My mom says the same exact thing about my skin when it's tan. But I heard from somewhere that the reason why vietnamese people (or even asian in general) like lighter skin has to do with your class in society. Your status can be seen from the color of your skin because the people who were rich did not have to work out in the sun as much and had lighter skin compared to the ones who were outside all day. I think that's why vietnamese people may think having light skin is prettier.
surely its not about the colour of your skin but your features.. how you look after and present yourself?
a person could see a dark/pale person in a negative light because they haven't met/seen a person of that colour who is physically attractive in their eyes.. but when/if they do, i think their idea would/might change........
i have blonde hair, very light skin and green eyes, i always get teased and mocked at school for having light skin , boys always say im ugly because im not tanned and it hurts so much, if anyone is teased or looked down on because of their not tanned or not white etc they should ignore it because your beautiful just the way you are :) someone someday will love you for exactly the way you are. x
omggg, i would kill for your skin color i can't believe your family would say that. Your so pretty, no matter what skin color, but i would love to have your skin color. People spend like months tanning to look like your skin. your lucky
I can really relate to this. Both my mom and dad have light skinned, basically everyone in my family has light skin.Im ussualy indoors all the time but when I go outside,no matter how long,I end up tanning.I can just walk outside and tan that easy.I always thought that light skin was pretty and I would get teased but now I do relieze that its just the way I am :) and Dark is beauitiful.
Thanks for the video dear. I am Chinese and I can completely relate to it. I think generally Asian cultures think lighter skin is prettier. I used to feel exactly the same way as you did growing up coz it was just how the general public wants you to think. But I am not bothered by it anymore. As another comment said that beauty comes from within and it is so true that when you are confident, you feel beautiful and that's when you are truly beautiful. We are all beautiful in the way God made us.
My mom is Chinese & my dad is Japanese, but I am really tan. I have pretty much the same skin color as you. I have no idea why I am so dark, since my ethnicity is primarily light-skinned. My parents, grandparents and even my sister constantly tease me and make fun of me for being so dark. It's really hurtful. But I've never had a problem with thinking that just because I'm dark, that I'm ugly. I am always compared to being Filipino & I get frustrated when I hear that. Dark-skinned IS beautiful.
light skin usually meant you were higher class, even in the hispanic culture it happens. lighter people are prettier more appreciated than darker or tanner people
@ADOradora188 yeah, that's true in my country (Mexico) if someone is dark skinned they call them Indios (Indigenous), which is ironic actully since the majority of us have a mixture of Indigenous and European blood... I guess it depends on how you feel more atractive, for instance when i'm tan i look really bad, and when i'm slightly pale i look sick lol so i guess medium skin tone is best for me~ lol
beauty comes down to how popular a certain characteristic is in a certain culture. for example, asians value pale skin, a really long and lean body, because generally asians have a more olive skin tone and are shorter. this is also true when it comes to weight; in places where food is in abundance (for example, north america), being thin is considered beautiful, whereas in a place where there is a lack of food (a developing country), being heavier is a sign of beauty.
i have pale skin and i cant tan i only burn yeah maybe i get the tinniest darker but hardly noticeable but i love my skin color. there's a couple time i think what if i was can but no matter what i look like i love me for me and i always will i don't want to change
I'm a ginger, and so I'm really pale. In the summer I burn, and freckle. I don't want to tan. It's not healthy. I wear a lot of sunscreen. If your naturally tan, and still wear suncreen, then I'm totally cool with it. I get a bit darker too (not that noticable). Everyone does. Then, you have the whole tanning salon, spray tan, laying out tanning group who do not realize that skin cancer will be coming. My aunt died of skin cancer, so I guess I know what can happen.
thank you for posting this vid, i think a lot of people don't realize that they were born to be a sertan way and they shouldn't try to change the way they look because no ones perfect and because people always will want what they can't have!! :D
I am african american, and many want lighter skin. I do not care if it is culture or not, skin color should not matter. I am medium brown, and can get dark in the summer, I embrace it, i get darker in the summer. The most important thing is to love yourself and do not let others vision of what is beautiful determine your beauty.
except of saying negative things, asian parent wants their kids to do what they want and never think about what their kids actually want.......sad but true cos we all asian experience it at some point....
It's so ironic because where I come from (Sweden), girls typically abuse bronzers and self-tanners until they look orange. Hmm.. maybe it's because we always want what we don't have? But I agree, for some reason white skinned people have become the role model or stereotype in the beauty community. Shouldn't be that way.
Being tan is not ugly! I'm Asian too, and I'm one of the lucky ones where my parents don't criticize me constantly (my aunts do, but that's irrelevant). They're kind of naturally tan. My dad was a farm boy, and my mom would always be out in the sun. My mom's more worried about getting skin cancer because she's gotten a lot of sun spots from avoiding sunscreen when she was younger. I have other issues with the Asian culture (weight/marriage/money/loyalty) but I've never had to deal with this one.
i'm sorry to say, but you are light skinned, its easy to speak from that side. i'm not african american, i'm indian. i'm dark skinned and a lot of guys don't see that as beautiful, and thus they hardly approach dark skinned girls.
Thanks for posting this! I experienced the same thing (I'm glad I'm not alone). Growing up, I was criticized for being a dark asian. I am always compared to my brother, who is fair-skinned. This video made me cry... Thanks again.
It's the concept of humans always wanting what they can't have....**sigh** I'm vietnamese too and I have a light/medium skin tone and I've always wanted tan skin because my friends say I'm too light but my mom says she likes my light skin and that I shouldnt tan. I realize that it shouldnt matter what your skin color is. I feel you Hanh.
thanks for this video, it really touched me. Ive always been told by elders that its not pretty that im dark and that i need to try to be lighter. this video made me cry. well yeah thanks.. <3
Lucky skin is always dark. My skin is so light that people like to stare at me and watch the blood flowing through my arteries. My skin is so damn light I can't swim in the ocean without some kid shouting to his parents, "CRIPES, DAD! Look at the size of that gawd damn jelly fish!"
I still think people use physical features to judge beauty. I don't put much on skin color. lol as I can hear the kitty playing with a toy while u were recording this.
I agree with everything you say.....everybody is special..
and I for 1 like to see the cat videos that you post. Dont stop posting them just cause a few ppl complain bout it.
I wish i was tan im hispanic(mexican) and i'm very very pale with green eyes and light brown hair people always make fun of me for not being tan.My whole family is tan and I'm the only pale one.People think that i dont go out but i do go out but i just dont tan.I'm learning to love my paleness lol I love your skin tone:)
i always get teased for being really pale. people ask me why i dont go outside and get sun (which living in oregon is hard unless you go to a tanning bed) and it's annoying cuz im scared that il get skin just cancer. i can get a small tan but i basically just freckle. it's frightening to really be in the sun cuz i have some really dark freckles. iv dealt with my friend having skin cancer and my grandpa. i have two people in my life that have died from cancer so i know its a real danger.
Hanh I just wish I could give you the biggest hug. My mom is Japanese and my dad is french but I tan easily, since ive been hiding from the sun im not very tan right now. I also have fair little freckles. Sometimes I dunno where I belong. And I try my hardest to hide from the sun but haha its hard being in California. But this video really spoke to me. Especially being asian, that comminuty wants to be fair skinned and I should just be happy whatever color I am. (:
i'm Indian nd hre in India de society always wnts galz to be fair. i'm of dark complexion and all my cousins r fair nd de whole of my joint family so dis comarison thing iz always dere.vich i really dun like, dey think dat u can be rejected for marriage if ur dark. my grandma iz always afta me ta use creams nd lotions vich can me fair nd sumtimes dese things make me feel dat i dun belong. i used ta feel very bad at first but afta seeing u nd many odr ppl hre..i can say that i was BORN THIS WAY :)
western culture is even worse. if you're very pale in the summer people look at you very strangely when you're wearing shorts or skirt or whatever.and that constant asking why am i so pale is really annoying mostly becouse i don't wanna lay in sunbeds or look like a giant orange.
people are stupid o.o
(and what's even worst, i'm not that pale to begin with!)
Great video! My grandma was Indian so my mum is quite tan in the summer but to us it has always been a good thing. Where I live people use tanning lotions but when we were talking about it at school my fillipino friend didn't understand why we used them and said we would be worshipped or something where she comes from since we have lighter skin. I found this disturbing. People of every colour are beautiful!
I am of indian origin and i am extremely fair. Here in India,if your fair,it means you're beautiful and if you're dark, you shall be ignored. My sister is on the darker side and people dont call her beautiful although she is.This is bad
I'm Canadian (but my parents are indian) and i moved to taiwan to teach here....people are always covering up here so they don't turn black....here, people call me "black" even though back home i would be called tanned....it sucks...but i dont care...i totally ignore their thinking and believe that everyone is beautiful....dark or light....
I am S.Asian. In my country being light means you are beautiful and being dark means you are ugly. When a baby is born, parents let out a sigh of relief if the baby is light skinned. I have seen dark people wear crazy light makeup to look light, and its crazy! I live in Canada, and I actually have this friend who thinks being dark is ugly! K so theres this girl who i think is soo beautiful, and my friend said "she is dark." Are you serious?
It's crazy that some people have that kinda low view.
So true, right on! I think you are gorgeous just the way you are! I think a tan suits you actually but you look fab lighter too, it doesn't matter to me but what matters is what you think, that's it.
nice topic.. in my country beeing lighter is considered beauty ..and for so long I hated my skin color ... cuz I'm not tan... I am a bit darker, and friends of my used to make fun of me because of that... or guys wont date me even if they liked me..just because...it was better having a white girlfriend ... being darker is a shame there. make me sad :( besos ..
I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND HOW YOU FEEL!!! Especially coming from your own parents makes it hurt like 10x more. Everyone should just realize beauty comes from within
This same thing is common in Mexican culture. I am Mexican and i love being tan. i even use self tanner because im really pale, but, for some reason being lighter skinned is considered to be more beautiful...i think its weird because i love being tan.
@doriosity Tanning actually isn't bad for skin, so long as you aren't baking yourself in the sun or in one of those tanning booths. Its just a natural thing people with lighter skin do. The reason the majority of Asian culture says white skin is better is because it shows you have money and you aren't a "poor person" working out in the fields or burning in the sun, opposed to the rich or better off folks who are inside behind a desk. Lighter skin showed working for a king basically.
Actually it's been scientifically proven that any time that your skin becomes darker, cells are being damaged.
Not to mention sun damage is accumulative, meaning every time you go outside without sun protection and your skin is damaged it doesn't completely heal it just adds up.
personally, I don't think skin lightness has anything to do with beauty, but I think asian ppl really like pale skin because our skin scars very easily (like dark spots after a pimple that sort of thing) and if you use whitening products, it will fade away these scars, and make your skin tone very even.
To be honest I've never really cared too much about skin color as long as its suiting in a natural way...though I think its safe to say that I feel women of color are stunning to look at.
I just hate when a naturally pale chick goes out and gets so tanned they look black, it just doesn't suit them. Bottom line is though is that no matter your skin color you can look stunning. Btw I personally hate the barbie look, either way keep doing what you do. Your beautiful the way you are.
@IrisKSapphire They never actually look *Black* they always have this weird fucking color that borders on orange black. Freaks me the hell out. *shudders* I totally agree with you, glad you feel this way.
@xXRawrJanisXx Honestly half of the time it makes them look sicky or like someone took an orange marker to them, though I have seen some white girls look good tanned, so it really depends.
my parents don't really care if i get darker or not but I remember visiting my grandma last year and she kept saying how pretty and light my skin looked and she asked if i bleached my skin -_-'' yeah thats definitely NEVER gonna happen!
We should be thankful that media is trying to branch out with what beauty is... It's not just Blake Livelys and Brooklyn Deckers anymore... Now we've got beauties such as Sophia Vergara, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Maggie Q... The process is slow, but I think we're getting there
I think being darker is healthier, the more you go in the sun, the more you produce melanin which helps to prevent burning and fading back to being pale. The sun is healthy I don't care what people say and having some colour makes you look healthy as opposed to being pale and like you haven't been outside in ages.
I'm probably the exact color of caramel, and most of my family is in the mid to light toned range with very yellow undertones which makes us look lighter, but i have a few cousins who are dark, maybe the color of milk chocolate, without the yellow undertones which makes them seem darker than they are, and I hear my aunts, their mothers, saying oh my daughter would be so much prettier if only she had a lighter complexion.
it's the same thing in the black community... Back in slave times, when you were light skinned, you were a house slave, living slightly more comfortable than the darker field slaves. Also being light skinned meant you were more beautiful, even now. Dark skinned black women have a harder time than light skinned or mid toned women. I know black men who won't date a dark skinned woman because of the way society looks at it. I think brown is beautiful, and I don't understand the stigma.
I think different people are attracted to different skin tones, but I think that has nothing to do with beauty. Beauty is on the inside. Your character and personality. What you look like on the outside may make you attractive, but it does not make you beautiful.
I've always had the opposite problem. Caucasians want to be tan, so I was teased mercilessly for being extremely pale. To top it off, my hair's really dark, making me look paler. I've finally come to embrace the pale, but skin color shouldn't have to do with beauty.
i'm vietnamese too and i'm really really really tanned. maybe 2-3x darker than you are here. my mom and my cousins always say how i'm too dark and how it's ugly too. my friends point it out too. but i can't help it because i've been this dark since i was itty bitty and went outside all the time. but the fact how i'm so tanned makes me who i am (:
i love that you did this video. i have been struggling with this since middle school. I am african american and i am always staying inside hiding from the sun., Scrubing my body with lemons to stay light skinned. I am so scared that people will think im ugly becuase i dont have extremly light skin. It hurts, i still struggle with this but this video made me feel so much better about myself and that beauty is in all colors, sizes, ethnicities. Thank you ;)
I am very touched and honored that you are speaking about a subject that most asian women are relating to. I think this thought of being more white or pale is more beautiful is totally wrong. I think all women should love their skin that they are in. Thank you so much for your contribution.
OMGGGG this is my lifeeee! i get in trouble for going out wihen its too sunny out cuz my parents want me to stay white. they say that i dont look like their child when im tan even though my dad is naturally brown. btw, both parents are filipino. they make me take glutathione pills and scrub my skin in glutathione soap to make my skin lighter! (Glutathione is a skin whitener btw in case u guys didnt catch that)
I am Viet. myself, I have sisters who are tan as you and in summer, they become more tan. As for me, I am pale and can not tan, when i do tan, i only get tinted but it eventually fades within a week. so, of course i get red and burn. when i was younger (HS days) i would spend hours at the pool trying to tan and wishing i was a shade or two darker. At one point, i had people tell me that I am so pale i glow in the dark. now, i embrace my paleness and protect myself from the sun proud to be pale
I'm mixed I'm chinese, filipino, norwegian, and spaniard. My skin color could range from SUPER white to extremely TAN depending on the season. Both sides of my family make it seem like the whiter you are the more beautiful you are... they emphasized that so much and it's just really ignorance. They don't see the beauty in other colors... there is just not one color in this world we are a vast majority of cultures and colors and each and everyone of us is beautiful. besides inside > outer beauty.
I'm black and Native American and I am pretty much the color of butterscotch. I had a friend who was Liberian and she was very dark. She thought that she wasn't beautiful and would never be liked by any guy besides other Africans because she was so dark. She wished that she was my color but I told her that her skin color will never change so she needs to love herself first because if she doesn't, no one else would love her.
This is so true! I'm really pale and sometimes I feel uncomfortable when someone tells me they envy that I'm pale or compare other's skin color to mine. I definitely don't think being too light is that great at all. Great topic, Hanh! <3
@SuperHillHill Same for me! but I do accually go outside normally. I just don't have naturally darker skin like my parents. Everyone always argues with me that i'm not Mexican and that i'm lying. Stupid, right? It always upsets me because sometimes people are just plain mean about it too. :\\
why is it that if ur not white your not beautiful or if u dont have a double eyelid. how did it all start out having bigger eyes is prettier than having smaller eyes. or having big lips is better than small lips. why isnt it the other way round? ive never seen anyone be racist to a white person. no offense to all the nice people in the world but some just put down others just because of their looks and race. its just so sad that our world has become such a racist place. everyone is beautiful.
actually, i just recently visited my grandma and she told me that i didn't look taiwanese or american because i was dark. well, i'm actually taiwanese-american and my mom and sister are light, while my dad's a bit darker. my grandma was so upset that i was dark that she actually sent me to get a facial to make my skin lighter. o_O;; i used to be a lot darker when i was younger, like you, but yeah, it's pretty tough being a darker-skinned asian.
i am the same hanh. My mum always seems to put me down, but it just makes me more determined to be a much more loving and supportive mum myself when i grow up.
It's interesting how skin color is so culturally subjective. I'm about as pale as you can get, which for white people in the US tends to be negative: so pale and pasty! I spent a lot of time trying to get darker in my teens (but I usually just burned instead). Then I moved to Japan, where people dress like it's winter even on 100F days to avoid tan, and when they point out how pale I am they mean it as a compliment. Made me feel better, but the pressure on both sides has got to stop, you know?
my mother and my sister get both really tan really fast and me and my father are just so pale and tan very slowly, my father doesn't even tan he only gets red... i always wished or sometimes still do wish for me to get tanner because i think it looks gorgeous but by accepting the fact that i'm just as beautiful the way i am made living with this difference so much easier! :) x thanks for being awesome hanh!
Over here in England, being tan is so unbelievably desired that girls will spend 4 days a week on a tan bed sometimes and put themselves at risk of skin cancer. Its disgusting. Being pale doesnt mean youre sickly or ugly, its something to be proud of. In this day and age not many pale people are left, so we should flaunt it.
The colour of your skin has nothing to do with whether you are beautiful or not, I can't believe that people would even consider this as a valid thing x x
my family was like too. my mom says the reason why Asians dont like dark skin is because it indicates if you are poor or not. if you were light skinned, you could tell that you are wealthy. but the poor people stayed outside all the time which is why they're dark, and people used to use skin color as indication of social class which is also linked to appearance.
Part 2 It's a historic fact that having lighter skin represent the wealth status of the family. Because it was thought that only poor people are dark since they are out on the field or out in general working. As for lighter skin have a better education so they work inside and less exposed to the sun or better yet they are so wealthy they never walk or work therefore even barely exposing their skin to the sun.
Part 1 I can relate to you on this topic becaus my family is the exact same way. I can prolly relate to you in a lot of levels when it comes to family and traditional thinking and culture. I just wanted to add to your explainiton of my having lighter skin is more appealing to Asian culture.
Hey hanh. I'm a naturally tan Asian as well. For me, I feel that it's not only about skin color, the eyes, nose and lips are also great indicators of beauty as defined by the media. For e.g., big round almond eyes, sharp pointy nose and full pouty lips are physically attractive. And once you have such features, you can be gorgeous regardless of whether you have a tan or not.
Same here. I'm dark for a Chinese and I always get negative comments from my own family. It's always them making fun on my skin colour because I'm the darkest out of all of them. It's unnecessary. Everybody else loves my skin colour an always tells me they wish they could get a tan my colour. I always felt that my family are the biggest critics.
OMG sooo true!! I'm half chinese so my mum's side all have pale skin and my uncle asked me one day if i went to the tanning salon =.= my mum also tells me to stop swimming cause I'm too dark, I'm half Filipino so i get dark really easily >3<
I don't think it's just cultural. I'm of Latin descent, but I'm really light. And it's always gotten mixed reactions. People think I'm too light to be Latin? It's odd. I don't mind being pale, it's my natural color, and I embrace it, regardless of opinion. Besides, who is anyone to tell me what color I should be? But in different time periods, pale was beautiful. It meant you were wealthy and stayed indoors. Now being tan means you're active in the sun. Views of beauty always change.
@dontbesoforLorn for reals! im as pale as my best friend whos white and my sister is darrrrk! but we have the same parents.. people are always like you sure your related? it does get annoying but whatever! haha. its sunny now and apparently im too pale.. well sorry i have to work all the time i cant be outside ! .
I'm really pale and I'm filipina. I did get tanned, but my skin naturally fades to my pale white color again... All Asians think having white skin means youre rich and beautiful. As to being dark means you work in the farms. My parents told me about this.
@idunnowat2use99 Same.! Im pale but not too pale. I get classified as being Caucasian rather than Asian cause I'm not "tan" enough. I never heard of the farm and rich thing before lol.
@idunnowat2use99 it was the same in europe for centuries, pale skin meant you are a rich, sophisticated lady (they always wore hats or were carrying umbrellas to protect themselves) unfortunately it was not to protect from damage but not to look like farmers and village girls working hard in the sun - now it has changed, we protect ourselves for our health, not to actually not look dark. I'm rocking tan right now, i love a sunkissed look during summer and i l prefer myself snow-white in winter:)
@natalusia371 A lot of people can pull off a tanned look, but I can't. I guess it depends on what kind of person you are. My mom prefers a tan, and i prefer being pale. It's really up to you :)
@idunnowat2use99 It's just a shame. Not targeting you in this post, but in many Asian countries, being dark means lower class (working in the sun). Many people here in the Philippines are taking vitamins, creams, injections just to have a whiter complexion. They get their nose done too to look more Caucasian. It's disappointing. :(
Here where i live people are like going crazy about tanning and stuff...and very pale and get made fun of that i look like a "vampire" cause im very pale but i really could careless cause i don't wanna be dark.
oh my gosh i know exactly what you're talking about. i'm a tan asian and i mean, my parents have never put me down or whatever for it (since you know, they gave birth to me and their gene pool is to blame) but i always get like negative comments from OTHER people. and it's just like stfu let me live my life.
I find this video so true. I'm very fair. my foundation color is sometimes lighter than the lightest color. Kids always call me a ghost and make fun of me for being pale. when i get a spray tan i feel so much more confident and so much happier with myself. It's funny how different generations and different races feel about things.
anyways, you're incredibly beautiful & i'm soo jealous of your tan! ha.
I would have like that my family would tell me NOT to tan, I did it too much, and the results are now showing, spoted skin, excesive melanine a real skin disorder, don't miss understand me, be in the sun but Don't go to the beach ONLY to get a tan, protect your skin always. I have lern my lesson.
i definitely understand with-family saying being too tanned is not pretty etc. because as a child, i've always been so easily tanned and my family just kept telling me i'm too tanned in a negative way!
my family honestly told me avoid going outside during recess because i get so tanned
I totally went through the same thing growing up. I'm Filipino and my parents and family would always make negative comments about how I had darker/ tan skin. They would always compare me to light skin Filipino actresses because thats how they see beauty in the philippines and most Asian cultures. It's not our fault and it isn't a bad thing to naturally tan easily! Its actually healthier because you wont get sunburned as easily. Remember that you're beautiful!
I'm Black & I'm dark skinned- the color of chocolate& people have always made fun of me for my skintone calling me horrible things and I feel like world wide my skin tone is potrayed as not beautiful & I agree w/ you when you say black people generally tend to want to be lighter. It's just sad and ignorant I personally love my skintone, I had to learn to love it though. And I think people of all skin tones are beautiful. I mean it's what makes us unique. =) And tanned or not ur beautiful Hanh=)
My parents are the opposite of you. So are my friends. My dad or mom will say you're not my child because there is no way you should be so light skinned. I like tanning, but I find self-tanners are a lot better for me. I love your dark skin. It's like are you redhead/blonde/brunette. I don't think it's that big of a deal. I like tanning because it looks pretty. Everyone I guess sort of just want what they don't have.
I'm tired of society thinking that skin color or hair color effects a person's beauty. Everyone is different and you are beautiful in your own way. Thumbs down if you hate the media now-a-days lol
im sicilian and im supposed to be dark but im actually relllly light. im the second lightest shade in most drugstore foundation. all my life my parents would make fun of me. during the summer they ridicule me for being so white they'd call me Casper and say i blend in with the white walls. id be ashamed to wear shorts in summer because my legs were so pale. now im 18 and im still as white as i was back then. idc though because while my parent look ten years older than they are i will look young.
But now that we live in a different country and society than our parents, we are able to think of whatever we want is beautiful. Just thought you should know, since I think it makes a difference to know why our parents believe white completions are more attractive. P.S. you are Beautiful! Tanned or not.
Tan is beautiful. I, being Filipino love being tanned. Though my parents never stressed trying to maintain a white completion, I found it weird that my mom would use whitening creams and soaps. So I discovered this way of thinking during my anthropology class and other random History checks of my own. Just wanted to let you know that it isn't really your parents fault that they think this way...but it is they way of their history and culture. (continues...)
They followed a caste system, so the lighter the skin, the more respect and accepted you were to the ruling Europeans. Since then, many Asian cultures continue to follow this way of thinking. Also due to the fact that slaves and helpers became naturally darker from doing labor outside, while the rich were pampered indoors. The American culture is completely different in the way of thinking. (continues..)
You have to understand why your parents think this way though. Once you realize the history of why lighter skin is considered beautiful in a lot of cultures you can then stop blaming them for what you may think to be ignorance---which is more of a cultural ignorance; and the reason is this: Back when the Europeans were conquering the world, they began to mix with the other cultures. (continues...)
I have dark skin and thank you for making this video, but no matter what, I'm always not going to feel as beautiful as a lighter skinned person. I don't know what it is. Hopefully me and aswell as others can get somewhere when we are cofortable in our own skin.
I know what you mean Hanh! :/ I'm viet too.. but very tan. When I was little until this day, my family still picks on me & tell me that my mom cheated on my dad with someone Filipino, Spanish or African-American... and how I look very different from my brother or my parents... All of my aunts always ask me why am I so dark? While they're trying to use every beauty product with skin- lighteners & whiteners out there.
i kind of have the opposite problem because i am half vietnamese and half white and i want to be tan. i use to always get made fun of cuz most the vietnamese ppl i lived around and my family are tanner so they would always call me white gurl and the white ppl would always say i looked hispanic. it really sucked i use to hate when i was younger but as i got older i just learned to accept my self for who i am and didnt let what other people thought of me bother me.
haha, my family is the same way about my hair as your family is about your skin. My hair isn't platinum blonde, just kinda muddy blonde, and my gramma always tells me to lighten my hair.
A lot of people really judge me/hate on me whatever, because I do have blonde hair, blue eyes and light skin.people call me bimbo, dumb blonde, and even Nazi! ha! some people are so ridiculous,i was born that way,and there is nothing i can do about it!
This video is SO needed! Especially for the beauty community! THank YOU so much! My family members and even GUYS tell me that Im ugly bc I am "dark skinned" and basically that "light girls are prettier." I'm not usually dark skinned, its summer and I flippin tan! lol! This is also a HUGE problem with indian girls who also are trying EVERYTHING to get lighter skin.
ya i watched an interview of eva longoria & she said that all her sisters are blonde & that she is dark & was thought of as the devil lol kind of odd..
also, whenever i go to mexico or spain the girls there always tell me how they wear long sleeves & avoid the sun because they want to be as white as possible
but i spend sooo much money on bronzer, self-tanners & vacations to get dark so it`s hilarious =)

You look beautiful in this video! I love your tan!!
crazynerdygirl 1 month ago
surely its not about the colour of your skin but your features.. how you look after and present yourself?
a person could see a dark/pale person in a negative light because they haven't met/seen a person of that colour who is physically attractive in their eyes.. but when/if they do, i think their idea would/might change........

i have blonde hair, very light skin and green eyes, i always get teased and mocked at school for having light skin , boys always say im ugly because im not tanned and it hurts so much, if anyone is teased or looked down on because of their not tanned or not white etc they should ignore it because your beautiful just the way you are :) someone someday will love you for exactly the way you are. x

ChinaPryncess 7 months ago
My mom is Chinese & my dad is Japanese, but I am really tan. I have pretty much the same skin color as you. I have no idea why I am so dark, since my ethnicity is primarily light-skinned. My parents, grandparents and even my sister constantly tease me and make fun of me for being so dark. It's really hurtful. But I've never had a problem with thinking that just because I'm dark, that I'm ugly. I am always compared to being Filipino & I get frustrated when I hear that. Dark-skinned IS beautiful.
aaykumiks 7 months ago 2
light skin usually meant you were higher class, even in the hispanic culture it happens. lighter people are prettier more appreciated than darker or tanner people
ADOradora188 8 months ago
@ADOradora188 yeah, that's true in my country (Mexico) if someone is dark skinned they call them Indios (Indigenous), which is ironic actully since the majority of us have a mixture of Indigenous and European blood... I guess it depends on how you feel more atractive, for instance when i'm tan i look really bad, and when i'm slightly pale i look sick lol so i guess medium skin tone is best for me~ lol
sUjU91 2 months ago
beauty comes down to how popular a certain characteristic is in a certain culture. for example, asians value pale skin, a really long and lean body, because generally asians have a more olive skin tone and are shorter. this is also true when it comes to weight; in places where food is in abundance (for example, north america), being thin is considered beautiful, whereas in a place where there is a lack of food (a developing country), being heavier is a sign of beauty.

I am african american, and many want lighter skin. I do not care if it is culture or not, skin color should not matter. I am medium brown, and can get dark in the summer, I embrace it, i get darker in the summer. The most important thing is to love yourself and do not let others vision of what is beautiful determine your beauty.

except of saying negative things, asian parent wants their kids to do what they want and never think about what their kids actually want.......sad but true cos we all asian experience it at some point....
strawberrylovii 8 months ago

I have other issues with the Asian culture (weight/marriage/money/loyalty) but I've never had to deal with this one.

igarcia165sister 8 months ago
plus tanning is just bad for skin anyway, and if you don't tan you don't get dark, hence it's okay?
doriosity 8 months ago
@doriosity Tanning actually isn't bad for skin, so long as you aren't baking yourself in the sun or in one of those tanning booths. Its just a natural thing people with lighter skin do. The reason the majority of Asian culture says white skin is better is because it shows you have money and you aren't a "poor person" working out in the fields or burning in the sun, opposed to the rich or better off folks who are inside behind a desk. Lighter skin showed working for a king basically.
xXRawrJanisXx 8 months ago
@xXRawrJanisXx
Actually it's been scientifically proven that any time that your skin becomes darker, cells are being damaged.
Not to mention sun damage is accumulative, meaning every time you go outside without sun protection and your skin is damaged it doesn't completely heal it just adds up.
doriosity 8 months ago
personally, I don't think skin lightness has anything to do with beauty, but I think asian ppl really like pale skin because our skin scars very easily (like dark spots after a pimple that sort of thing) and if you use whitening products, it will fade away these scars, and make your skin tone very even.
doriosity 8 months ago
i have really pale skin and i would never want other kind of skin color! I think everyone should be really proud with what they have! :)

We should be thankful that media is trying to branch out with what beauty is... It's not just Blake Livelys and Brooklyn Deckers anymore... Now we've got beauties such as Sophia Vergara, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Maggie Q... The process is slow, but I think we're getting there
sweetcandyzin 8 months ago
I think being darker is healthier, the more you go in the sun, the more you produce melanin which helps to prevent burning and fading back to being pale. The sun is healthy I don't care what people say and having some colour makes you look healthy as opposed to being pale and like you haven't been outside in ages.
odetteisforever 8 months ago
I'm probably the exact color of caramel, and most of my family is in the mid to light toned range with very yellow undertones which makes us look lighter, but i have a few cousins who are dark, maybe the color of milk chocolate, without the yellow undertones which makes them seem darker than they are, and I hear my aunts, their mothers, saying oh my daughter would be so much prettier if only she had a lighter complexion.
sweetcandyzin 8 months ago
it's the same thing in the black community...

Over here in England, being tan is so unbelievably desired that girls will spend 4 days a week on a tan bed sometimes and put themselves at risk of skin cancer. Its disgusting. Being pale doesnt mean youre sickly or ugly, its something to be proud of. In this day and age not many pale people are left, so we should flaunt it.

my family was like too. my mom says the reason why Asians dont like dark skin is because it indicates if you are poor or not. if you were light skinned, you could tell that you are wealthy. but the poor people stayed outside all the time which is why they're dark, and people used to use skin color as indication of social class which is also linked to appearance.
nikkicolex3 8 months ago 3
Part 3 So it's more appealing in Asian culture because historically skin color can depict the wealth of a person. ^^ sorry I'm love history ^^
Peakyb00 8 months ago

In conclusion all people are not 100% happy with their skin tone, including me lol

Hey hanh. I'm a naturally tan Asian as well. For me, I feel that it's not only about skin color, the eyes, nose and lips are also great indicators of beauty as defined by the media. For e.g., big round almond eyes, sharp pointy nose and full pouty lips are physically attractive. And once you have such features, you can be gorgeous regardless of whether you have a tan or not.
sweetdosage 8 months ago

My parents told me about this.
idunnowat2use99 8 months ago 68
@idunnowat2use99 Same.! Im pale but not too pale. I get classified as being Caucasian rather than Asian cause I'm not "tan" enough. I never heard of the farm and rich thing before lol.
WtfYourFaceHoe 8 months ago
@idunnowat2use99 it was the same in europe for centuries, pale skin meant you are a rich, sophisticated lady (they always wore hats or were carrying umbrellas to protect themselves) unfortunately it was not to protect from damage but not to look like farmers and village girls working hard in the sun - now it has changed, we protect ourselves for our health, not to actually not look dark. I'm rocking tan right now, i love a sunkissed look during summer and i l prefer myself snow-white in winter:)
natalusia371 8 months ago
@natalusia371 A lot of people can pull off a tanned look, but I can't. I guess it depends on what kind of person you are. My mom prefers a tan, and i prefer being pale. It's really up to you :)

@idunnowat2use99 It's just a shame. Not targeting you in this post, but in many Asian countries, being dark means lower class (working in the sun). Many people here in the Philippines are taking vitamins, creams, injections just to have a whiter complexion. They get their nose done too to look more Caucasian. It's disappointing. :(

Here where i live people are like going crazy about tanning and stuff...and very pale and get made fun of that i look like a "vampire" cause im very pale but i really could careless cause i don't wanna be dark.

oh my gosh i know exactly what you're talking about. i'm a tan asian and i mean, my parents have never put me down or whatever for it (since you know, they gave birth to me and their gene pool is to blame) but i always get like negative comments from OTHER people. and it's just like stfu let me live my life.
fashionedbyfate 8 months ago
I find this video so true. I'm very fair. my foundation color is sometimes lighter than the lightest color. Kids always call me a ghost and make fun of me for being pale. when i get a spray tan i feel so much more confident and so much happier with myself. It's funny how different generations and different races feel about things.
anyways, you're incredibly beautiful & i'm soo jealous of your tan! ha.
iitshannahyo 8 months ago
I would have like that my family would tell me NOT to tan, I did it too much, and the results are now showing, spoted skin, excesive melanine a real skin disorder, don't miss understand me, be in the sun but Don't go to the beach ONLY to get a tan, protect your skin always. I have lern my lesson.

Yep I'm Asian and I feel like in an Asian community parents would always say being tan isn't pretty. It's sad.

i definitely understand with-family saying being too tanned is not pretty etc. because as a child, i've always been so easily tanned and my family just kept telling me i'm too tanned in a negative way!
my family honestly told me avoid going outside during recess because i get so tanned
lilasianheart 8 months ago

=) And tanned or not ur beautiful Hanh=)
truebeautyforever 8 months ago
My parents are the opposite of you. So are my friends. My dad or mom will say you're not my child because there is no way you should be so light skinned. I like tanning, but I find self-tanners are a lot better for me. I love your dark skin. It's like are you redhead/blonde/brunette. I don't think it's that big of a deal. I like tanning because it looks pretty. Everyone I guess sort of just want what they don't have.

I'm fullly Asian, and I'm proud to be tan. Even though my mom has had comments about it, beauty is beauty not a skin color.
TheNicoleCheong 8 months ago

Tanned or not.
smellyannn 8 months ago
Tan is beautiful. I, being Filipino love being tanned. Though my parents never stressed trying to maintain a white completion, I found it weird that my mom would use whitening creams and soaps. So I discovered this way of thinking during my anthropology class and other random History checks of my own. Just wanted to let you know that it isn't really your parents fault that they think this way...but it is they way of their history and culture. (continues...)
smellyannn 8 months ago
They followed a caste system, so the lighter the skin, the more respect and accepted you were to the ruling Europeans. Since then, many Asian cultures continue to follow this way of thinking. Also due to the fact that slaves and helpers became naturally darker from doing labor outside, while the rich were pampered indoors. The American culture is completely different in the way of thinking. (continues..)
smellyannn 8 months ago

While they're trying to use every beauty product with skin- lighteners & whiteners out there.
lemonhoneyicedtea 8 months ago
what….? i LOVE your skin color/tone.
JSMNSHH 8 months ago
i kind of have the opposite problem because i am half vietnamese and half white and i want to be tan. i use to always get made fun of cuz most the vietnamese ppl i lived around and my family are tanner so they would always call me white gurl and the white ppl would always say i looked hispanic. it really sucked i use to hate when i was younger but as i got older i just learned to accept my self for who i am and didnt let what other people thought of me bother me.

haha, my family is the same way about my hair as your family is about your skin. My hair isn't platinum blonde, just kinda muddy blonde, and my gramma always tells me to lighten my hair.

A lot of people really judge me/hate on me whatever, because I do have blonde hair, blue eyes and light skin.people call me bimbo, dumb blonde, and even Nazi! ha! some people are so ridiculous,i was born that way,and there is nothing i can do about it!
bridgetxalexis 8 months ago
This video is SO needed! Especially for the beauty community! THank YOU so much! My family members and even GUYS tell me that Im ugly bc I am "dark skinned" and basically that "light girls are prettier." I'm not usually dark skinned, its summer and I flippin tan! lol! This is also a HUGE problem with indian girls who also are trying EVERYTHING to get lighter skin.
This is just plain ol sad.

ya i watched an interview of eva longoria & she said that all her sisters are blonde & that she is dark & was thought of as the devil lol kind of odd..
also, whenever i go to mexico or spain the girls there always tell me how they wear long sleeves & avoid the sun because they want to be as white as possible
but i spend sooo much money on bronzer, self-tanners & vacations to get dark so it`s hilarious =)
