Aside from sponsorship badge this thing doesn't really have anything else Hyundai except the block on it. I suspect it has a Yamaha derived head. And if doesn't well, Hyundai/Kia is a part of a rare elite in internal combustion engine design. Having the capacity make a V rev up-to and beyond 9krpm.

now the course record after 2011 is 9.51.278 by Tajima, and he got the record with a fan belt snapped, water pump broken car. next year all pikes peak roads are said to be covered in asphalt, so dirt/tarmac record will stand unbroken by the "monster" forever. side note, 2011 had another new record for RWD at 11.33.734 by Toshiki Yoshioka, overwriting the record held by Rhys Millen at 12.09.397. I wonder how all that dirt affects traction? I've found around here anyway that dirt over pavement can be way more treacherous than just plain dirt can be.

It's too bad that with such great content and potential, this is a mediocre video at best. I love watching cars being driven to their potential, it's amazing what man and machine are capable of! There is no reason to speed up footage of a race car in an edit like this! I hope that the Redbull video team will re-watch "Climb Dance" from 1990 for inspiration.

The problem being with tarmac and gravel. Each year they are getting closer to the top with tarmac. And the hybrid tarmac gravel tire burns out on the tarmac by the time it gets to the gravel. And tires make much more of a difference on gravel. So they slow down massively when they hit the dirt

the monster suzuki still turned in the highest recourd for pikes peak in 2010. and i think that if they can hit 11 minutes the extra sec could be made up by rhys (weather premitting) his car has the right idea down but its got too much new stuff that they have never worked with befor. give him another 2 years will see the 10 minute recourd fall. if not by rhys the suzuki team will do it.

The times driven today can not be compared with times driven in the 1980´s. Today, most of the Pikes Peak is a nice tarmac road where you can easy be quick. Back in 1987 when Walter Röhrl made the record with the Audi S1 most of the Pikes Peak was still gravel...

@luedriver when you race pike's peak, it is a lot easier to run a small displacment, high revving, boosted car that can exchange new air for spent air very quickly and efficiently because of the extreme elevation that you are running at. by the time you reach the top, your car is usually running at about 60-70% the horsepower you started at.

its a shame that the rain came but it was not the main reason for not breaking 10 minutes. obviously there were a lot of technical problems which only means it was a half baked car. plus... focusing too much on the tarmac would only mean one thing...your car goes super slow on the dirt. you can see rhys millen losing traction on the dirt on most of the corners. which would then explain why he was behind by over a minute
