The music was amazing!! Each fade from Abby, to Val and then Gary. The two women who love the same man had two very complete sides to them. The music intensified what is one of the best endings to a show I have ever seen! You wondered what each of these characters were thinking and feeling. I agree with the others who said Knots did silence better than any other show. I've seen others try to replicate this formula but don't even come close. I so miss this show!!
This was definitely one of the best of the Knots' season finales and the show really took off in the ratings and popularity after this season. This finale grew organically from the storylines all coming together and crafted very carefully and executed letter perfect by a terrific cast. I miss the show terribly.
God I love this. Knots Landing season 4 is pretty much what any scripted drama should strive for. Perfect, natural, and not forced at all, but good, real, and consistent with the characters. And what a perfect conclusion to a terrific season. I have this season on VHS and need to rewatch it soon!
@stickyNsweet08 I have to say I liked Dallas and then got into Knots...what I liked about Dallas was that it was definitely a guys soap. Although it had its faults and all...the two were different in tone and storytelling...I can't wait for them to release all of the seasons here in the US!
This is one of my all time favorite endings for KL,Valene's wise words to Gary,Karen's justified panic, and the way they show Val ,Abby and Gary in deep contemplation ending with a Gary freeze frame that mimics a newspaper picture, just pure excellence from the Writers directors and actors.Knots Landing did Silence better than any show I can think off.
Joan Van Ark is so on here-- this may be her best performance of the series. "Your giving up your life for hers means absolutely nothing" cuts so deeply.
It would've been better if Karen hadn't burst into that hysterically unconvincing wail: D-I-A-N-A. KL left out its trademark subtlety there. A freezeframe of Karen would've worked better.
Valene is incorrect about Gary's behavior during his blackouts...or she's forgotten that he slapped HER during Season 1 while lunging for a drink...Val sported a black eye for days!
True...and in the 1st season of Dallas Lucy was almost gloating over the fact that Gary used to give her momma a good whooping! I think they decided to drop that aspect of Gary and Vals relationship!
Uh no! Don't even try to start that stuff. Dallas and Knots Landing were BOTH good in their own distinct way. Dallas was just amazing to watch because of J.R. Knots Landing was more emotional and deeper and had storylines that common people could relate to.
ciji dunnes murder is the strangest murder mystery possiblyl ever........everyone, it seemed, had a motive to kill her (gary, val, richard, kenny ginger, chip) but she wasnt exactly a monster.......alot of the motives for murder were misunderstandins (richard for example, thinking she was laura's lover) or chips manipulations (gary, kenny, ginger). of course chip the sleazebag was the actual killer
I remember this show. It was one of the best on tv at the time. Great acting and writing. Character driven stories are the ones I love to watch and write. Too bad they don't make them like this anymore.
I think that this is the kind of cliffhangers I'd like to have in my writing--character driven not dependent upon some hijinks. I also loved the wasy Joan stepped up Val's character in this scene. And--I always love to see Karen run. She has a run of purpose, and you get anxious just seeing her run
I agree, I also write a soap like show of this kind, today it would be interesting as cliffhangers seem to rely on the extreme and unbelievable, mainly to do with the competition i suppose!
That's why I don't like daytime soaps, because they rely on this because so many of them are competing it's craziness. That's why I would have my soap opera come on in the night time when people are looking to be entertained instead of titillated
I also love daytime and nighttime drams-what I enjoyed about Knots Landing as well as daytime shows is the very slow revealing plots-as opposed to today RUSH to the point sotrylines. This was teh best KNTOS LANDING season ever.
Joan Van Ark has spent a lot of time as Valene Ewing, but I really would love to see her act in a role apart from the Knots universe, same with Shackelford too
Thank you! This episode was my introduction to Knots Landing and I was hooked! Loved the shot of Abby on the balcony and the way the image of Gary froze and became the cliffhanger.

Joan Van Ark shines in her scene with Gary, she has been underrated as an actress because of her length of portrayal as Valene

One of the best of the Knots Landing season finales. It grew out of the storylines intertwining, masterfully written and acted. Thanks for posting.

this was a great season finale and awesome storyline... best in knots history, if not tv history.

I'm a soap writer myself and I want a prime time show to sit it apart from the drivel of daytime. Maybe we can compare notes sometime.

That's no problem, maybe we could be co writers or something

@kirbyco1221 Richard Avery summed up Season 4 best when he said to JR that Seaview Cir was more like a war zone
