@makdrumz, oh yes I agree .... like I had said just a matter of taste, I didn't do it so I should be happy to hear it, it's just styles some people like. I like Dave Wekl but even his style can get on my nerves because he is so good at a tech level that it doesn't feel FROM THE HEART but from the CHART. *like how many notes can I play on a page thing ... Now Buddy Rich was awesome with notes .... ; )
@jmillzz2 Why? Corea wrote it and performed it without the cheesey vocal. Corea's version much better plus he is the composer. Maybe this should be title Jarreua performs Chick Corea's Spain or some such thing.....
love it. my school has a group working on jazz as their music project and today they performed their arrangement of it for cello, percussion, electronic piano and suona. Very queer combination if you ask, but it sounded great too. Just thought of actually listening to the original.
I remember watching a clip where some minutes before the show began, the lead piano/singer and Steve Gadd were doing soundcheck, the singer told Gadd that the tempo seems not OK, Gadd just continue to play and say "no ur wrong, thats the tempo", The singer replies: 'Oh sorry Steve".
...after Joe Sample's incredible solo, Gadd had no choice but to display his utter genius. what a great band! ...a powerhouse version of the classic piece.
nothing tops the original though - Airto and Flora Purim, Stanley Clarke and Chick Corea....truly Light as a Feather!
I have seen Steve Gadd a million times...this was the most he has ever put out!!!!! WTF? woooow It was like Babe Ruth pointing to center field and hitting the ball out of the country...TuShay!
at the risk of many many thumbs down, and after decalring that Steve Gadd is my favourite drummer (because of tasteful restraint when needed), I have to say that his solos seem to be always the same...
@calafsdream Yeah, I've found that to be very true as well. In most of his solos he uses the same licks, namely his Mozambique pattern – the one from Late in the Evening with Paul Simon (see 5:10 to 5:20), his four note sextuplet "snare-tom-tom-bass" lick, tom snare bass triplets, and six-stroke roll based stuff (5:30, for instance).
JOE SAMPLE??? neva hear of em BUT he's crazy on the keys. His solo is killin. Steve Gadd...well let's say i won't waste words on him, cuz it wouldn't do him justice. This performance is amazing!!! 6 stars :D
i was being sarcastic. i know how important drums are being that i am a drummer myself. and the fact that you just said anything by steve gadd sucks lets me know how musically ignorant you truly are.
Damn right. That's the way drumming is suppose to sound, not this loud obnoxious hacking pounding (look at me ! look at me !) crap I hear from 90% of the drummers in the world.
The title is misleading.... I thought Chick was going to play piano.... I think most people know that Chick wrote Spain, shoulda just said "Al Jarreau - Spain.
tell me about it. i'm trying 2 learn this song cause it was called out at an open mic i was at on wednesday (really i just started playing a songo and the piano player just went into it so i had 2 go along 4 the ride). although every one though i smoked on the song (drum solo and all) i felt like i got caught with my pants down. i don't like that feeling. i had 2 completely watch everything everyone was doing cause i was lost in the composition.
He's certainly ONE of the best in the world. I absolutely love to watch Gadd play too. However, you can't discount the likes of Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuto and even Terry Bozzio... all have distinctive and unique styles.
I also prefer Chick Corea's version of this song over this one, but that's just my personal preference. :-)
Actually the lyrics were written by Arite Marin, a friend of Chick. Al added a small amount to it and got credit for a third which he actually didn't deserve but it was his album.

This is a live video shoot - check out how tuned-in the Director/TD are with the camera changes (there is even a short cut to the drummer at the head, for just two exposed accented kicks, and then bacl to Al - fuckin awesome attention to detail)
The drum solo is wrong for the song. Jack DeJohnette would have made it sing.

*** I can recall my desire, every reverie is on fire
And I got a picture of all my yesterdays
Yesterday, I can say. I got a kick everytime I see
You gaze at me
I see moments of history
Your eyes meet mine
And they dance to the melody
And we live again, as if dreaming
The sound of our hearts beat like castagnets
And forever we know their meaning
