What? Serah was just as interesting as Lightning! She may not have been as badass, but she was interesting in a different way. And she proved that she may actually be braver than Lightning towards the end of the game. the downfall of the FF franchise started off with Squaresoft emerging with Enix which then became SquareEnix as we now know today..kids these days love rainbow colored-lights. This game was pretty enjoyable only for the battle system..nothing else..the maps and the storyline are way too linear. @sonicblade1587 it'd seem as though i'm the more irrational old school fanboy here so I'll answer ur questions in regards to why we prefer the FF past games over your so-called best rpg. for us, graphics are important too but not as much as storyline and the whole aspect of the game-play itself. somewhere along the way after ff9 the ff games took on a different route. it seems as though the producers are more concern about their obsessions/fetishes of underdressed characters.
This game is great, but honestly even though 13 was very linear, I really didn't care, it had a great story, battle system, and beautiful graphics. Speaking of which, I can't understand why the graphics were so downgraded in this game...
@chipndipy way to over-generalize, I loved ff12, almost more then 7, but 6 will always be the best, however I think ff13 is just plain mediocre, and ff13-2 looks like a circus. you can enjoy the 13 games, but don't be a dick about it. its people like you that can't acknowledge when there are some flaws in a game and get incredibly defensive about it is when the term "fanboy" becomes more appropriate.
I've never played a final fantasy game in my life, but I decided to download this demo and give it a shot, and I really got hooked to it. Might have to buy it now.
10 remains my favorite but the newer games arent bad. They're just expanding outwards, besides theres no point in complaining about it because Sqaure isnt going to make them forever. Eventually there will be no more Final Fantasies and then your all going to be really bored :p

You know I have disliked Final Fantasys before but you need to look at them with a clear mind and thing about what your getting. I've played most of them other then 10-2 and 11 and I disliked 6 and 13 at first. But when you start to get into the games they really start to shine and bring out that beautiful element which many of them had. Every final fantasy has its problem but its the things that make it great that make them one of the most well known game series out there today.

@phimxoomhuam Dude i love the older final fantasies but remember they can't be compared to free roaming RPG's, if Square starts making their games like a turned based skyrim then it wouldn't be a Final Fantasy anymore, all of them have always had a sense of Linearity and I think that the strong attachment to the story is what makes FF such a good series
@1CJMac1 obviously, ur too young that's why u dont remember what the old FF games used to be or how it felt like and it's nothing like skyrim ok. esp. ff-6 to ff-9. every game had a sense of linearity but all the previous FF game prior to FF10 has a sense of free roaming/side quests. players are free to roamed or simply follow the storyline if they choose to. as I've said, all the recent FF games today are nothing more than some producers fetishes/fantasies of underdressed characters.
I firmly believe the turning point for this series was the departure of Matsuno part-way through FF12. If he had stayed and finished the game I think it would be held in the same regard as 6, 7, 8 and 9. It's a shame how the series has gone, it doesn't even seem like they're stuck in the past, they just have the completely wrong idea of what their audience want.
pretty spot on review, xiii-2 is better than xiii and im enjoying it so far, biggest let down for me is the auto saving, if you mess something up and hit an auto save point you have no choice but to carry on, doesnt happen often though.
There aren't much JRPG out there anymore like it was in PS1 era and I think it was a gutsy move by SquareEnix to redo a commercially failed FFXIII. I respect their effort and I believe it's important to support them by buying it. Unfortunate rise of western RPG, we are beginning to see a blur between RPG/FPS/action genre. I am sorry to say but I hate western RPG for being so generic and lack of artistic style. Just because they smack a stat screen on FPS doesn't make a good RPG.
I gotta say: Gamespot's reviews are sublime compared to IGN reviews. I convinced myself not to get this, because I did get bored with XIII, but this does look so much better.

I am enjoying this one but i must say 13-1 had a lot better of a story and kept me going. This one is lacking its story but still has good gameplay. Also the character roster was better and larger in the first one.
@xKingBimpyx The only reason we thought most of the characters in the older games had "flare and interest" is because the dialogue was text-based, giving us more room for imagination. And people end up disliking characters for the most trivial things, so it's not a very good judge of the game.
Anyway, while we're complaining about characters and story, whatever happened to the complaints about linearity and lack of involvement? Those aspects have been fixed, yet no one seems to care.
I've said it before: Just cause you like the older games more than the newer ones does NOT make you any better than fans of the new games, and it is NOT okay to question their tastes in games either. FFXIII-2 is a good game overall, (maybe not the absolute perfection from the heavens like all the old fans of the series want but it's a good game), arguably better than XIII and a step in the right direction. Is it not possible now for even more such steps to be made? Be positive people.

For old FF fans like me. This isn't FF, but it's still cool. If you can accept that the name and the elements like Chocobo are just Square Enix taking liberty with their IP, then you can enjoy this as much as I am. It is definitely an interesting JRPG unlike the previous installment.
@exiquio as old FF fans like me, we believe there's no such thing as an FF feel (besides mascots). That feel only came from what the consoles could only do back then (pixelated sprites to polygons and limitation in color). When FFXIII and 2 hitted the shelves with what the graphics should have been then, the sequels feels so worned out from the series' cliches.
These new Final Fantasy games remind me waaaayyyy too much of the Kingdom Heart games. SquareEnix lost it's mojo, perhaps it's trying to reach for a younger crowd. They should really listen and research their true audiences (is not that hard- all you have to do is read all the forums or all the reviews and it's comments). The customer is always right, in the end- it's they that keeps you from starving. Fore me, ff13-2 is yet another fail, ff14 for the ps3 is going to be another fail as well.
@22newname my problem is that Enix's generation of FF's e.g.. 12, 13 + 13-2 have all being cheesy, linear games with terrible combat systems which Enix pass off as 'innovative'. Before Enix, Squaresoft had made 10 rpgs that were unmatched in terms of originality and quality. The stories were a hell of a lot more interesting and immersive and perhaps best of all Nobuo Uematsu composed all the music and that man is a genius. They had a recipe that worked, and they changed it, huge mistake.

I'm not forbidding change by any means but Enix have clearly tried to be innovative and failed on numerous levels. @chipndipy it pisses me off when you talk about innovation as if FF13 was the first to try something different. FFX was a big departure from FF9 with its largely linear story and new voice acting but was generally loved and adored by most FF fans. FF7 was unique too and of course rightly got accliam. FF13 sucked pure and simple with its all style no substance approach and thats why ff fans criticize it not because it was 'new'. All we want is for square to make good games again.

The reason why FF7 received so much praise is because it was the first FF played by most game people, but disappointed fans of FF1-6. Also, whether or not Final Fantasy XIII is a good game is entirely subjective. It turns out that older fans are unwilling to open up to change like a more story-driven game or a faster-paced battle system. Anyway, if you want a good game, then it should be to your best interest to play this one.
@chipndipy FF7 did NOT disappoint FF fans, youre using that as an unfair attempt to prop up your argument. There is an element of snobbery from fans of FF1-FF6 regarding 7 but thats not because of the game but its MASSIVE popularity. I joined the franchise at FF7 and went back and forward from 1-10 and loved them all but seriously 12 was a major disappointment, and 13 was woeful, it has nothing to do with them being new, they're just BAD! here's hoping ff 15 rejuvinates the series!
@BOSIE321 You wouldn't know about 7's disappointments, considering the fact that you were a new fan at the time. Most complaints were drowned out by the surge in popularity of that time. EVERY Final Fantasy has hate, some more than others, and which game is good or not is debatable. Heck, I can still remember how polarizing 8 was. I'm willing to open up to the new experiences this series has to offer. Just because you may think the newer games are bad doesn't mean you should blame the company.

and for the most part I didn't care much for the FF series. It was only recently that I tried both FFIX and FFXIII and I can definitely say that the former was much more engaging. It was charming and inviting instead of trying to be trendy and ubercool. I cared about the setting, plot and characters. Can't say the same for FFXIII or, for that matter, FFVII. Not everything is tinted by nostalgia.

@TheMustik92 except you're required to think out strategies in other JRPGs while 'autoattack' pretty much does everything that the paradign doesn't in FFXIII. No JRPG required so little thinking in combat like FFXIII and -2 does.
@nelsonta00 strategies are the paradigms for and the whole debate about auto battle can be thrown right out the window because it's optional not a mandatory thing in the game. Also no thinking in the game? Have you ever beaten a long guior the immortal ceith in both games? Then you'll see how little thinking you may believe there is in the game
@TheMustik92 You say its optional, but if you want the most effective and quickest way to burn down the mobs, auto-attack is the best option. You're basically telling me to gimp myself to make the game more challenging, and that is the problem with the game: here should not have been an overpowering "I-Win" button. Even then, you're only able to control 1 person. At least in FFXII you are allowed to explore higher level areas that forces you use all your characters.

Seriously, there are many rgp that have a win button that will basically play it self out for you and they don't get crap for it. Long Gui is ok. I farmed his ass all the time. He's only tough when you're undergear, not using Vanille/Sazh/Fang, and have no idea what's the best paradigm strategy. You make him sound so challenging.
@nelsonta00 spamming death doesn not make it easy, it makes it cheap, broken unfair. Also I've used every character to beat a Long Gui and it's not as easy when you decide to just fight them by spamming death. Try fighting with Snow, Hope and Sazh.

The game play and exploration are the only things that need to be praised because THIS FUCKING TIME THEIR DONE RIGHT, but on a level that still makes it crap.
Hopefully just hopefully.. FFV13 will bring the series back to life.. FF13 n FF13-2 i could just buy loads of copys, snap the discs n post them to square enix
@legendofzelda13 Well it depends on your point of view. A lot of people still enjoy FF games and want more. Also, ending the series because it's not doing well now could rob us of potentially great sequels later on. Imagine if FF3 through 6 had not done well and they had cancelled the series then. People have lost faith in Square Enix, but FFXIII-2 is a step in the right direction. For them to give up now would go against one of the things FF taught us. Never give up. Dramatic, huh? XD
. . . . in which square are going, which is a shame, but we can only hope they recreate some of the previous magic within the next game. like i said though, it is still a good game, which some good moments to look forward to, so I would still play it if you get the chance!

Every game form ff4 up until ff 10 (and possibly 12, although i thought the characters were awful) has been phenominal in terms of what an RPG should have. and although this is a good game, it really does have a "10-2" feel about it, and this seems to be the way . . . .
Well i have just completed this game today. up to this point, i have not read or seen any reviews, as I didnt want to hinder my perspective, with that of nostalgic fans. Overall, I thought that it was a good RPG, nut not a GREAT one. if this game had been called anything else other than final fantasy, Id be saying what a good game it is, however, due to the apparent changes that square seem to be making in comparison to the other final fantasys, its difficult to give this game the credit . . . .
who complained about this game? now from those people, who tried this game? no response. my thought's exactly. if you haven't given this game a try before you complain, your being a stubborn fanboy. want to avoid this as your image? play the entire game.
finally, RPG HD remakes are pointless, as you'd already know where to go, what to do a boss's weakness etc. there's a reason why it's in your closet collecting dust.

I used to be a huge fan, but after FF7 the series really started going downhill. FFX was pretty good, but even that one was just meh compared to the classics.

You know I have disliked Final Fantasys before but you need to look at them with a clear mind and thing about what your getting. I've played most of them other then 10-2 and 11 and I disliked 6 and 13 at first. But when you start to get into the games they really start to shine and bring out that beautiful element which many of them had. I firmly believe the turning point for this series was the departure of Matsuno part-way through FF12. If he had stayed and finished the game I think it would be held in the same regard as 6, 7, 8 and 9. It's a shame how the series has gone, it doesn't even seem like they're stuck in the past, they just have the completely wrong idea of what their audience want.

There aren't much JRPG out there anymore like it was in PS1 era and I think it was a gutsy move by SquareEnix to redo a commercially failed FFXIII. I respect their effort and I believe it's important to support them by buying it. Unfortunate rise of western RPG, we are beginning to see a blur between RPG/FPS/action genre. @xKingBimpyx The only reason we thought most of the characters in the older games had "flare and interest" is because the dialogue was text-based, giving us more room for imagination. And people end up disliking characters for the most trivial things, so it's not a very good judge of the game.
Anyway, while we're complaining about characters and story, whatever happened to the complaints about linearity and lack of involvement? Those aspects have been fixed, yet no one seems to care.

These new Final Fantasy games remind me waaaayyyy too much of the Kingdom Heart games. SquareEnix lost it's mojo, perhaps it's trying to reach for a younger crowd. They should really listen and research their true audiences (is not that hard- all you have to do is read all the forums or all the reviews and it's comments). @22newname my problem is that Enix's generation of FF's e.g.. 12, 13 + 13-2 have all being cheesy, linear games with terrible combat systems which Enix pass off as 'innovative'. Before Enix, Squaresoft had made 10 rpgs that were unmatched in terms of originality and quality. The stories were a hell of a lot more interesting and immersive and perhaps best of all Nobuo Uematsu composed all the music and that man is a genius. They had a recipe that worked, and they changed it, huge mistake.

A lot of the guys involved in the original FF's walked out because of the new direction Enix were taking the series. FFX was a big departure from FF9 with its largely linear story and new voice acting but was generally loved and adored by most FF fans. FF7 was unique too and of course rightly got accliam. FF13 sucked pure and simple with its all style no substance approach and thats why ff fans criticize it not because it was 'new'. All we want is for square to make good games again.

@BOSIE321 All FFs had innovation, which I had already pointed out. The reason why FF7 received so much praise is because it was the first FF played by most game people, but disappointed fans of FF1-6. Also, whether or not Final Fantasy XIII is a good game is entirely subjective. It turns out that older fans are unwilling to open up to change like a more story-driven game or a faster-paced battle system. Anyway, if you want a good game, then it should be to your best interest to play this one.

@chipndipy FF7 did NOT disappoint FF fans, youre using that as an unfair attempt to prop up your argument. There is an element of snobbery from fans of FF1-FF6 regarding 7 but thats not because of the game but its MASSIVE popularity. I joined the franchise at FF7 and went back and forward from 1-10 and loved them all but seriously 12 was a major disappointment, and 13 was woeful, it has nothing to do with them being new, they're just BAD! here's hoping ff 15 rejuvinates the series!

@BOSIE321 You wouldn't know about 7's disappointments, considering the fact that you were a new fan at the time. Most complaints were drowned out by the surge in popularity of that time. EVERY Final Fantasy has hate, some more than others, and which game is good or not is debatable. Heck, I can still remember how polarizing 8 was. I'm willing to open up to the new experiences this series has to offer. Just because you may think the newer games are bad doesn't mean you should blame the company.

FF-6 to FF-9 graphics may be choppy but it has good storyline/gameplay.there's an element of feel to these older games players get that they just don't get it from these sci-fi underdressed/dead or alive beach ball FF games. say what u want but the facts are there. FF-7 has sold nearly 10millions world wide and no other FF games has top that yet. your so-called great FF-10 to FF-13 was approx. 3.5 to 4.8 million worldwide each.

@chipndipy Yeah, as long as they are good. But unfortunately squeenix been slapping title of Final Fantasy on all of it's rejections. If they want to try something completely different, they should call it as something completely different.
Right now, what they are doing with Final Fantasy is something that no-one ever asked for and it is hard to appreciate game as such with a bitter taste of betrayal in mouth.

and for the most part I didn't care much for the FF series. It was only recently that I tried both FFIX and FFXIII and I can definitely say that the former was much more engaging. It was charming and inviting instead of trying to be trendy and ubercool. I cared about the setting, plot and characters. Can't say the same for FFXIII or, for that matter, FFVII. Not everything is tinted by nostalgia.

@TheMustik92 You say its optional, but if you want the most effective and quickest way to burn down the mobs, auto-attack is the best option. You're basically telling me to gimp myself to make the game more challenging, and that is the problem with the game: here should not have been an overpowering "I-Win" button. Even then, you're only able to control 1 person. At least in FFXII you are allowed to explore higher level areas that forces you use all your characters.

Seriously, there are many rgp that have a win button that will basically play it self out for you and they don't get crap for it. You're contradicting yourself when you hate auto but at the same time use it becasue it's quicker. If selecting commands in the older games were fun then it shouldn't be a problem now.

The reason why i have to hate is because its complete void of the old final fantasy feel which i really got inspired by, and since only final fantasy can produce this feel its really annoying when they dont produce it. @legendofzelda13 Well it depends on your point of view. A lot of people still enjoy FF games and want more. Also, ending the series because it's not doing well now could rob us of potentially great sequels later on. Imagine if FF3 through 6 had not done well and they had cancelled the series then. People have lost faith in Square Enix, but FFXIII-2 is a step in the right direction. For them to give up now would go against one of the things FF taught us. Never give up. Dramatic, huh? XD

that it probably deserves. Now you may be thinking, "this guys is another typical nostalgic," but when looking at where square has come from, its plain to see that it's not up to the standards that ff fans are used to. Every game form ff4 up until ff 10 (and possibly 12, although i thought the characters were awful) has been phenominal in terms of what an RPG should have. and although this is a good game, it really does have a "10-2" feel about it, and this seems to be the way . . . .

Well i have just completed this game today. up to this point, i have not read or seen any reviews, as I didnt want to hinder my perspective, with that of nostalgic fans. Overall, I thought that it was a good RPG, nut not a GREAT one. if this game had been called anything else other than final fantasy, Id be saying what a good game it is, however, due to the apparent changes that square seem to be making in comparison to the other final fantasys, its difficult to give this game the credit . . . .
