@conniff44 has anyone got the karaoke lyrics for this amazing son if you have can you please e/mail them too me at vicparkin@yahoo.co.uk as I would dearly love to sing this to my wife for our aniversary can you help please.
All Johns first three records were so powerful and brilliantly produced so much so they still sound sensational 50 years on. The 60's music was so memorable and exciting and it brings back so many wonderful memories.
Good Song I agree with annie482000, they were all sing along, you could understand the lyrics. I think John Leyton was the highest paid singer in the UK at that time. Someone will correct me if Im wrong im sure
absolutely fabulous pop record, and almost 50 years old!!!! Meek was a genius, and Goddard a great songwriter, I just love this, a quintessential piece of great english "pop" music.
Marvellous record that I'd totally forgotten about, until driving home last night and "Gold" played it. Cheers the heart every time you hear it. Pax to all from Ian Smith. Xxx.
I have a small studio adjoining our kitchen. I have all the latest tech, digital sequencing, Roland GS voices, OC multitrack..etc, etc..and yet, I cannot get that 'sound'..I don't know how Joe Meek did it back then on tape, (although in the film I noticed a 'Binson Echorec' the Rolls Royce of echo units of its time.)..He was truly a recording genius!!! and Geoff Goddard's work was truly inspirational.!!
What's amazing is that he recorded these in a tiny spare bedroom of his mother's flat above a shop in North London, with none of the electronic equipment used today.
It always amazes me just how many songs from this period have the same chord sequence but end up sounding unique. Great arranging and production I guess.
There are lots of backing girls that don't get a mention on the label which seems a shame.
The record by Dean Friedman - Lucky Stars from 1978 is practically a duo and she sing as much as he does and gets no mention at all on the record label.
It's on YouTube, have a listen, you will see what I mean.
@northstar1950 Since I saw the film 'Telstar' I visualise the girl backing singers down a floor with their mics, singing in the loo.! Great song from Jeff Goddard and Joe Meek!
Joe Meek was always looking for the ultimate pop song. To my mind, he found it several times over, including this classic. Aloways brings back memories of my mis-spent youth!
My first listening...I saw this title in Wikipedia and thought it was a great title...but it a GREAT tune...love it!!! Thanks so much for posting for us here in the U.S.!!!
An utterly brilliant example of early English "pop" music with the unmistakeable stamp of Joe Meek. I think this was John's best record, and he is still around!! Good wishes John, timeless!!!
Still sounds great after all these years. I met John when he toured NZ with Adam Faith about 1962, and he signed some 45's for me, which I still have, along with his 2 HMV LP's
The Joe Meek sound has tremendous atmosphire.Hope that you are keeping well John, cheers from Peter in Christchurch, NZ.
I have to agree with the sound. No one seems to try and create an individual sound today, all records sound the same, (or is that just me getting old).
John has his own website full of info and other things at johnleytonofficial com.
I was grew up and was living in christchurch, NZ in the early 80's and remember this one from my huge collection of singles I acquired. I was only 2 in 1962 so missed these english singers when they toured at the height of their chart success. Love this JL track, evokes great memories of Christchurch
This song is EXACTLY what made me fall in love with oldies. As a little boy, I always liked the music that was recorded decades earlier.
As a teenager I searched for old Wanda Jackson and Fats Domino records rather than go for the hit music by ABBA or The Eagles. In my 20s it wasn't the New Wave that turned me on, but instead it was the waves coming from Annette's Beach Movie albums. Now I'm 45, and instead of Rap and Rock, I'm still hopelessly lost in the 50s & 60s. Oldies are forever!
I used to hear this one a lot on London's Capital Gold radio station. I don't remember it when it first came out, although I remember some of John's other songs, but this one is my all-time favourite. I like the backing - very haunting.
this record came out in late 1961 or early 1962 although i don,t think it was quite as successful as johnny remember me or wild wind.hope this is of some help.
I remember you saying you liked it very much when I first shared it with you, Marie. I hoped you wouldn't mind me sharing it again. In my opinion, it's one of John's best tracks.
Fantastic! Thanks for this. I think John just got swept aside as Merseybeat made all other forms of music obsolete. This was a great song that should have made number 1 but he's probably only remembered for Johnny Remember Me.
When I was young mum and dad had a box of oldies that me and my brothers played to death on an old record player. This with 6 White Horses on the other side was always a favourite. Haven't heard it for about 30 years, thanks for loading it on. :-)
Listening to this I shut my eyes and suddenly I drift back to my youth and think how lucky my generation were to grow up in that era.
