@metallicabdb I dunno, but I'm straight and his voice makes me hard and sexually confused. Amazing voice and beautiful lyrics (If you love something, give it away)...I love Bright Eyes.
@metallicabdb straight i THINK, never thought about it but im sure he is, most his songs are about love and someone breaking his heart lol, and its usually involving womens names, and the feel of the song is its towards women

I think people often confuse the brutal honesty of Connor Oberst with angst, i saw him play this at the royal albert hall and had goosebumps, it was amazing <3
@MyStevie1990 Come on man. Every angsty 7th grader listens to Conor Oberst and thinks they are deep and poetic for doing so. The fact that you appreciate his music doesn't make you very impressive.
@mcmexican123 I never said it made me impressive man.. And in no way do i think im 'deep and poetic' (as you put it) for listening to his songs, Their not very well knowin over here in Ireland, Theres also a difference between listening to it and understanding it, He's a fuckin poet and i <3 him
this song is so fucking good. although, i kinda think it'd be better if it said "Im leaving but i dont know how soon, yeah im leaving but i dont know where to" (as in a death reference hah...instead of just saying idk how soon twice)

Saw this at Lollapalooza, a couple rows from the front. I nearly cried. Almost everyone around me was either crying or kissing. No other group I've ever seen live has affected their audience so- it's remarkable, like he's got no filter on his emotion when he writes. He reminds me of sufjan stevens or some of art garfunkel's stuff that way.
@SeanTMonty I saw him play this last night and he said the same thing! and when he said "ones pointing his tree branch at me" he was pointing his guitar like a gun!
My first love introduced me to Bright Eyes after ignoring me completely for over a year. He stayed the noght with me and sang this song to me until I fell asleep, then started ignoring me again. I miss/love him so much.
Of course, he is influenced by Dylan. I think nowadays every folk/rock musician is influenced by him anyway. But I don't think that this matters much. Better think about what he's trying to tell you with this song instead of drawing conclusions about his musical origin.

"[Of course], I put a lot of myself into what I do. But it's like, being an author you have to, free yourself to use symbolism and allegory to reach your goal and, and a part of that is, compassion, empathy for other people and their.. and their situations. Some of what I sing comes from other people's experiences as well as my own. It..It shouldn't matter, the message is intended to be universal."
@wigginftw it was something else for the entire family to sit at dinner and listen to brighteyes.. all ages present and not one complaint...or comment towards or against the music chosen..just family enjoying.. living at that moment....
@shootingstar022 there are 2 sides to this river, a large hill on the right and bones on the left. many don't make it up that hill so we climb alone in hopes for something better
@OakRidgePunk777 I think, and I'm probably wrong, but he's saying that He's wasting his time and avoiding doing what he should. Which is reconnect with this someone who he let go, because he's convinced himself that it's good for him to be away from her, even though he misses them like hell. And I may be wrong, but that's my interpretation...
This song is very complex and up to each individual for their own interpretation, but if I could sum it up in four words it would be "Make Love, Not War."
You know what my favorite thing about Bright Eyes is? Every single song paints a picture in my head with the words muttered from Conor's lips. All music should do that. Not enough does. That's why I love Bright Eyes.
a good woman will pick you apart. a box full of suggestions for your possible heart. but you may be offended, and you may be afraid. but don't walk away, don't walk away.
conor oberst is such an amazing musician. i've probably listened to this song a million times, and it's still just as good as the first time. if not better.
I agree with others here..this song is a lot more than a simple love song. If you really listen to the lyrics they're very complex...love is a very small part of this song.
Although some people are being rather rude about it, I have to admit I never thought about this as a "love" song until someone else brought that interpretation up. It always felt more about war and freedom and understanding the world. Not really just about a breakup. Still, the writer determines the words, the reader (or listener in this case) determines the meaning.
I think my boyfriend and I are close to ending our two year relationship. I've always loved this song and was looking for an official music video and found this. Somehow, it's consoling to see that Bright Eyes, this song in particular, has gotten others through breakups as well.
I've never been in a real relationship, but I know what it is to leave. In the middle of the last school year I moved. I left unfinished things behind and it killed me. I'm moving again in less than four months, and I know what to do. I'm in that awkward, miserable disconnecting period where I am slowly pulling away. Although it hurts, it's going to help in the long run. These tears and sleepless nights will be worth it.
its good to know when you should just walk away. But we get to caught up in the gratutitous conflict.I'd like to say Iv'e walked from situations instead of argueing but we are all victims of the dumb.
@Charliemajor Are you serious man? Songs are up for individual interpretation and anyone can see whatever they want in them...sorry not all of us can be so pretentious. The lyrical genius you speak of as far as Connor goes is correct...
I understand that, believe me I do. It just kills me all the naive teenagers on here screaming about ex girlfriends when there is so much more in this song. You can make of this song anything you want, I was merely stating that it really aggravates me. I want people to see the beauty in this song, not relate it back to the only girlfriend they've ever had - it's not about the first glimpse of love, it's so much more than that.
@modestgobble His name is Conor (one "n"). Sorry, I'm just one of those asses who corrects other people when they misspell someone's name. Let's just call it OCD even though it's not...
hate all the fucking bull about splitting up with girlfriends.
Beautiful song but it epitomises feelings that aren't related to love. There is more to it than that.
Perhaps your interpretation is down to your 14 year old girlfriend but it's nothing to do with that. God I hate comments like that on viceos like this, it takes away so much of the lyrical genius of Oberst.
Not saying it's not about love at all, just saying it's not about all these teenage kids who split up with their first girlfriend and 'misses them so bad'. There's no story behind it, there's no feeling. It's a fucking twilight generation and these kids have missed the point.
It sure as hell is to do with love but it's to do with a lot more than Oberst's 14 year old crush. You can hear that from the song and you're crazy as hell if you think it is.
@Charliemajor I don't see what's wrong with people thinking this song is about something they relate to. If this makes someone who is sad feel better, why is that ever bad? I don't think you should be so ellitist - just let people enjoy music that is here for everyone to listen to not just the people who "get" it.
@ciaracustard If it's open to interpretation then you have now concept on how people can decide how these words build their reality. Your asleep man, wake up and see more than yourself or anything that you believe in. If there are no questions there are no answers. Live!
@Royals89 I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that but I'll agree to the last word. By any means, how people respond to Conor's music, how people live and under what assumptions are their own decisions unless they harm other people. All this is somewhat unimportant in the context of a youtube comments section and I wish not to fill up the space on this wonderous video any further. Cherrio, Ciara.
souls can only ache for so long before numbness takes over. then you listen to bright eyes and remember what its like to hurt and even smile for real. i cant wait to become numb again.
Oh Conor Oberst my friend, I'm still free, and I'm runnin away. And I know yall are comin for me. Haha, I love your music. I hope the devils of fame let you walk away. God bless you.
my ex put this on a cd and i had it in my car for like a week later i totaled my car and i didnt listen to the cd tell about a week ago after we broke up and the first time i heard it i dont think ive ever cried harder in my life and my parents are getting a divorce
Me and my partner gave our all in an attempt to buy tickets for when Bright Eyes came to a show that was fairly close. However, we didn't get tickets. Instead, I find myself looking over 'touted' tickets on ebay pricing us out of the market. How can people do this to somebody?
I just had the worst night of my life and I can't explain how sad this song makes me feel. I broke up with my girlfriend a month and some days ago, and I've never been more depressed in my life. This song has helped me and hurt me more than anything. It helps me get through the sadness but brings up many memories of us. I don't know how to feel anymore. I've lost so much lately. My life is falling apart. God damn it, I hate life. I need help. This seems to be as close as I can get to help.
@314fox413 just remember that life will always get better. Sometimes when things get tough it's hard to see that dawn is coming, but never forget that night can't last forever. If leaving her has really hurt you this badly then you must have really been happy with her. Keep living and striving so that someday somehow you can have that feeling again.
"I dreamed you were carried away on the crest of a wave" I fucking love this man. He's coming to my city in April and I've pre-ordered my ticket already. I really, really can't wait. I hope he plays this song but I'm sure he won't.

its good to know when you should just walk away.

@modestgobble
And THIS is why Oberst is so underrated.
Charliemajor 11 months ago 5
@modestgobble His name is Conor (one "n"). Sorry, I'm just one of those asses who corrects other people when they misspell someone's name. Let's just call it OCD even though it's not...

hate all the fucking bull about splitting up with girlfriends.
Beautiful song but it epitomises feelings that aren't related to love. There is more to it than that.
Perhaps your interpretation is down to your 14 year old girlfriend but it's nothing to do with that. God I hate comments like that on viceos like this, it takes away so much of the lyrical genius of Oberst.
Charliemajor 1 year ago
@Charliemajor So your saying love isnt a powerful feeling every human being feels?
Love is the biggest emotion one has. very powerful.
noheros3 11 months ago 4
@nohero
Charliemajor 11 months ago
@Charliemajor I don't see what's wrong with people thinking this song is about something they relate to. If this makes someone who is sad feel better, why is that ever bad? I don't think you should be so ellitist - just let people enjoy music that is here for everyone to listen to not just the people who "get" it.
ciaracustard 8 months ago 2
@ciaracustard If it's open to interpretation then you have now concept on how people can decide how these words build their reality. Your asleep man, wake up and see more than yourself or anything that you believe in. If there are no questions there are no answers. Live!
Royals89 8 months ago
@Royals89 I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that but I'll agree to the last word. By any means, how people respond to Conor's music, how people live and under what assumptions are their own decisions unless they harm other people. All this is somewhat unimportant in the context of a youtube comments section and I wish not to fill up the space on this wonderous video any further. Cherrio, Ciara.

I wonder if like Shakespeare, Conor Oberst will have scholors dedicated to his lyrics?

Me and my partner gave our all in an attempt to buy tickets for when Bright Eyes came to a show that was fairly close. However, we didn't get tickets. Instead, I find myself looking over 'touted' tickets on ebay pricing us out of the market. How can people do this to somebody?
DJSUNDAY8PM 1 year ago
I just had the worst night of my life and I can't explain how sad this song makes me feel. I broke up with my girlfriend a month and some days ago, and I've never been more depressed in my life. This song has helped me and hurt me more than anything. It helps me get through the sadness but brings up many memories of us. I don't know how to feel anymore. I've lost so much lately. My life is falling apart. God damn it, I hate life. I need help. This seems to be as close as I can get to help.
314fox413 1 year ago
@314fox413 just remember that life will always get better. Sometimes when things get tough it's hard to see that dawn is coming, but never forget that night can't last forever. If leaving her has really hurt you this badly then you must have really been happy with her. Keep living and striving so that someday somehow you can have that feeling again.

"I dreamed you were carried away on the crest of a wave" I fucking love this man. He's coming to my city in April and I've pre-ordered my ticket already. I really, really can't wait. I hope he plays this song but I'm sure he won't.
