Uh No. Then maybe. Now no. Oasis, The Verve only good bands still kickin it. The UK is full of absolute shit indie bands who all sound the same, wear tight pants and think there Oasis. Fuck The UK Music. There's no variety whatsoever. Chris Martin is a weasel, and his band is overrated, and Radiohead puts me to sleep. At least in the U.S. you get a variety of different types Rock music. Like our style of music or not, at least there's creativity.
Your'e right to a certain degree. I don't dig Oasis, Radiohead nor Coldplay. They're all mainstream. I'm talking about My Bloody Valentine(Ireland), Echo & the Bunnymen, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, Spacemen 3, etc. Need I say more? These were/are damn good U.K./Irish bands that the U.S. bands cannot compare to.
You have selective memory. I could name ten bands from america that are great from that same time period. You are being really nationalistic which is strange. Like you made all the music yourself or something. There's been a shitload of awful music form the uk too. Maybe you would be someone that makes the shitty music.
Off the top of my head bands from this time period only that I remember enjoying..Husker Due,Pixies, Weezer,Pavement, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Early REM ,matthew sweet, dinosaur junior, talking heads
,the pretenders, early prince, pere ubu
If it makes you feel better. I'll capitulate to you and proclaim that Britain is sooo much better than America. I know you guys are always keeping score and steaming on the inside over this shit. So congrats.
I was the only person out of all the people I knew back in the early 90s that liked almost exclusively brit pop and the music currently coming out of Britain at that time and I went to a big uni. It was either grunge or hippy stuff. I had to look at the college radio scene in America to compare. Before grunge hit. Although I find Nirvana to have made some amazing tracks., They are just so tied into the grunge scene its hard to separate them.
Didn't Bob Mould used to front the band Sugar ca. early 1990's? I used to watch MTV's 120 Minutes back in the 1990s and saw them. Didn't really get into Sugar for I was into at that time Ride, Adorable, The Jesus & Mary Chain, a bit of Smashing Pumpkins (saw them live in 1992) & The Boo Radley's "Everything's Alright Forever".
Yes, he was. I was totally into those bands too. I saw the stone roses live from their last album.. People kept yelling out Oasis songs for them to play. Rude, but funny. Poor guys never got the respect the deserved. Thanks for reminding me of the Boo Radley's! How about the The La's or Luna? What was that magazine that was devoted to this music? Gosh I can't remember the name, but evan dando was in every issue strung out of crack when he was hanging with Oasis
I think American music is really pumping right now ukpunk. I'm so impressed with the bands I'm hearing. From my morning jacket. the strokes. tv on the radio, its fucking endless. My favorite artist is aphex twin, btw. Dunno if you heard of him. Another band that I like form the UK is The Doves. I love them. Have you heard of Cassette Boy?
Since I like you and can't stop talking so much I thought Id point you to a vid of my dads band from the 60's. He was/is a professional singer. He sang and wrote this song
I don't know if you read my comment below, but my sister dated Mark Gardner a couple years ago. She never would have known about ride if it wasn't for me. So I am responsible for getting Mark Gardener laid. Seriously though. I never got to meet him, but my sis says he is awesome and a great guy. We both love the song Vapour Trail
Blast from the past. Saw them at a one day festival in Slough during the early 90s (think about 92) They were fab. Remember walkin back to the train station with my ears just ringing. We missed our train and only got as far as Reading where we all ended up kippin at the station. A gaurd let us sleep in the carriage of train parked up for the night. The longest night of my life, But it didnt matter , id just seen Ride. Happy days.!!
used to love this when i was 17; the song is still great but the video is ridiculously cringey now; marks hair OMG. And the guitarist looks like David Walliams!
One of my favorite Ride songs but I just can't get over Mark Gardener's hair. It looks ridiculous in this video. Much better 'doo in the "Twisterella" and "Taste" videos.
I play this song, like 10 or more times a day. Reminds of the good ol' days of shoegazing. @ gtr71 You are absolutely right. The best bands & music come out of the UK!
Unfortunately your average '90s douchebag in cargo shorts is only gonna remember Soundgarden and those clowns who snuffed the rooster before going out like a hard rock cliche. LONG LIVE RIDE!
This vid popped my Ride cherry! I saw it on '120 Minutes' and had to have everything they put out NOW! Amazing live band, an aural orgy!! For sure one of my desert island records!

oh, this takes me back! Saw them at Letchworth town hall (where the caretaker unplugged them for being too loud! -still got my daffodil somewhere!) and in Germany at the time of Euro 90 where they wore Germany shirts - Germany hadnt beaten us at that point so they survived!!! If anyone's got Chains, please post cos I LOVED that song so much!
Great clips but they were awesome live - the 'shoegazer' tag was unfair I thought. They didn't jump about the stage but that wall of guitar sound was something I have never seen any other band do live. The best live performance I have ever seen.

This song is very, very good. I personally don't think they got near it again, although I do like a lot of their others. Such a good sound they made live (even though the singing wasn't always the best!)
Alan Mcgee's attempt at recreating the Beatles image before he discovered Oasis. Who themselves, later invited the Ride guitarist join them on bass.

It all goes back to the Beatles, Stones, the Who, the Kinks, etc.

I dig all those bands and Oasis & Radiohead also.
