This is very cool but looks very different from the Fado I experienced in my first and only visit to Lisboa in 2007. But then, all of the Fado I saw was in a couple of local small restaurants where there were folks who came in off the street to sing as well as those who worked at or owned the establishments. This is obviously the more professional circuit. In any case, I fell in love with the music while I was there. Amazing stuff.
hey hey hey...Bravo. Viva o fado, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Camané!
Well I can see this is a feisty discussion here. I am Portuguese and i deeply appreciate this "interpretation" provided by mr Saura about fado. As a portuguese I feel proud of it, and moreover I believe that there is a difference between being a fadista and singing fado. I believe that all you out there arguing that if you like it, you dont know what fado is, are the same that were saying thar Mariza, Ana Moura, Cristina Branco weren't fadistas, and they didnt know what fado was!!!!stop it
fado.more than a style is a feeling, something deep inside on minds and hearts of portuguese people,we cant forget this not a documental.its a movie and as viewrs we should try to discover why this film maker have choosed to this remarkble singers instead of asking, but why he have put this foreigner singer if fado have better xporsers?on my point of view he have tryed to show that fado even been so portuguse have also been adopted by the world as a new style path and that show us how is evolving
but take this into consideration-where does fado come from? what are fado`s true origins? so please before trying to define what is and what is not fado lets do our research!!!!!!!!!! another thing fado hasn`t got a definition or style!!!!!!! to make it clearer i give you two great fado singers Amalia Rodrigues (RIP) and Mariza. my point being two wonderful singers and two very opposite interpretations of fado.

The film itself spends too much time showing us the "Fado Hip-Hop", "Fado Flamenco" and so on. Compiling as many or more non-Portuguese singers as it did local talent. The few minutes spent in a homage to the one person that will always be THE SOUL OF FADO - AMALIA RODRIGUES, was wasted in a short video!
I have to say it does look pretty horrible. I heard very little in this clip that actually bore more than the slightest resemblance to fado. Judging from the looks of this clip, if this movie was meant to be in any way representative of fado music, it failed miserably. I won't be running out to see it.
Before you disagree, note this - just because you like the music, doesn't make it fado.
Lura sings Cabo Verdian Morna, Miguel Poveda is a Flamenco singer, and Caetano Veloso is a Brazilian Bossa Nova singer. It is true that they may cross over, but their styles are so unmistakeably influenced by their primary musical roots that they really cannot give a good representation of an authentic fado.
In fact, when they give the list of artists at the end, there are only a few among them who truly are either fadistas or fado musicians. And finally, even among these names a number of them perform in a contemporary pop music style that really only has the mildest hint of a fado sound left in it- maybe the guitar, maybe the lyrics, maybe something in the voice, maybe just the nationaility of the performer.

Even among these names, there are a number of them who perform in a contemporary pop style which has only the barest hint of what may be recognized as fado still left in it- maybe the guitar, maybe the lyrics, maybe a little something in the voice, or maybe just the nationality of the singer.

So, whether the music is to your taste or not, don't believe the label. Just because they say it's fado, this doesn't make it so.
Please take a look at this collection of videos, to get somne idea of the difference:
Mencado's Fado Music Video Collection
P.S. - Incidentally, I am, in fact, a fan of both Flamenco and Cabo Verdian Morna. I have created some playlists for these, as well.
