  • Alan Mcgee's attempt at recreating the Beatles image before he discovered Oasis. Who themselves, later invited the Ride guitarist join them on bass.

  • Not bad. I like this better than Chapterhouse.

  • Ha, funny vid, the drummers got bad tech. there...!

    Ride r rad tho

  • Not everyone has your "mad skill" on the skins, but he seems to have managed just fine.

  • *Love* this!

Lol - look at Loz. So young, so fresh faced - so dropping his stick - hee, hee.

  • Long live shoegaze!!!!

  • @ukpunk1

glad crelp74 brought this video back. It's better than the cvijetics version (he had to pitch the audio)

  • This is the fist CD my first boyfriend got me when I was 15 - SMILE> LOVED this song - was my fav off the album. Thanks!!!!!!!!

  • Who did the song "you're so special"??...It was a song back in the 90's.

  • do you mean 'Creep' by RadioHead?

  • Maybe your thinking of The Farm - Groovy Train

  • BOINKYBBoinkboinkboink! SQUADALAAAHAHAHAHzzzzzzzzzz!!!

    xxx NEW-DUH PAR-TAY!

    JIbblecoozleboof yog-sothoth

  • errr don't mind that comment... I was playing around with the audio preview and accidentally pressed post comment heheheh...

  • My sis dated the lead singer Mark a couple years ago

  • lucky for her they didn't marry. he look like shit today

  • well that's not a nice thing to say, he probably aged a little more than the others but he's a great guy if you chat with him. top guy Mark

  • How many sticks does loz drop!

  • Only the one.

  • Great song, terrible video.

  • The after-echo bit at the end is great. A superb song - takes me back...

  • Bought this EP 12" when it came out, and it was/is impossible to play at anything other than max. volume. What a track!!

  • They are great and were so friendly, well Mark and Lawrance. Andy and Stheohen wrer on a butter side when I met them.

  • thats right best bands are from UK

  • Uh No. Then maybe. Now no. Oasis, The Verve only good bands still kickin it. The UK is full of absolute shit indie bands who all sound the same, wear tight pants and think there Oasis. Fuck The UK Music. There's no variety whatsoever. Chris Martin is a weasel, and his band is overrated, and Radiohead puts me to sleep. At least in the U.S. you get a variety of different types Rock music. Like our style of music or not, at least there's creativity.

  • Your'e right to a certain degree. I don't dig Oasis, Radiohead nor Coldplay. They're all mainstream. I'm talking about My Bloody Valentine(Ireland), Echo & the Bunnymen, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, Spacemen 3, etc. Need I say more? These were/are damn good U.K./Irish bands that the U.S. bands cannot compare to.

  • Once again I see we agree!

It all goes back to the Beatles, Stones, the Who, the Kinks, etc.

They were alaways ahead of the American bands and it's been that way since then.

I dig all those bands and Oasis & Radiohead also.

ukpunk1, I got your back mate!

  • You have selective memory. I could name ten bands from america that are great from that same time period. You are being really nationalistic which is strange. Like you made all the music yourself or something. There's been a shitload of awful music form the uk too. Maybe you would be someone that makes the shitty music.

  • Well sleestack, name me these bloody ten U.S. bands. I'm not being nationalistic, just realistic. Please do not name Nirvana or Soundgarden.

  • Off the top of my head bands from this time period only that I remember enjoying..Husker Due,Pixies, Weezer,Pavement, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Early REM ,matthew sweet, dinosaur junior, talking heads

,the pretenders, early prince, pere ubu

If it makes you feel better. I'll capitulate to you and proclaim that Britain is sooo much better than America. I know you guys are always keeping score and steaming on the inside over this shit. So congrats.

  • You forgot Jane's Addiction. "Nothing's Shocking" was a damn good album.

  • I was the only person out of all the people I knew back in the early 90s that liked almost exclusively brit pop and the music currently coming out of Britain at that time and I went to a big uni. It was either grunge or hippy stuff. I had to look at the college radio scene in America to compare. Before grunge hit. Although I find Nirvana to have made some amazing tracks., They are just so tied into the grunge scene its hard to separate them.

  • it sounds corny but Bob Mould helped me deal with goin bald. no lie lol (like personal email messages and shit)

  • sleestack,

Didn't Bob Mould used to front the band Sugar ca. early 1990's? I used to watch MTV's 120 Minutes back in the 1990s and saw them. Didn't really get into Sugar for I was into at that time Ride, Adorable, The Jesus & Mary Chain, a bit of Smashing Pumpkins (saw them live in 1992) & The Boo Radley's "Everything's Alright Forever".

  • Yes, he was. I was totally into those bands too. I saw the stone roses live from their last album.. People kept yelling out Oasis songs for them to play. Rude, but funny. Poor guys never got the respect the deserved. Thanks for reminding me of the Boo Radley's! How about the The La's or Luna? What was that magazine that was devoted to this music? Gosh I can't remember the name, but evan dando was in every issue strung out of crack when he was hanging with Oasis

  • Also I was into The Stone Roses and early The Charlatans (UK).

  • I think American music is really pumping right now ukpunk. I'm so impressed with the bands I'm hearing. From my morning jacket. the strokes. tv on the radio, its fucking endless. My favorite artist is aphex twin, btw. Dunno if you heard of him. Another band that I like form the UK is The Doves. I love them. Have you heard of Cassette Boy?

  • oh, camera obscura is another band form scotland Im dingin too

  • Since I like you and can't stop talking so much I thought Id point you to a vid of my dads band from the 60's. He was/is a professional singer. He sang and wrote this song

    2sFdvQwIJVM

  • I don't know if you read my comment below, but my sister dated Mark Gardner a couple years ago. She never would have known about ride if it wasn't for me. So I am responsible for getting Mark Gardener laid. Seriously though. I never got to meet him, but my sis says he is awesome and a great guy. We both love the song Vapour Trail

  • Was that after or before he got balled?

  • is that a joke? I think originality is pretty much dead all around minus the most obscure bands.

  • Andy Bell's movement @ 2:15 foretold the coming of "Birdman"

  • The best bands in the world are from Britian!

  • lush's album spooky wipes the floor with them

  • When Ride 'entered' the charts, the day that Indie was truly born!!!

    Felt like a Daydream, allright.

  • absolutely brilliant

  • great song!

  • cambridge sea cadet hall (now a block of flats) must have been about 89/90.

anyone else at that gig? great times

  • Great shoegazer band. I saw them live in Hamburg in the early 90´s. Entrance was only 4 Euro, the cheapest concert ever for me - and the loudest...

  • You need to hear this loud through headphones for the full spine-tingly effect.

  • Remember hearing this on Peels show and rushing out to buy it, I THINK this was the on the EP with the roses on the cover?

  • For Andy.

    XXX

    Guido

  • LOVE this song.....Great memories....Oh god I'm getting old.

  • ...best band ever.

  • I meant to say @ 2:12 "starts" my favourite part of the song.....most excellent.

  • I could listen to this song on an endless loop for the rest of my life.

  • @ 2:12 is my favourite part of the song with Andy's lead guitar blazing over Mark's rhythm guitar and Steve's bass. Loz's drumming is most excellent.

  • One of the best shoegazer songs of all time.

  • T&C October 1990!

  • Blast from the past. Saw them at a one day festival in Slough during the early 90s (think about 92) They were fab. Remember walkin back to the train station with my ears just ringing. We missed our train and only got as far as Reading where we all ended up kippin at the station. A gaurd let us sleep in the carriage of train parked up for the night. The longest night of my life, But it didnt matter , id just seen Ride. Happy days.!!

  • I was there! The line-up at that Slough festival was *incredible*, like a who's who of Indie at the time. I think it was 1991.

  • Rickenbackers rumble under my shoes. A classic of my youth days.

  • WOOOOT!!

  • Riff-Tastic..... XXX

  • Mmmmmmmmmm, Mark,and Andy....GODS!!!!!!!

  • DAMN this brings back memories o_O

I was lucky enough to see them live here in Australia in 1990 or so. And I bumped into Andy Bell in the street LOL

  • sounds as good as ever.. ride were fantastic.

someday they will reform. wait and see..

  • used to love this when i was 17; the song is still great but the video is ridiculously cringey now; marks hair OMG. And the guitarist looks like David Walliams!

  • One of my favorite Ride songs but I just can't get over Mark Gardener's hair. It looks ridiculous in this video. Much better 'doo in the "Twisterella" and "Taste" videos.

  • ...best british band ever.

  • I was in love with them for a couple of years or so. Musically, physically, sexually... Oh, well...

  • god, i love this song so much. the early 90s ... there was just something special about the music then.

  • @gtr71: btw, I am also American, and I live in Europe (Germany) since 1990.

  • I play this song, like 10 or more times a day. Reminds of the good ol' days of shoegazing. @ gtr71 You are absolutely right. The best bands & music come out of the UK!

  • THANK YOU!!!!

  • Man this takes me back to the most wonderful times of my life! I loved the whole shoegaze era!!!!

I am a firm believer that the best music comes from the UK but just in case you think I am biased well I am not because I am American!

  • OM(F)G!Best song by my favourite band, still play this every week.Genius.Not sure about the dancing though!

  • Check out Mark Gardener's solo effort "These Beautiful Ghosts" Not bad!

  • Unfortunately your average '90s douchebag in cargo shorts is only gonna remember Soundgarden and those clowns who snuffed the rooster before going out like a hard rock cliche. LONG LIVE RIDE!

  • what a horrible thing to say...

horribly accurate, that is.. don't forget that they also hihjacked dr martens boots.

  • (in reply to pacifichessian btw)

  • you should be able to snuff the rooster as well as they before 'going out'

  • This vid popped my Ride cherry! I saw it on '120 Minutes' and had to have everything they put out NOW! Amazing live band, an aural orgy!! For sure one of my desert island records!

  • Is the video meant to be a parody of 'A Hard Day's Night'?

  • the whole contrast photo montage looks like it.

  • Nostalgia is miserable.....'cos it makes us realise how crap music has been for the last 10-12 years. This band should be everybodies memory of the early 90's.

  • I couldn't agree with you more!!

  • COULDNT AGREE MORE WITH YOU, MAN!

    Don't you hate nowadays music?

    cheers!

  • sorry I disagree. There's always crap and great music around at the same time.. yes you can claim this was a great era for alternative/brit rock but there was a lot of cheesy r&b garbage going on at the same time.. (Vanilla Ice?).. nowadays there is lots of good music, just look for it. There are tons of bands around now that take from Ride.

  • Makes me wish I was born earlier.

  • My favorite Ride video and song. Trying to find Dreams Burn Down video if there is one!

  • No video for it I'm afraid. I posted a live version though, check it out!

  • my 1st exposure to a staple of my music collection. very impressive tune. Mtv was crap when this pierced through onto my ears..

  • shivers down my spine.like all- (good shoegazing music)evokes.

  • I used to love this tune. Saw them in TCD Dublin. The guitar riffs are so kinetic, like Dinosaur Jr

  • dino junior are very similar for this track. glad you got it too!

  • this alwasy gives me the chills.

  • おれこのシングルだけでRIDEには満足した。

    この1枚だけで二度と何も買わなかったなー。

  • oh, this takes me back! Saw them at Letchworth town hall (where the caretaker unplugged them for being too loud! -still got my daffodil somewhere!) and in Germany at the time of Euro 90 where they wore Germany shirts - Germany hadnt beaten us at that point so they survived!!! If anyone's got Chains, please post cos I LOVED that song so much!

cheers - a happy old shoegazer!

  • who wore germany shirts? *confused*

  • shoegazing at its best!!fuckin ace

  • Thanks for posting this. I haven't seen this since those 120 minutes late nights in high school.

  • Great clips but they were awesome live - the 'shoegazer' tag was unfair I thought. They didn't jump about the stage but that wall of guitar sound was something I have never seen any other band do live. The best live performance I have ever seen.

  • awesome

  • i really can't think of a more exciting and innovative time for music than the early 90s. i miss those days.

  • Ditto

  • damn. takes me back

  • I love love love the Smile EP. Ride had the misfortune of being around when grunge came on the scene so they got overlooked. The Most underated british band ever!!! Just listen to "Going Blank Again" album, almost as good. Almost finished the tab for this song.

  • Quick count, they've got close to a dozen classic tunes, but I don't they ever managed to top this. This is the sound of my hot summer afternoons.

  • Sorry, "don't think."

  • this video is great, what tha fuck!!! fantastic!!

  • Brilliant song that still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it nearly 20 years ago. One of the most underrated bands of all time.

  • great fucking hair

  • Thanks for putting this back up, absolute quality song and band.

  • This song is very, very good. I personally don't think they got near it again, although I do like a lot of their others. Such a good sound they made live (even though the singing wasn't always the best!)

  • This disappeared! I watch this video at least once a day. Seriously. How good is this fucking song?

  • one of my all time favorite songs.
