I was at this gig, and the Moody blues had to follow them, I almost felt sorry for them. I mean how do you follow this, the crowds energy was totally spent. Still it was nice to see George Harrison come on for the finale.
Actually, Jeff Lynne's voice is clearer on this than on the album version. It's easier to make out what he's singing. Listening to the album would also give one no clue that the diminutive Mr. Lynne is as good with a guitar as he shows live on stage.
I like ELO in general, and Rockaria is one of my favorite tunes, all artist included, but...
Jeff is slaughtering the tune. I got nothing against the higher tempo used in live prefomance, lots of artists do it. But its to freeking fast, he cant keep up with the tune. But on the other hand, it might be that its not only the song that is jacked up :D
Jeff Lynne is a God of the music industry, even when he's on stage he can make his music sound awesome! And that guitar solo is just awesomness itself! Awesome vid m8! Instant Fave!! =-D
I belive its triggered by a faulty microphone. Right before he rags of into a solo (that might I add, to me resembles the "Roll over Bethoven" riff with an "Rockaria twist", nothing particulary inventive ), you can barely hear the "soprano" vocalist. So, I belive that faulty equipment or badly tuned equipment forces that solo, that aint so great to start with. Thou if im right, its rather observant of Jeff to pick up on the problem.
I'm no sound-technician but I would asume that the sound is "picked up" from a feed from the... uhh... sound-board (might be the word Im looking for :P ), rather then by a single microphone, handheld or otherwise. Its 1986 not 1786 :P and its not a bootleg taken by someone with a old time videocamera. I would guess that the recording is done by BBC since the concert was in Birmingham, but thats just a guess.
@ELONut May have been why Jeff was in such good spirits here. He knew there wasn't very much longer to go until he could wrap things up and finally be free of contracts with CBS. He'd "had enough of the confusion and the madness".
There is another live video of this song, pre-1986, that is just awesome. Jeff Lynne has light blue satin on. It's on YouTube titled ELO-Rockaria. Check it out.

I'm not really a fan of the fast-paced live versions. Lynne just sounds like he wants to get it the fuck over with, and get ready for the next song.

@perkalov May be just the way the camera picks it up, it was back in 1986 and camera's were still fairly basic back then. =-S

@no1elofaniknow Is that why he is playing at 90 miles per hour? Was he thinking "I'll belt this one out, get it over with and piss off home!"
