Great trick. It amazes me how little credit Debbie gets when in the majority of illusions she's the person actually performing the trick. Don't remember this one, so a nice surprise.
There's one trick I remember that Paul performed I always liked which was with a "magic kettle". He went round the audience what they would like to drink and poured it for them. I've seen Lance Burton do the same trick with a milk carton, but I always preferred the P.D version. Do you have this?
Listen to the video wearing headphones. When the curtain "accidentally" drops all the way down (it's pretty obvious that he's holding some slack in the line so that it'll drop when he hands it to the guy), a moment after it drops you hear a distinct, wooden-sounding thump. So obviously something was opened or closed in those few seconds :-)
There was 2 secs when the curtain was down,I wouldnt fancy getting off a stool ,out of restraints, climbing under a narrow chair an through a trapdoor in that time.
look at the height ftom the floor of the hand when the trick starts to wheree it is towards the end, it drops a good few inches, despite being supposedly strapped
either, assistants hand reaching up through stage and hollow chair leg or, debbie's hand and she's already under the stage at that .. erm .. stage ...
when curtain drops, man holding ring is distracted .. .i think she may let go of the ring and re-grab it .. his distraction is covered by you thinking he's seen the curtain drop
I think the pulley thing is nothing. It could be attached to something else, someone else could be pulling on it, whatever.
It is clear to me that she went through the floor. She had to go somewhere, and I don't think she went around the back, you know, with all the people in the audience and all.
Debbie escaped through the floor when the curtain went down completely for a few seconds, supposively it was an accident, how convenient (that's the only possible explanation for the excape, I'm sure of that). And that was not her real hand through that curtain & the restraint it was a fake too.
Not as important, but don't know how he did the pully thing
The hand never lets go of ring from moment it grabs it. Its a second person now is it? So two people manage to vanish thorugh the floor in a second, amazing!
Part 2 at 3:49-50 the hand moves, this is after Debbie has supposedly gone thu floor! There is a metal sheet beneath chair at this point so where is the person whose hand it is?
Say what you want but the bottom line is how did she escape? Answer: Debbie escaped when the bottom of the chair dropped down, allowing her to Immediately slid trhough the Trap Door. And there were 1 or 2 assistance under the floor to assist her.
The hand was probably Fake It was not Debbie
The Pulley could have been attached to something else inside or else that lady from the audience was a plot & she was in on it. But the Hand & the Pulley are incidentials.
Why did you NOT post MOST of what I said? It was because I was correct & had a lot of good points. Why are you such a poor sport? Surely, you knew that someone would figure this out! You cut me off. That's poor sportmanship on your part. You're such a sore loser!!!
im a London black cab driver, whatever people think of him i have to tell you having picked the guy up hes a good bloke, very easy to spot the wheat from the chaff in my game.
Paul Daniels show is/was one of the best of this particular fare. I went to the same school as Daniels and I can remember his natural talent for magic.
I've only seen Paul Daniels perform via internet... Hats off to Mavis for uploading this clip, and allowing me to see a wonderful illusion performed by a wonderful showman!
Yes, but is the man holding the ring a planted assistant? I'm only guessing, and I could be wrong, but notice how his body hides Debbie's hand from view during the brief time when the curtain is fully down. Very convenient!
Irritating at times, but no one can deny his talent. For years, the staple diet of anybody in on a Saturday night was the Paul Daniels Magic Show, and this illusion was typical of the qulaity on it. Unsurpassed in 25 years (apart from some of David Copperfield's stuff).
have you got a copy of the other spirit cabinet trick that Paul and Debbie performed...the later version from their programme 'Secrets'. If I remember correctly Debbie wore a white outfit. To see that again would be amazing, plus that sawing in half trick where Debbie was tied into the box only wearing a leotard. Thanks
thanks MRJ, appreciate that. They are 2 of the best illusions performed by Paul. Anything where the lovely Debbie McGee is a damsel in distress, tied up etc is good by me. Cheers
I like his distractions... he keeps saying: "That's debbie's hand." though, by that time, it probably wasn't her hand at all.

Pulley is obvious trickery
21stCenturyNazzler 1 year ago
That is one very long arm to reach from below stage up an up a chair leg :0
MavisRileyJunior 1 year ago
It's a little naive to think it has to go all the way to the top of the leg?
21stCenturyNazzler 1 year ago
Whilst the trapdoor theory is very plausible what with the odd use of the sheet, what about going in the opposite direction?

1)Solid studio floor
2)Hand was still there being held
3)who was operating pulley?

But most importantly,I know that Debbie escaped through her sit that dropped down directly into the Trap Door in the Floor.
Has to be.There's no other possible way that her escape could have been done.

Could have been a Fake hand but I know that it was Not Debbie hand. Plus there were assistamce below in the Trap Door to assist with the escape.

That was a real hand no doubt, curtain never went down either after that. Your theories are way off,I know the secret!

Part 2
Hand with ring is @ 3:00.
Curtain drops @ 3:13 for a few sec. & that's when Debbie makes her escape through Trap Door
3:25 Paul cover the Trap Door after she has alredy escaped; after the fact :)
esquireyes 2 years ago
The hand is there and flexing around the ring at 3:50 after the fact also. Enough now.

i just have a problem with a planned assistant. =P
weird quirk of mine. but impressive trick.
katherineanne83 4 years ago
It looks like a planned assistnat but isnt,Paul lets go of rope handle as he hands it to him.Watch closely.
No need for a planned assistant!

DOubtful.Person pulling her hand would have to be a plant too.
The man doesn't move his position from when he is given ring to end of trick.
