeed so. In fact, this is one game that I never got to play in the arcades. Wonder if any arcade still has it?

  • @stormmoss Hmm, good question. I used to play it a little bit. Not as much as most of my friends did though. You know?

  • @spida1a Not a clue my friend. Turbografix was a one of a kind system let me tell yas!

  • love r-type, this was one of the best ports at the time of release

  • @matthewdoucette It was definitely one of the best ports. It deserves a little more recognition. :)

    thanks for watching!!

  • can you even do that 20 credits cheat on the wii version

  • @tomservo3001 Hmm, that's a good question. Anyone here know?

  • This was the first Turbografx Virtual Console Download, and I can't beat the game. Can you help me cheat? I heard you say something about the "20 Credit Code " at 4:32-4:37 Can you tell me the button combo on how to acheive this, and where you found it whether it's Turboplay, or Turbografx 16 and Turboexpress Secrets Vol. 1 or 2 LET ME KNOW!

  • this game frustrated me because you lose all your weapons once you die. there is no such thing as game genie for the turbo grafx so the game is basically unplayable. the "game" essentially becomes a job, rather than a fun experience, especially for the casual gamer.

  • @scir91 It is a frustrating game, that is for sure. :)

    Thanks for watching.

  • I has this on the master system. I always thought it was hard but no where near one of the hardest shooters.

  • @MMZen I never played the MS version. Thanks for sharing and watching.

  • This game IS FREAKING HARD AS HELL !!!! I think I could only clear 3 or 4 levels when it first came out. Plus, I didn't know about the extra credits trick at the time ! I wanted to beat this game so bad, but it's just, flat out, TOO HARD! Oh well, YOU CAN'T BEAT THEM ALL ! Awesome review spida1a ! I can't wait to see your reviews on EXILE AND EXILE 2 : WICKED PHENOMENON ! I beat them both, and I'm planning on playing them again soon ! I love both of those games ! Take care spida1a !

  • R-Type is a game I do really like. But, I don't get "addicted to it" as much as a lot of people (and if you don't.....then you won't want to memorize it enough to beat it, you know?). :) :)

Ah, the Exile series is a lot of fun. I'm sure they'll be coming soon...

  • i realy thought that super r-type was the hardest r-type ! even r-type 3 in loop2 is easier then the first one!xD

  • Ugh, yeah. I remember Super R-Type. The slow-down was pretty intense also, you know? Ha ha. :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • R Type II in the arcades is prehaps the worst in terms of difficulty. 6 stages of pure hell.

  • *cough* Gradius 3 on arcades *cough*

    XP

  • @Corad4 Heh heh, yeah that game was nuts too.

  • Perfect review! You're absolutely right about the difficulty and destruction of software due to frustration.

I'm not even going say what I did to my first copy of this game but, luckily I managed to find another one in later years.

No joke, people. This game is gorgeous but, it will absolutely make you want to pull your hair out!!

If you suffer from implosive anger, DO NOT pick this up. Just play it on ME or Yame instead.

That we if you get angry you can just delete the game. :P

  • No thanks, i won't get this one on VC XD

I will stick with Delta, it'S already making me pull my hair off my head :P

Still it DOES look like a good shoot-em-up :3

    NIce review Spida1a ^o^

  • Hey, thanks a lot! I'm glad you liked it.

What is Delta? Do you have any hair left? LOL! :)

  • @spida1a Well Delta is R-Ype Delta, for the PSX. Also, yes, do have hair left XD

I say it made me pull my hair off my head because... here, stage 4 is like

You face right (like always), you are not limited to the screen horizontaly, the stage scrolls VERTICALY, Later, Squars comes out of the BACKGROUND and if you are where they pop on the play field, instant death. Also the boss starts in over-head view and throws missiles that are about 45% of the screen's height lol

    Like... ouch...

  • R-Type is too slow compared to Gradius and other shooters and yes I'm mostly in the minority of people that hates this game and find Gradius game harder, but if want a shooting game by Konami that will drive you Mental Ward than I suggest picking up the Gradius parody Parodius, this game with its visually crazy graphics and crazy

difficulty(namely Gokujō Parodius!)will make you insane. The main reason no US release was the US government wanted us all sane, this would have made gamers nuts.

  • well the Phrase "in the demo, even the computer can't beat his own game" isn't quit right ... I mean maybe the prgrammes let play her children or someone else to record a demo play.

  • Lol! Well, you could be right but it's still the computer playing back the demo.

Plus, if that's the case....then, it's pretty dumb of them to have someone inexperienced record the demo. I mean, the whole reason for an "attract mode" is to...."attract" someone to the game. You know? Seeing that definitely doesn't make me want to play it at all. :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • i'm so skipping this. I suck at shmups and tend to have little patience for sadistic gameplay..... :)

  • im so glad someone is reviewing these games. I think i was the only person in my town of Flin Flon Manitoba to actually have a turbo grafx 16 and this game drove me insane. im glad to hear it is considered one of the most difficult games because no matter how many times i played it, once you got killed and lost those power ups it was extremly difficult to get back on track and took tons of skill and patience to become a force to be reconded with

  • I agree with you. Definitely!!

Some games, like Ghouls 'n Ghosts, that require a slight memorization....can be frustratingly addictive. R-Type wasn't as addictive, in my mind, as some and so I had a lower tolerance for it. But, I still liked it.....

    Thanks for watching!

  • Wow...I only have R-Type Final and it took me a long time to beat it. On KIDS mode.

That kind of difficulty is HORRID. Also memorization sucks. I don't care what you "super-gamers" say. Memorization sucks. It really does. I'd rather just play shoot and avoid games. Those don't make me want to commit suicide. OH, and by the way, that memorization comment also goes for Ghosts and Goblins too.

  • UGH! :)

GandGhosts I thought had a slightly more "addictive" quality to it. You know? So, for me anyway, I had an easier time WANTING to keep playing even when I kept losing.

R-Type....not quite as much. Hee hee.

  • good review, shame the flicker lets it down, oh well!

  • I beat this game for the Master System.

  • I never played the MS version. But....I "bow" to you. :)

  • I Actually Have This Game And Play It Sometimes, it Gets So Horrificaly Difficult And Im Surprised To See Somebody Advance And With The Fickering Graphics How Could You!!!

I CANT EVEN Imagine Getting That Far

    With The Sophisticated X-box Graphics.

  • great review.

  • Thanks !

  • How do you do the extra credits trick on the wii?

  • I agree with most your reviews, but not this one. This game is 5 out 5, easy.

I don't agree with knocking it because of hard it is. It's suppose to be hard and it was a pioneer for shooters to come.

  • Cool. Thanks for watching! :)

  • The DEMO can't win LOL

  • LOL. It sucks worse than I do. :) :)

  • Hi there spida1a,

My husband is a BIG fan of Image fight! Can you upload game reviews on image fight? My husband will surely love it.

    Please???????

  • Hey! Thanks for watching!

I don't currently own Image Fight. But, I'll definitely track one down and put it on my "import" list to review sometime. Thanks for the request!

  • This is one of the only TG16/Duo games I couldn't finish. Just could not get past the 'Green Dots' stage. Grrr, getting frustrated just thinking about it!

Your reviews are just awesome. Thank You!

  • Ugh! Let's not talk about this!!!

    Hee hee!

    Thanks for watching!!

  • I still have nightmares about not beating this game..i wish i wouldnt have despised it but when your 8 years old and waste hours upon hours trying...ehhh

  • LOL! Oh man.......I hear you!

  • What did the "full 8 stages" line mean? was the Japanese version cut down?

  • In Japan the game was split onto "two" HuCards originally. So you had R-Type I and R-Type II (two separate games). They did eventually release R-Type Complete on a CD with the entire game. But, we were special at the time and got a FULL one. :)

  • Aah, Did R-Type 2 come out in the US on card?

  • Nope. We just got the FULL R-Type on one card. ;)

  • Nice! Have you tried the XBLA version yet? They also added a pseudo-3D option for it.

They've made it really easy though by letting you continue where you died as an option. Though not being powered up fro some boss fights gives you no option other than to kamikaze your way through.

  • Pretty good port of it's time though i agree spida the flicker keeps it from being perfect.Still that's irem for ya,any shooter they ever made is pattern based.

  • I agree. I thought it was the best port of its time but man.....that flicker was something else (that one boss I show in the video literally made you disappear, hee hee!)

  • That it was then but afther irem released r-types for the,PS1 that became the best way to play the arcade version at home.I keep the TG16 version around as a backup.

  • Still an awesome video on one of the most brutal arcade games of all time.

  • Thanks man! As always!

I wish YouTube would figure out their "frame rate" issues all of a sudden. Ugh!

  • Yeah, I heard a lot of videos were somehow getting messed up on this site.
