Don't talk shit, Senna had world class drivers like Prost, Mansell & Piquet to contend with, Scumi challenged no former champions to any of his titles and had drivers like Hill & Villeneuve to contend with. The only driver in Schumi's era that had any real class was Hakkinen.

In the same car in 88 and 89 Senna pulverized Prost in qualifying - 13 poles to 2 (both seasons - so 26 to 4).
Only mechanical unreliabilty gave Prost a superficial facade of being any closer in the races also. In fact, without mechanical failure, in 89 Senna's race dominance was even greater than his qualifying dominance over Prost - Senna's 5 mechanical failures WHILST leading (4 inherited by Prost) made a 11-nil scoreline falsely appear close at 6-4.
And the real confirmation of Prost's ass-whooping was that he left the team as he realized Senna was unbeatable. Yet even with a better car (1990 Ferrari with semi-auto gearbox and better handling, albeit a slightly less torquey engine) still couldn't beat Senna. And in the VASTLY superior 93 Williams he only just scraped over the line ahead of Senna with 7 wins to 5. With their cars swapped - again the score would have been 12-nil.
So why didn't Prost's car have as many of these mechanical difficulties? they were by your own admission driving the same car. Perhaps its just that Senna set his car up purley for spped and drove it past the limit, Prost was a smarter racer and it showed in race results.

In the same car in 88 and 89 Senna pulverized Prost in qualifying - 13 poles to 2 (both seasons - so 26 to 4).
Only mechanical unreliabilty gave Prost a superficial facade of being any closer in the races also. In fact, without mechanical failure, in 89 Senna's race dominance was even greater than his qualifying dominance over Prost - Senna's 5 mechanical failures WHILST leading (4 inherited by Prost) made a 11-nil scoreline falsely appear close at 6-4.

And the real confirmation of Prost's ass-whooping was that he left the team as he realized Senna was unbeatable. Yet even with a better car (1990 Ferrari with semi-auto gearbox and better handling, albeit a slightly less torquey engine) still couldn't beat Senna. And in the VASTLY superior 93 Williams he only just scraped over the line ahead of Senna with 7 wins to 5. With their cars swapped - again the score would have been 12-nil.

So why didn't Prost's car have as many of these mechanical difficulties? they were by your own admission driving the same car. Perhaps its just that Senna set his car up purley for spped and drove it past the limit, Prost was a smarter racer and it showed in race results.

Even some noobs can see that Schui rode on the coat-tails of the best team in history - any driver would have won as much as he did in the same car with team-orders - his stats are utterly meaningless.

I was thinking 1991 as that year Senna dominated and showed his class, possibly the peak of his performances came in 1991.
However McLaren has generally been strong since the 80's onwards, with a few years struggling with Ford, Peugot and 1st year Mercedes engine. All in all, top class team.

Schumacher the best?. Maybe. You can't really single out one driver, just single out a few as they've all raced in completely different eras with radically different cars, but obviously Schumacher is there alongside the likes of Senna, Fangio, Clark, Moss, Graham Hill, Stewart, Prost etc. Schumacher had his dark moments, but lets be honest, so did a few others (Senna is another with his dark moments too)

When Schui speared off at Silverstone in 99 at about the same speed Senna speared off at Tamburello in 94 - the different results were purely a matter of luck!
If Schui had been killed here like Senna unfortunately was, he would have a mediocre record - 2 World Championships and 35 wins in nearly 9 years compared to Senna's 3WC in just 8 years (and 41 wins in 10 years)
That ends the myth that Schui's stats make him the best - he was just lucky enough to be around for 250GP.

In a nutshell, Schumi had not merely an easier ride through his career than any other of the greats (though Hamilton looks set to take that fact away in the next decade), he has had circumstances beyond the wildest dreams of any other driver. Senna had the best car twice (and eevn then had to fight Prost with it too). Schumi had the best car 7 times!

Not only that, but all preferences (eg spare car, extra fresh tyre sets in practice, the spare engine in practice, etc) all went to one guy whereas other teams shared them. The net result is Schumi netted far more resources backing him than any other driver. That aint a fair fight, so most people dont give a shit about his statistical recored of wins and WC.

no - of course not - he was clearly better than his team-mates, no doubts. That's not the argument, the point is he didn't have them working against him, but with him on the track. This benefits him hugely in race strategies. The team had synergy working for them against the rest - by focussing on one driver not two, their resources aren't diluted.

I'm actually really going to miss Schumi this season, and I was never a big fan of his. Just his enthusiasm for the sport and the way he celebrated on the podium was amazing to see. He should still be in F1 without question. The man is only 37 or so and even though he isn't racing right now, he is still the worlds best driver.

Irvine and Barrichello both did some bloody fast drives back in their Jordan days. Before He signed with Ferrari, Barrichello out-scored and out-performed every one of his team-mates, including race-winners Johnny Herbert and Eddie Irvine.
