At least they used a strap ling enough to allow the Unimog to ford the river completely, thus preventing the chance that both vehicles become stuck in the river, and in the highly unlikely chance the Unimog gets stuck the land orver could have ahem "tried" to pull it out.

It's engine was not running and they were worried that it might not withstand the strong current in the river. So with the driver on the outside, it was less chance of him being trapped inside. Whether this was a wise decision or not, I am not going to say...
