It has already been released on DVD, but they all sold out and now it is very rare/expensive to get. This new release is primarily for Blu-ray, not DVD (although they will release the same copy on DVD at the same time). Mastering for high definition takes a long time...that is why the wait. But the DVD, if you don't have Blu-ray, that will release at the same time as the Blu-ray, will be better quality than the one that is already out, as it will use the newly mastered transfer.

I honestly think it's smart of Disney and the other film studios release both so everyone can experience these films. Also, it's going to have the same restoration, just in slightly lower picture quality.

@trisrays I always say, "Every Disney animated classic is special in its own way." Not just the Diamond Editions. In 1966, Winnie the Pooh was introduced in America became a popular icon. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" became popular among adults (And led to the success of "The Little Mermaid.") "Cinderella" brought the studio back to the way it was before the war years. "Fantasia 2000" made Walt's dream of another "Fantasia" a reality. But "Mermaid" and "Lion King" are PERFECTLY made films!

@bslatky But you know the blu-rays include a standard dvd in them anyway, so really If I was disney I would not make dvds anymore. I would just include one dvd in the blu-ray. I wouldn't go all out on dvd artwork and the whole package thing. But thats me and me only. Do yourself some good and acquire a taste -- no, a freaking appetite for what I like to call "Master-Animation Cinema", because The Lion King is overloaded with it. @FantasticFlutist Where do I begin with you? I love The Little Mermaid, but you are DROP-DEAD-WRONG about The Lion King. The film, for a fact, is a good one. It deals with serious subject matters (death and betrayal), tells an incredible story, as well as dishing out brilliant animation and a powerful musical score. TLM is good, but clearly not Disney's best; that honor belongs to Fantasia, IMO.

BTW, I have taste. That's exactly why I sit through hours of sophisticated films such as this one.

Along with The Great Mouse Detective, it was a powerful turning point for Disney. I just don't think it's the best, and neither is Lion King (for as much as I love it.)

Films like Fantasia, 101 Dalmatians and Sleeping Beauty are among the best, IMO, because of their technical, artistic and storytelling values.
