WOW!!! This is fascinating - it's so different from the album version. It's faster and the groove is straight instead of swung. the harmonic rhythm is slightly changed at the end of the phrase as well. Also without the wordless melody that comes at the start and between the two verses. sorry for the dissertation but i love this song above all other Radiohead songs.
This is not a demo, but recorded in 1999 in the Rai in Amsterdam during the Tibetan Freedom Concert. Thom and Jonny were performing some songs, including this 'Egyptian song'. You can hear the spectators talk Dutch
apparently this song is actually inspired by Dante Alighier's the Divine Comedy, and Dante's journey. Read the book, hear the lyrics..it does make sense then.
Well many of Radiohead's titles are absolutly meaningless. Like the name Radiohead. EMI thought it was easier to remember than On a Friday. Thom named this song after visiting a history museum's Ancient Egypt exibit whilst writing this song about a theory of Stephen Hawking's having to do with the cycles of universal energy. I don't personally understand it or this song, but it is still awesome, where the name comes from notwithstanding.
actually the lable company wanted them to change thier name so they picked a song/album title by the talking heads named Radio Head. Thats how they got their name, EMI
this song is major influenced by Charles Mingus' "Freedom" . Go check it out, you won't regret anything.

Well I knew that, but more important is that EMI chose it and it had no meaning to the band.

well it had some meaning to the band. They were the ones to chose it, but not as big of a meaning as what they would have wanted
