  • Someone told me they didn't like Bright Eyes. I walked away.

  • Just stay in, when it's lookin' this way.

  • heteroflexable?

  • something almost as good

    watch?v=amW31dXcEBw

  • if you love something, give it away

  • I love this band, so don't get e wrong when I ask this: what is the sexual orientation of the frontman? (not that I even really care that much, its just out of curiousity and I mean no disrespect)

  • @metallicabdb *me

  • @metallicabdb I dunno, but I'm straight and his voice makes me hard and sexually confused. Amazing voice and beautiful lyrics (If you love something, give it away)...I love Bright Eyes.

  • @metallicabdb straight i THINK, never thought about it but im sure he is, most his songs are about love and someone breaking his heart lol, and its usually involving womens names, and the feel of the song is its towards women

  • @metallicabdb

I'm pretty sure he's straight. I've never heard otherwise, other than pointless insults.

  • I know Im leaving but I dont know where to

  • My favorite lines: "I found a liquid cure for my landlocked blues... it will pass away like a slow parade, that's leavin', but I don't know how soon."

  • @professormacdeezy i love that bit too, cant really think what is meant by it will pass away like a slow parade, that's leavin', tho, care to explain?

  • The world has me dizzy again...

  • Well apparently... I gotta learn how to play the trumpet part... *smack smack* ... kinda looking forward to that...

  • bright eyes is the only band that can make me get teary.

  • the part where he says "come here" has a lot emotion, it makes me love this song soooo much.

  • me gusta

  • "We made love on the living room floor

With the noise in the background of a televised war

And in the deafening pleasure I thought I heard someone say

If we walk away, theyll walk away"

That represents a lot about our generation I think.

  • @ibetmycaddywill2 whose?

  • I think people often confuse the brutal honesty of Connor Oberst with angst, i saw him play this at the royal albert hall and had goosebumps, it was amazing <3

  • 12 people have Land Locked Reds

  • I had a never bad night mare, and Connor Oberst occupied half of it.

  • Comment removed

  • @MyStevie1990 Come on man. Every angsty 7th grader listens to Conor Oberst and thinks they are deep and poetic for doing so. The fact that you appreciate his music doesn't make you very impressive.

  • @mcmexican123 I never said it made me impressive man.. And in no way do i think im 'deep and poetic' (as you put it) for listening to his songs, Their not very well knowin over here in Ireland, Theres also a difference between listening to it and understanding it, He's a fuckin poet and i <3 him

  • @MyStevie1990 You totally were.

  • I can say, in all honesty, Conor Oberst has changed me. (In a good way c: )

  • love this part 0:00 - 5:48 !

  • I've heard he changes the lyrics like that because the crowd singing along can make him mess up.

  • I really wish these guys didnt split..suck that i never got to see them live.

  • @PRESSbUPa They didn't split up! And I just saw them live in May. I'm sure you'll get the chance.

  • It actually made me cry real tears. I feel so real after listening to this.

  • this song is so fucking good. although, i kinda think it'd be better if it said "Im leaving but i dont know how soon, yeah im leaving but i dont know where to" (as in a death reference hah...instead of just saying idk how soon twice)

  • 12 people don't understand reality.

    or good music.

  • truthfully though, war is the only place for the youth to die honorable deaths. these work camps, these relationships.. they aren't honest..

  • AND HE SHOT ME DEAD

  • so i put my hands up and say enough is enough(: ♥

  • This song is genius. The "taps" trumpet insert just makes it.

  • its like 7 years later and this song still like paralyzes me.

  • probably the only artist that i enjoy reading his lyrics as much as listening to his songs

  • Man, he cuts deep. One of the great lyricists of our generation

  • @trinchy100 What they mean is rap can be poetry and so can bright eyes, any art form has the potential to be amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • @trinchy100 its all amazing. =music.

  • lf you walk away, l'll walk away.

  • college humor

  • 11 people need to play guns with the kids in the street.

  • i agree

  • if you love something give it away

  • Saw this at Lollapalooza, a couple rows from the front. I nearly cried. Almost everyone around me was either crying or kissing. No other group I've ever seen live has affected their audience so- it's remarkable, like he's got no filter on his emotion when he writes. He reminds me of sufjan stevens or some of art garfunkel's stuff that way.

  • @deathbytango if you like the pure emotion of his music then you'd love john frusciante.

  • Connor and Emmylou are just ♥

  • i just saw him in vermont and at the part were he says "And theres kids playing guns in the street

And ones pointing his tree branch at me

So I put my hands up I say enough is enough,

If you walk away, Ill walk away

And he shot me dead" he said and the little fucker shot me dead, it was hilarious

  • @SeanTMonty ya he always does that live lololol

  • @SeanTMonty he didi the same at the show he played in new york!

  • If anyone has seen him play live, the way he changes the lyrics subtley makes then seem more spontaneous and from the heart.

  • @SeanTMonty he always does that live. he did it in ottawa when i saw him

  • @SeanTMonty I saw him play this last night and he said the same thing! and when he said "ones pointing his tree branch at me" he was pointing his guitar like a gun!

  • @SeanTMonty lol he did that in Santa Barbara as well.

  • I watched this at lolla and cried, watching it now and crying.

  • Just heard this on the live Lollapalooza feed...and I just fucking cried.

  • Wow! ...such great lyrics!!

  • i would not survive without bright eyes.

  • talk about a beautiful song..

  • @bethlarson13 It's Emmylou Harris. :)

  • Saw them last night, absolutely amazing. :) I shook Connor's hand. :) One of the best concerts I've been to.

  • anyone know the girls name that sings background?

  • this song is so so perfect.

  • Night*

  • My first love introduced me to Bright Eyes after ignoring me completely for over a year. He stayed the noght with me and sang this song to me until I fell asleep, then started ignoring me again. I miss/love him so much.

  • @Makavelibombfirst even if he hasn't, it's called imagination you ignorant prick.

  • i don't care how many interpretations this song may have, this song is the perfect break up song.

  • Of course, he is influenced by Dylan. I think nowadays every folk/rock musician is influenced by him anyway. But I don't think that this matters much. Better think about what he's trying to tell you with this song instead of drawing conclusions about his musical origin.

  • Relationships that start in the spring then end in the summer a few years later are the worst.

  • i saw bright eyes a few days ago in columbus. it was incredible. i just wish they would have played this song. ]:

  • Can't you just smell the Bob Dylan influence?

  • "[Of course], I put a lot of myself into what I do. But it's like, being an author you have to, free yourself to use symbolism and allegory to reach your goal and, and a part of that is, compassion, empathy for other people and their.. and their situations. Some of what I sing comes from other people's experiences as well as my own. It..It shouldn't matter, the message is intended to be universal."

    -Conor Oberst

  • @wigginftw it was something else for the entire family to sit at dinner and listen to brighteyes.. all ages present and not one complaint...or comment towards or against the music chosen..just family enjoying.. living at that moment....

  • I love and hate how this song forces me to be honest with myself, if that makes any sense at all.

  • @shootingstar022 makes so much sense... i feel you

  • @shootingstar022 Makes perfect sense. oh and...your a shooting star and im a falling star...heh :)

  • @shootingstar022 there are 2 sides to this river, a large hill on the right and bones on the left. many don't make it up that hill so we climb alone in hopes for something better

  • no one will ever understand the amazing feelings i get listening to this!

  • Even in Canada, where there is lakes that seem like Oceans everywhere, you get Land locked blues..

  • I hear a lot of people quote the last line but can someone explain this whole part to me. It makes no sense in my head.

" keep drinking the ink from my pen

And Im balancing history books up on my head

But it all boils down to one quotable phrase

If you love something, give it away"

  • @OakRidgePunk777 I think that he writes his life away through these songs he creates and finds that knowing everything isnt really what he wanted.

Well that's what I think but I dont know. What do you read between the lines?

  • @OakRidgePunk777 I think, and I'm probably wrong, but he's saying that He's wasting his time and avoiding doing what he should. Which is reconnect with this someone who he let go, because he's convinced himself that it's good for him to be away from her, even though he misses them like hell. And I may be wrong, but that's my interpretation...

  • @OakRidgePunk777 the way i read it, it's about love being selfless, and all giving.

  • I remember my best friend Alex sang this too me <3

One of my favortie memories ever...

I miss him so much, love you Alex!

  • 6 dislikes?? Idiots.. Such a captivating song, beautiful.

  • Mmmm♥

  • my question is how do u get conor oberst to come to your halloween party?

  • @osidep62 Have lots of boose.....LOTS of boose

  • @osidep62 chloroform. windowless van. I know a guy. should cost you about $1200 total.

  • Contender for my favorite song of all time.

  • Best song ever.

  • This song is very complex and up to each individual for their own interpretation, but if I could sum it up in four words it would be "Make Love, Not War."

  • You know what my favorite thing about Bright Eyes is? Every single song paints a picture in my head with the words muttered from Conor's lips. All music should do that. Not enough does. That's why I love Bright Eyes.

  • @Simplicityminor69 I hear you. It's like all the songs transport you to another world within yourself where there's only you and this music!

  • the other version is so much better, she ruins this... it's under "one foot in front of the other

  • a good woman will pick you apart. a box full of suggestions for your possible heart. but you may be offended, and you may be afraid. but don't walk away, don't walk away.

conor oberst is such an amazing musician. i've probably listened to this song a million times, and it's still just as good as the first time. if not better.

  • I agree with others here..this song is a lot more than a simple love song. If you really listen to the lyrics they're very complex...love is a very small part of this song.

  • Can someone tell me what this song is about in detail? Im using this song for an english project.

  • @coolguy1581 i did my english poetry project on conor (:

  • Although some people are being rather rude about it, I have to admit I never thought about this as a "love" song until someone else brought that interpretation up. It always felt more about war and freedom and understanding the world. Not really just about a breakup. Still, the writer determines the words, the reader (or listener in this case) determines the meaning.

  • amazing...

  • Songs about moving on in life and not wanting to see an ex, whether that be a lover or a family member.

  • conor oberst is a musical god.

  • increadibly beautiful song. ive loved bright eyes since i discovered it freshman year, conor oberst is the only voice that ill never get tired of

  • which album is this? I like it!

  • @Benjii228 I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.

  • @thewickedrobot thanks, I shall download that now

  • @Benjii228 go buy it...

  • @Benjii228 its on "i'm wide awake, its morning" :)

  • I find it amazing how music speaks to everyone, this songs powerful.

  • i find it amazing how music speaks to everyone, this songs powerful

  • I think my boyfriend and I are close to ending our two year relationship. I've always loved this song and was looking for an official music video and found this. Somehow, it's consoling to see that Bright Eyes, this song in particular, has gotten others through breakups as well.

  • I think I'm gonna have to get myself a girlfriend so she can screw me up when we separate. This is rectangular music for octangular minds.

  • bright eyes has gotten me through so many breakups. so here i am again.

    conor oberst is my savior.

  • April 2nd in KC, MO can't be here soon enough. The venue looks legendary for a Bright Eyes concert.

  • I've never been in a real relationship, but I know what it is to leave. In the middle of the last school year I moved. I left unfinished things behind and it killed me. I'm moving again in less than four months, and I know what to do. I'm in that awkward, miserable disconnecting period where I am slowly pulling away. Although it hurts, it's going to help in the long run. These tears and sleepless nights will be worth it.

  • Amazing song. I love the natural feel- especially with the harmonics. Beautiful.

  • in tears

  • when i started listenening to Conor my mom thought I was going through some emotional problems when the truth was.......I WAS JUST A POT HEAD HAHA

  • the background reminds me of the scene in Garden State when the guy is against the wallflower-paper

  • Fuck.

  • Beautiful <3

  • so much allusion to war in this song

  • my favorite lyric is "freedom's a joke i'm just takin a shit." it's conor's way of saying he'd shit on his freedom for love.

  • @ConstantMatt i thought it was "freedoms a joke we're just taking the piss??"

  • gets me everytime..

  • no. words. can. describe.

  • its good to know when you should just walk away. But we get to caught up in the gratutitous conflict.I'd like to say Iv'e walked from situations instead of argueing but we are all victims of the dumb.

  • @Charliemajor Are you serious man? Songs are up for individual interpretation and anyone can see whatever they want in them...sorry not all of us can be so pretentious. The lyrical genius you speak of as far as Connor goes is correct...

  • @modestgobble

I understand that, believe me I do. It just kills me all the naive teenagers on here screaming about ex girlfriends when there is so much more in this song. You can make of this song anything you want, I was merely stating that it really aggravates me. I want people to see the beauty in this song, not relate it back to the only girlfriend they've ever had - it's not about the first glimpse of love, it's so much more than that.

And THIS is why Oberst is so underrated.

  • @modestgobble His name is Conor (one "n"). Sorry, I'm just one of those asses who corrects other people when they misspell someone's name. Let's just call it OCD even though it's not...

  • hate all the fucking bull about splitting up with girlfriends.

Beautiful song but it epitomises feelings that aren't related to love. There is more to it than that.

Perhaps your interpretation is down to your 14 year old girlfriend but it's nothing to do with that. God I hate comments like that on viceos like this, it takes away so much of the lyrical genius of Oberst.

  • @Charliemajor So your saying love isnt a powerful feeling every human being feels?

Love is the biggest emotion one has. very powerful.

  • @nohero

Not saying it's not about love at all, just saying it's not about all these teenage kids who split up with their first girlfriend and 'misses them so bad'. There's no story behind it, there's no feeling. It's a fucking twilight generation and these kids have missed the point.

It sure as hell is to do with love but it's to do with a lot more than Oberst's 14 year old crush. You can hear that from the song and you're crazy as hell if you think it is.

  • @Charliemajor I don't see what's wrong with people thinking this song is about something they relate to. If this makes someone who is sad feel better, why is that ever bad? I don't think you should be so ellitist - just let people enjoy music that is here for everyone to listen to not just the people who "get" it.

  • @ciaracustard If it's open to interpretation then you have now concept on how people can decide how these words build their reality. Your asleep man, wake up and see more than yourself or anything that you believe in. If there are no questions there are no answers. Live!

  • @Royals89 I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that but I'll agree to the last word. By any means, how people respond to Conor's music, how people live and under what assumptions are their own decisions unless they harm other people. All this is somewhat unimportant in the context of a youtube comments section and I wish not to fill up the space on this wonderous video any further. Cherrio, Ciara.

  • I wonder if like Shakespeare, Conor Oberst will have scholors dedicated to his lyrics?

  • souls can only ache for so long before numbness takes over. then you listen to bright eyes and remember what its like to hurt and even smile for real. i cant wait to become numb again.

  • Mr. Nobody

  • by far one of his most powerful songs

  • Oh Conor Oberst my friend, I'm still free, and I'm runnin away. And I know yall are comin for me. Haha, I love your music. I hope the devils of fame let you walk away. God bless you.

  • just like everyone else heart break it will pass

  • my ex put this on a cd and i had it in my car for like a week later i totaled my car and i didnt listen to the cd tell about a week ago after we broke up and the first time i heard it i dont think ive ever cried harder in my life and my parents are getting a divorce

  • Me and my partner gave our all in an attempt to buy tickets for when Bright Eyes came to a show that was fairly close. However, we didn't get tickets. Instead, I find myself looking over 'touted' tickets on ebay pricing us out of the market. How can people do this to somebody?

  • I just had the worst night of my life and I can't explain how sad this song makes me feel. I broke up with my girlfriend a month and some days ago, and I've never been more depressed in my life. This song has helped me and hurt me more than anything. It helps me get through the sadness but brings up many memories of us. I don't know how to feel anymore. I've lost so much lately. My life is falling apart. God damn it, I hate life. I need help. This seems to be as close as I can get to help.

  • @314fox413 just remember that life will always get better. Sometimes when things get tough it's hard to see that dawn is coming, but never forget that night can't last forever. If leaving her has really hurt you this badly then you must have really been happy with her. Keep living and striving so that someday somehow you can have that feeling again.

  • @childofthelittlemind that just made my day. thank you. =]

  • gay

  • Greed Is a Bottomless pit. You got that fuckin right

  • "I dreamed you were carried away on the crest of a wave" I fucking love this man. He's coming to my city in April and I've pre-ordered my ticket already. I really, really can't wait. I hope he plays this song but I'm sure he won't.

  • "ive grown tired of holding this pose, i feel more like a stranger each time i come home"

  • Lucinda taught it to Emmylou you retards. Jesus.

  • ok people stop fighting on youtube especially on a Bright eyes video...we need to show love not conflictï
