no you don't need the wireless or ethernet cable but if you don't use one of those you do need to use the phone line to connect to the service. if you have any questions call there tech support 1-877-367-8486. they have a great tech support team or their website is very helpful as well

Do i have to set up the tivo service? i kinda thought i could just use the Tivo as a Dvr without the service.

Yes you will have to get the tivo service. They even offer a lifetime plan where you pay it once and never pay again.

Does the 3 red, white, and yellow wire get better picture the using the cable out to the tv or the other way around or the same?

Yes, if you have a stereo TV (NOTE: I said *IF* you have a stereo TV) use the red, white and yellow cables. Otherwise use a coaxial cable (sold separately) to connect the box to your TV, okay?
