@Jupitersgoose i believe the version you are referring to is by the band "the mortal coil" with guest singer Elizabeth Fraser, not the cocteau twins :)
@stoopiddub333 the name of the collective is This Mortal Coil. ''Another Day'' is on This Mortal Coil's 1984 album ''It'll End In Tears'' and it's singed by Elizabeth Fraser. She is Cocteau Twins singer. I advice to everyone to try This Mortal Coil music. It's something special and moving and amazing. I adore This Mortal Coil
One of the things I love so much about This Mortal Coil project is it allows you to discover so many great story tellers that sadly are falling one by one by the wayside.Great lyrics.Great song...
I went to see hm about 15 years ago in Belfast - he told me and my mate to shut up because we were talking too much. But we were talking about how good he was - fabulous singer/songwriter must be good if Zep pay homage to him! Love this song.
I love this song. My first boyfriend took me to see him at the hammersmith pallais when we were both 17 in post punk bands in 1979 and I wanted to hate him but I just melted. I never forgot this song. Chris White. Do you remember?
In response to Neohip (4 days ag), Roy's music still sends a shiver... About him making more of his own music, he was the most combative folk singer of the late 1960 /. 1970s in the Liedermacher (song-maker) school, . My sense is that Roy was all about people living in lives in which they were exploited; to exploit oneself is just part of that process. hence his contradictory gestures e.g. burning money in public.BTW I am sure Roy doesn't read these comments
At 50, I recently "discovered" this man......how amazing, after all of these years, I've found a major influence to so many of the bands that I've loved throughout the years .....and I thought that there was no more worthwhile music to find....he is amaziing..HATS OFF TO ROY HARPER
@fishrmanjohn That's pretty much me as well. I discovered him at 47 and luckily saw him at Darwen in Lancashire. I came away from that concert shaking my head in disbelief at why I hadn't ever heard his music. Anyone that has seen him live will testify that it is a life changing experience.
I imagine it was a happy one full of love and mirth, and he was entiltled to I!!., What the poor bugger never saw coming was the 2010 wave of artists who idolised him and named him as an influence.
To be honest,I have long thought he should have made more of his own music, but to hear so many artists today talk about him is a very neat Coda.
The only way he will be" retired" now is when they put him in a box.
I only ever heard of Roy Harper through Led Zep's Hat's Off, but to hear this man, my god the passion and soul that he convey's blows my mind have never heard such a beautiful yet tragic song like this, Hats off to you Roy
@TRANSAM19777 Oh man. To see him in concert in the 70's and 80' - talk about passion and soul!!! Those days have more or less gone, but at least we still have the songs and some video clips. I saw Roy many times, but one time stands in my mind - three hours of straight-from-the-heart Roy at The Crucible in Sheffield on my 20th Birthday. He went on so long I missed my train back to Nottingham and spent a freezing night in the train station - complaining? I don't think so.
Poignant, moving, he sings like he is writing about all our own personal moments; first heard this by Mortal Coil, and that is amazing, the strings are similar, and Liz Frazer's vocal's ike splinterring glass inside ice, but Roy makes it so real, I had no idea at the time, in the '80's, that this was his, is superb, makes me cry, past loves, regrets, but hope**********
Poignant, moving, sensitive but raw; I first heard the Mortal Coil cover in the '80's, had no idea until a few years ago that this was by Roy Harper; this is really superb, although Liz Frazer/Cocteaus/Mortal Coil version was beautiful, like splintering glass in a dream; Roy's poetry is sublime, he writes like he is writing about all of our own personal moments************
I love this song. Originally heard the This Mortal Coil version and the got exposed to this when the TMC box set came out. This one is so much more real. It really hits me on an emotional level like very few accoustic songs ever do.
Saw Roy a few times in the late 60's at Mothers in Birmingham or at The Lanchester Poly in Coventry. Has anyone got his song Nobody's Got Any Money In The Summer that is on the Rock Machine Turns You On album? Not quite in the same class as this song but I can't find it anywhere.
poetry melody and social commentary. One of England's unsung hero's. When the wind on forget-me-nots blows, as the winds of eternity rise, and i walk away. Its seriously about time that we included more noble poets like this in education.
Wow!! Never heard of this man (I'm from Houston, TX), but I learned by reading the biography Pink Floyd: A Saucerful of Secrets that he is the vocals on Have A Cigar. Happy Discovery!
Flat Baroque is a masterpiece and one of my favourite albums ; got a mint condition 1970 vinyl copy without an EMI box logo on the Harvest label and another original copy i first had in 1971 AND a c.d. of it !! Lol
wow. I love making discoveries through other music. I was expecting a situation similar to 'Song to the Siren', where the original is so different, it's difficult to love after the TMC version.
this is stunning, all on its own. and this guy is obviously something very special.
I have seen Roy over the years many times. His oneness with fans is so special. If you haven't got Stormcock just buy it, utterly beautiful and a vast talent.
June 2, 1973, Kezar Stadium San Francisco. The Tubes opened, then Lee Michaels. Then, as Led Zeppelin set up Robert Plant introduced "England's Bob Dylan" and it was Roy Harper and he sang a song about how flying to America at a certain time you follow the sunrise.
The pure genius of Harper takes your breath away , this is such a profound song . As well as being stunningly good music its poetry of the highest order .The man is/was/and always will be without equal
Roy is a flash of red against the grey. All those boring mega bands plodding on, while the poet called the tune. He is Summer, Autumn, Spring and winter in one expansive song like Same old rock.
I used to play this on my guitar when I WAS 17, 39 years ago!! And until now I had completely forgotten it.... it just takes me back to who I was then and how I got to be who I am now...... he is beautiful
@snakeawake Used to listen to this when I was fifteen. Learned to play guitar over the years and play it now. Exactly the opposite to you but one thing remains.......Brilliant song!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even now.
Poets are magical, emotional beings who touch the places that you can't describe.
The North West of England, Lancashire if you like, has been blessed with some of the most creative and sensitive poets, musicians and wordsmiths. Roy is one of many.
Time and place is important. Engrained in the work is the region, but somehow it is universal. The man is apoet first, but just the most unique singer live. No one comes close, not even the famous friends.
well done that man who sang it a his wedding for it is one of the most beautiful love songs, personally I'm going to sing 'O mia bambino caro'. in the unlikely event that anyone is daft enough to marry me. Considering I have a soprano...
This was always my favourite from This Mortal Coil's album, but I didn't realise it was a cover. So sad. I'm not sure I'll be able to listen to it the same way again no I know the lyrics.
There is another version of this song too by Roy Harper. He has the David Bedford Orchestra backing him in this one and it is even more powerful than this version. Check my videos for it.
This song and indeed this album helped me through the worst break up in my life. You have saved my soul with your music so many times roy i cannot begin to say thank you.
