Hmmm. The customer probably was afraid to force the airbox cover. It *is* a pretty tight fit in the post-2007 smart. The earlier models, in both petrol and diesel were slightly easier to get to. Additionally, this filter p/n is the same used on my former '89 Mitsubishi Mirage! Nice to know they didn't design an entirely new filter for the 451 smarts.
Wish my 2009 was that easy....

He may have had a Brabus also which uses a cone style filter
