Two comments..

A...Sounds like you have a burnt valve...

B...VWs have a very restrictive exhaust,the sooner you will slap on an extractor (header type exhaust) the engine will breathe a heck of a lot better..

Pushing the baffles out of the pea shooter exhausttips with a broom handle is another cheap way to relieve back pressure...

O man, this brings back some memories! I spend my childhood in the back of some VW-beatles. (My parents used to own these). The first one was white, the second one dark blue. (only a short time, because they gave that one to my uncle) and the last one was light blue. That one seemed to live forever. But later my parents (well my mother actually, my father doesn't drive) only bought Toyota's. They were more practical, I admit, and we, children, had more space. But now I see things differently.
