The concept of it was the same, but halfway through the series it changed a lot from the manga. Then in FMA Brotherhood, it follows the story of the manga.

I'm sorry, but the whole thing about Greed is ridiculous. He's one of the coolest homunculus. I mean honestly the show is about a dedication to science and knowledge, and his ability is the only one that actually has any credibility and can be measured or accounted for scientifically.

Gluttony's mouth.

Pride's eye.

Envy's shapeshifting.

Wrath's temper.

Sloth's water body.

None of them really add up apart from Wrath's crazy temper, but then again that's not much of an ability.

Envy hates Ed because their father simply ran off and left him feeling alone while he went and got a new wife and kids. Gluttony eats everything, and the mark is on his tongue. Greed wants everything. Lust has the mark above her breasts. Pride is head of the nation. Sloth becomes water, which moves at its own pace. And Wrath wants to kill Izumi for a reason.

Envy is genderless and takes the form of an androgynous teenager. He PREFERS to be male. Though there is no solid proof that he is a definite male, like in the first anime, since his true form in the manga (and the Brotherhood anime) is a little six-legged lizard thing. Envy is a GUY! Proof? it even says in the anime that he was Homenhiem and Dante's SON who died from mecury poison.  Just like the others, he was brought back to life in the same gender he was in the past. Even towards the end of the series, he reveals his true form, which is male. In teh manga, it is unkown UNLESS you look at the pocket sized 'FMA secrets' guide, which refers to Envy as a HE. True he is voiced by a girl, but so are a lot of anime characters.
