  • fucking youtube I swear...insanely great videos with inane moronic comments everywhere you click

  • He looks like a whit Obama, having sex with a drum kit.

  • get this man a respectable kit for crying out loud!

  • Nice vid...Thanks

  • 2 of my heroes on 1 show? I've died and gone to heaven.

  • Shoot the engineer ... man ... great playing of course, but the kit is so out of balance and sounds like somebody whacking a cardboard box.

  • I wonder what his ride is. Sounds good,

  • The only drummer who could conceivably swing with this much intensity + torque was Chick Webb.

  • coincidentally, this was the year the krupa movie came out. no one ever made a rich movie, though. nuff said

  • I once visited with Franca Mulligan, Gerry Mulligan's wife, in Connecticut. She proudly showed me their beautiful house, which had pictures of Gerry with everybody from Ben webster to Bill Clinton. There was a picture of him with Buddy. I asked, "How could he stand that terrible man?" Franca answered, "You didn't know Gerry, did you?" Gerry's rep was just as bad....

  • @terrryc Who was it who was the "terrible man" ,Gerry or Clinton? One balanced the budget and kept us out of war...They both would get blow jobs just like the rest of us i.e. , whenever given the opportunity..Grow up Terry

  • @satziebaby

Clinton balanced the budget because the Repubs took back the '94 Congress.

Know your facts before your espouse your idiocy.

  • @satziebaby

FYI, Clinton balanced the budget because the Repubs took back Congress in '94.

He kept us out of war while he simultaneously failed on eight specific occasions to ignore the CIA's intel which would have lead to Bin Laden's capture or death.

Know your facts and history before you espouse your idiocy.

    Putz.

  • TWO LEGENDS IN THE SAME VIDEO? HOLY MUTHAFU

  • Buddy was the MAN. All you had to do was ask him and he would tell ya too. Buddy was BaaaaDDDDDDDD!!

  • his set sounds like shit....i prefer travis barker

  • @4against1 Travis who?

  • @4against1 You're an idiot

  • @4against1 i prefer you stick your head in the toilet and then you'll find this travis Barker creep

  • @4against1 FUCK...Travis Barker...

  • @4against1 amatuer comment go to grammar school or kill yourself:)

  • I think both of these guys, Rich and Bruce, are overrated. I don't need any replies from those who disagree, I just don't think Bruce was funny and Buddy Rich was a prick.

  • @bilgewater79 Thats funny because someone told me the other day that they thought you were overrated and you were a prick. I AGREE.

  • @RJiminez51 I'm not offended by you Jose. You are unimaginative and ignorant. If you knew anything about these two assholes you would agree with my assessment.

  • That's called KILLING IT. Boom. Nothing more needs to be said. Mr. Rich was and remains THE best.

  • Buddy's rushing the time and overplays.

    WONDERFUL!!

  • Buddy's rushing the time...as usual.

    Forgivable.

  • i guess they hadnt dynamic mics yet :P fucked up at high SLPs of the snares

  • Harry Sweets Edison on tpt. Paul Smith--piano. Buddy looked haggard, had his 1st heart attack that year (1959)

  • Great stuff! That's an unusual technique he's using with the hi-hat. The left hand mutes and modulates without have to depress the pedal.

  • did you happen to notice he is playing on a well worn snare head, the cymbals are not polished and his tuning key is still on the last floor tom. i am willing to bet he didnt let anyone touch his kit in the early years or he would have kicked their ass in

  • you feel Buddy wanting to break out and do a thumping drum solo there lol

  • Does anyone know if this was before or after his first heart attack?

  • Nice to see Buddy in a small combo. Great find. Shit, on Lenny Bruce...

  • Thanks for this post!

That's 72 bars of drumming perfection.

  • If I were 1% as talented and skilled as Buddy Rich, I'd be the best drummer on the planet right now. The gap between Buddy and everyone else isn't even imaginable. A little hyperbole? Yes, but only a little.

  • buddy rich is to jazz as john bonham is to rock

  • 11,515 hits on this but some vid of a fat chick falling off of an improperly installed stripper pole has nearly a million??? WOW. Buddy was,is, and always will be the KING!!

  • All i can say is this,NEVER will there ever be another Buddy Rich.Take Cobham,Baker,Coliuata,Weckl,Williams,Elvin, and Blakey,Chambers.Throw in Thomas Lang!!! And Virgil Donati and guess what? You still cannot equal BUDDY FUCKIN RICH.He is possibly the most incredible musician that ever lived.HMMM I wonder if GOD himself could play better?

  • @Deagledrumzz Yes there's Buddy, and then there's everybody else. What an absolute dynamo !

  • 3:45 The guys in the back are like "hell yeah". :)

  • This is cookin' jazz. I would love to hear one group play this way. The modern thing is so boring.

  • YEAH!!!!!

  • Lenny Bruce + Buddy Rich? = who knew?

Not me. I thought Lenny was into drummers like Philly Jo Jones. Cool history.

    Top notch post.

  • Notice the drum sound, transition era. Mylar drumheads just introduced, he's tuned for the calf head feel/sound which is looser, getting a Mylar slap.

  • love his faces right after the solo..... dude is in the ZONE, even for Buddy

  • I believe in addition to "Sweets" Edison and Nat Pierce, that's John Simmons on bass....This is essentially the same group (with the addition of Sonny Criss on alto and Jimmy Rowles instead of Nat Pierce on piano) featured on the recently released, Harry Edison & Buddy Rich Quintet - Complete Studio Recordings.

    Fantastic!

  • nice find Bill

  • I too believe this is Buddy's greatest playing on film. One slip up at that tempo and it would fall apart. From the Fifties to the early Seventies, his speed and precision were beyond belief. This was the year of his first heart attack as I recall.Nearly gave me one watching this. For all those who still cast doubt, your deluded. This is by a mile the greatest human being to ever play a drum set.Just accept what is before your eyes. The man was touched by God!!!

  • OK, I'm gonna start playing my drums again. SO Inspiring!

  • man them toms sound so warm!

  • This is perhaps the finest drumming performance ever recorded.Nobody can play like this MASTER played,he is by FAAAR the most incredible drummer and perhaps musician ever. His talent has no boundaries,we miss you BUDDY.

  • brilliant. does anyone know of any other buddy videos on youtube that are a similar age to this or older?

  • he is better than travis, hes still a major influence on travis and always has been

  • @scopions84 I agree, man. And I bet you suck dick better than Travis. . . . just like a fucking faggot, don't you?

  • I love the faces he makes after his solo when the band comes back in.

THAT is real emotional content. Buddy probably had permanent goosebumps. I know I get the chills just watching it, imagine DOING this... all the while that little voice inside saying: "Geez, look at me go!"

  • Just listen to Buddy play the melody as he solos....

one of the most technically adept and musical drummers, ever!

  • So much for Buddy not understanding be-bop..just ask Dizzy if he could play it..

  • Buddy could play ANY thing . . . . . .

  • Lenny & Buddy=Bruce & Rich-Trailblazers =Freedom Riders =DESERVE ALOT OF RESPECT- DIG THE FACT THAT, Buddy always praised and mentioned The Black MEN that were Great from this era and they choose Him to, play with ...

  • It appears to be a younger and thinner Ray Brown on bass. But, I could be wrong!

  • Buddy Rich is the greatest ever!! The rest of this band is great, too! Mean piano and tremendous bass!! Good horn, too!! Who are the other guys??

  • Harry " Sweets " Edison on trumpet. Nat Pierce on piano.

  • Hey is Sussex! Thanks for the info!! I appreciate it.

  • Does anyone know who the guy on bass is?? Name of this song? Thanks

  • Not 100% sure, but I believe this tune is called "Blues in the Closet".

I could be wrong, but the last time I was wrong about anything was in about 1962 or so . . . . .

  • Thanks Mark.

  • The tune is called One Night Stand :)

  • Nope . . .the tune is called "Blues in the Closet".

As Tony Beretta used to say - "That's the name'a dat tune".

  • Lol, nice. Great comment Mark.

It's a great way to live, never being wrong!

  • @Beauxdeauxfinglok Cool, daddy o. Yeah, I checked my records and it WAS 1962, BUT - someone asked me what time it was and I told him and I gave him the wrong time. However, my watch had stopped without me knowing it, so really, not my fault. How can you blame a guy for that?

Man, that Bernard was such an animal ~

  • Amazing!!! Buddy rich really was from another world!! Hands down best drummer ever, and ever will be

  • what were u and your friend doing in the late 50s ,your already late for practice you diggy lo noob.....Drummers today only Think they can play a Drum no less Sticks ... Dont get us going unless your willin to do a showin... Boy

  • Damn! I thought I'd seen ALL the Lenny still existent on kine - I didn't even know he HAD a SHOW! I have a kine of him with Harry James from this period, but it's more about Harry than Buddy, so I haven't put it up...

  • This might be the finest drum work/solo of any drummer at anytime, Buddy was surely from another world. The UNDISPUTED CHAMP!!!!

  • Buddy Rich + youtube + people who care and can find some awsome old stuff = endless enjoyment. Thanks for taking the time to share this.

  • @gfryberger Totally agreed. Youtube is my time machine. :)
