  • im a culchie in NY, ... i drank beer i n liberties, best years of my life.....

  • Im 15 and from dublin and it sickens me to know that im probably one of about 10,000 kids my age who actually listen to this music, probably never going to happen but if there is anyone reading this and have children, play them this music cause i was born and reared listening to this music and i love it

  • @Shufflerman101

    Mate I'm 15 too and I love this. :)

  • No offence to the other Dubliners, true legends all of them, but Luke was in a world of his own. Greatest Irish Singer of all time!

  • R.I.P Luke Kelly 71 today Happy Birthday no doubt yourself and Ronnie are having a sing song together!!

  • I never was in Ireland - but my Irish friends always gave me the feeling of belonging there too!

Thanks to all my wonderful friends from there!!!

  • Tune :)

  • i feel like a failure irishman, all this time i never never that flogging molly's version was a cover of the dubliners XP

  • I want to know who is singing this? I don't recognize the voice at all.

  • @cindydintn

    Luke Kelly

  • christy moore?

  • christy?

  • I like it, but the Flogging Molly version is better.

  • @Jesusisreal I couldn't disagree with you more. This is the song as it was meant to be sung-it's not that old a song-mid 1970's. I dislike those American bands like Flogging Molly that are so contrived in an effort to sound "Irish".

  • For christmas, this year, I gave my grandmother a digitally enhanced photo taken from the top of nelsons pillar in the early 1960s. When she tore off the wrapping paper, she remarked, "the rare old times" : ).

  • grey unyeilding concrete, Class cages? never been to Dublin, Im American so I dont REALLY know what this song is about.... but... from what it sounds, the contrast between the past town and the standard sounding current city is remarkably depressing. I dont know if a song about a city could be any sader...

  • @supercoolbrian

It's a great song, (and I listen to it regularly) but let's not forget those glass cages represent jobs, instead of unemployment or emigration.

    ooh sorry spoke too soon!

  • @biggmick1 fair enough. People's well being in health and etc always does come first. i mean I'm all for jobs and not starving on the streets.. but for a song about a city it is sad.

  • @FarrellConor... The correct line is: "As the grey UNyielding concrete makes a city of my Town."

  • sing this round the fire on camps with the scouts :)

  • Jesus this brings me back.. I used to sing this song when i was only 3years old & knew it off by heart... Brings back great memories...

  • Every Dubliner should be embarrassed if they dont know this song off by heart !

  • Heard lots of different artist do this song, none can come even close to Luke, i had of copy of Luke doing this song back in the early 80s, it started out with a chant about down in some lane there lived a big fat women and if you want to know her name you have to pay a shilling, anyone remenber that? I lost the copy and have never heard it since

  • i need an instrumental version of this

  • dublin shitty in the modern times

  • IRELAND FOR EVER ! !

  • *wipes a tear away. just beautiful

  • ya it does make you want to cry...but not out of sadness but out of beauty like you said.

  • our sweetest songs are of saddest thoughts... this song is just one of many pieces of proof of that fact

  • True heartfelt narrative of life and city... The gargle dims me brain, so very true.

I doubt you'll come across a cooper these days, I think its a barrel maker, the song is a an introspective history lesson.

  • WE ARE THE PEOPLE IRISH AND PROUD OF IT

  • great comment Poem ( I like to write a bit) The pull of Irish music's strong It often tells of what went wrong In tales of struggles to be free And the long fought wars to liberty So if the tune sounds strangely sad It's telling of when times were bad This gets respect and takes a bow And makes us what we were and now. • I like Flogging Molly as well myself, but their cover of this song is just not as good, doesn't give me the same feeling, the feeling that we lost many things to modern times.

  • I have loved the song since I heard it in Dublin in 2000. Though don't know the band that was playing it. Now I've uploaded the video to youtube in order to hunt down name of the band. Can anyone help?

Seems can't link the video here. You can find it via my page or with the id v=K5JXgwL0A6U. Sorry if inappropriate promoting another video but I would like to know the name of my favourite Irish band.

  • the dubliners sang by luke kelly theres loads of their vids and songs on you tube

  • Did you see it performed in a Temple Bar pub? I first heard the song only a few days ago (less than a week) performed by a ragtag group of excellent musicians at Oliver St. John Gogarty's Pub in Temple Bar, Dublin. The patrons, mostly Dubliners, were wildly appreciative. It was a magical, moving experience I won't soon forget.

  • herringthorpe its the gargle (drink) is dimmin me brain

  • Is it not just gargle in reference to the huge amount of cars, trucks, people etc in Dublin these days..??

  • i tink he means drink
