  • All it takes is a wheel to mount the kerb for a rollover to occur. In 1998 an incredible 11,000 people in the US alone were killed in rollover incidents, most of them in SUVs. Volvo addressed this problem with the XC90: boron reinforced cage four times the strength of ordinary steel and airbags that remained inflated ten times longer than other airbags (of that era). Here the Volvo hits the ground with 30 tonnes of force exerted on its pillar. I can't wait till I can afford an XC90!

  • what will happen if Volvo decides to build armored military tanks?

  • wth, i never even knew that roll over test existed.

  • They should drop the car from the sky so we would see if it really was safe.

I suppose the damage would look like very similar to this, maybe the left headlight would broke down, dunno.

One of the best cars ever build in Northern Europe !

  • @MySipuli Agree, a valid test.....if we flew cars through the air :)

  • How my wife parks.

  • A Renault versus XC90... Bring it on. I know which one I'd rather be in.

  • Typical Volvo marketing bullshit. This tests proves very little as the roof is hardly loaded. A better test is to drop the car onto is roof at a 70 degree angle to the floor. This test is simply marketing bullshit hepling to pursade people that as long as they buy the right car the manner of your driving doesn't matter. Don't fall for it, a 1970's datsun could pass this. Watch the video showing a Volvo 960 estate being smashed in a head on collision with a modern Renault supermini.

  • "they see me rollin, they hatin'"

  • All Volvo's and most European cars exceed USA requirements for safety! Where all American and Japanese cars barely meet..

  • I like how the body doesn't crumple at all, only wheels and skibox things broke.

  • I mean, not that I'm intending to perform this manoeuvre of course...

  • I've only ever owned Volvos. Can't wait till I can afford an XC90. CAN'T WAIT!

  • good cars

  • thats mean VOLVO

  • that is the most awesome test iv seen in my whole youtube career

  • If the wheel hadn't broken, you could've just drove it away...

  • The vehicle seems to exceed all safety standards.

  • Well done Volvo!

  • at least they skip this step on test track at Disney World!

  • hmm if Volvo is the safest cars in the world, what if you put a roll cage inside of it? :D

  • I'd drive away

  • if justin bieber was in it, it would have been worth

  • the ironic part is that Volvo means "i roll"

  • It actually means "to roll"

  • @SeanMoCapalto either way lol

  • @SeanMoCapalto No, with the -o ending it means I roll. To roll would have a different ending. In Latin, a word's ending determines that.

  • Exactly why I bought it

  • Стёкла не полопались,йобаный в рот!!!

  • notice that the front windscreen stayed intact it shows the rigidity of the body frame

  • @ivegotswag7 It didn't actually, look closer.

  • Why were people clapping

  • @kellycross87 because it did very well on the test.

  • Wow. I was gonna buy a Volvo a few weeks ago but I went with a BMW 745li luxury package. Good for those 3 day non stop drives to Washington Boeing plant from Hamilton Ontario Canada. But still good safety rating at least the roof didn't cave in that's when everyone dies. Volvos are cool design

  • THEY SEE ME ROLLIN', THEY HATIN'

  • Lol. the people clapped when it was all wrecked and crap

  • Car knows how to roll. LOL

  • Car knows how to roll. LOL

  • why exactly are the idiots in the background clapping?

  • @WAUZZZ81ZDA i wonder. they are applauding how safe and secure the vehicle is.

  • @WAUZZZ81ZDA becuase how good it performed

  • its sideways

  • i bet it isnt even toatald

  • please fasten your seatbelts.

  • golf clap

  • So where's the line for the ride? :D

  • I have to agree Swedish people did make a great car.

  • Comment removed

  • @Azerbaican1yer to bad its chinese

  • @homer4179 thats a chinese car, i got to say its a nice replica

  • @homer4179 Volvo cars are designed and built in sweden by swedes so it's still a swedish car but the car branch of volvo is owned by a chinese company..

  • You can hear the peoples bones being crushed as they are being thrown around in the car :(

  • @applesaregood285 that's the truck making the noise friend.....

  • I would still drive that thing as is.

  • holy shit thats thing only got scratched

  • wow, that is a safe car

  • volvo should start making tank armour for the military

  • i want that car flipping thing!!!

  • Tinkiwinki the Crashtestdummie: AGAIN AGAIN!

  • This was quite entertaining!

  • I bet that car was specially modified to be much tougher for this test. If Consumer Reports bought the same car from a Volvo dealer and did the same test, it would be a lot different.

  • @Thokko Know right? it's like they are trying to kill more people

  • @Thokko no, I have seen other test of this, and it performed just as good

  • This shows Volvos are safe but.. unless u hit a tree? i don't think i've seen a test where they crash or roll a car/SUV etc into a tree. why not do one?

  • dont worry..a little duct tape and it will be as good as new :P

  • Comment removed

  • "Build like a tank"

HELL YA! Volvo took me to a other level of fun. NOW I CAN'T DIE! :DDDDD

  • HAAAA.....HAAAA.....Your car sucks!

  • What the heck? The windshield didn't break? What is it.. bulletproof?!

  • @2setro Yes, that doesn't mean that you gonna test shoot your windshield.

  • safe car

  • And he's okay!

  • poor car, could've gived me it.

  • WOW..... A very strong roof

  • Lol, the car looks, still, plenty ready to keep on driving...

  • DO A BARREL ROLL!!!

  • I want a volvo now..

  • I like the part where the Volvo rolls over.

  • I was actually reading on a car blog that the Volvo XC90's roof strength is so tough that when they compact cars to crush them, they have to use the Jaws of Life to cut the roof because the compactor isn't strong enough to crush the roof, haha!

  • @LoveTheCity123 I was at a wrecking yard once, where they were flattening cars with a huge forklift, and stacking them like pancakes. Then they got to this mid-70's Volvo sedan. The guy tried and tried to crush it, bot the whole forklift would just lift up on top of it! He had to swing the forks into the side pillars to get it to start to fold in. Very impressive!

  • @LoveTheCity123 Really? I thought that the strongest roof was in the Volkswagen Tiguan or the Volkswagen Toureg...

  • That car could actually be driven away...

  • @kixnet It possibly could but the problem is that the side airbags might have deployed as well. So technically if any airbag deploys, the main computer shuts down and whatnots... (I truthfully think it could have been driven away IF no airbags deployed)

  • The mirrors broke off...what a piece of shit. I joke I joke. <3Volvo

  • good one humans... i need a car... bitchesss

  • did you notice the passenger wheel ripped off ?

  • Very successful results I must say....the passenger compartment virtually intact

  • Safe! Safe! Safe! JACKPOT!!!!!

    A Exclusive lifesaver.

  • And it just stops in front of the audience.

Still, I have a better solution, which works pretty much every time. It's called a rollcage, and every manufacturer should fit one.

  • Really safe!

  • it still works...

  • I would drive that car that crashed than a Corvette. That is how much I love the Volvo.

  • lol was that really worthy of applause? Gravity ALWAYS wins..

  • @SecularTechnology Well you know what? That was a rude remark, but I'll be the bigger one and I'm not going to start anything. And I forgive you for what you said. You have to remember, if you can't forgive, you can't be forgiven. Godbless

  • Volvo is still Volvo.

  • Now China bought Volvo... would it be safe to buy one?

  • What about the people who can't afford volvo's? I assume you're shit outta luck then...? lol

  • To bad it is build to handle like an oiltanker so you will probably crash every volvo you buy. Making its safety useless.

  • @18iser

Unless you cant drive it's easy to drive a XC90.

  • @Ryoukun16 What?

  • Swedish Power!

  • @DirtyBorg oh yea ;D

  • @LoveTheCity123 ..Dont ever buy FORD.. The truck hardly held up. Im suprised the rest of us even survived. What happend was my gma's belt failed so she was ejected. Turns out the year of the truck had many problems and FORD has been sued for it many times. So we ended up sueing and got 600,000 dollars. Just let everyone you know not to buy a FORD. It is a deathtrap

  • @SuckDeezNutzBitch Getting banned in three.. two..

  • @SuckDeezNutzBitch

Uhh you shit head. They are the most reliable trucks on the market. And thanks for the caps because it gived FORD a promotion. Every belt can hav a problem. You are one dumb mother fucker if you don't realize that all cars have the ability to fuck up like that, not only FORD. And no FORD hasn't been sued for that situation routinely. Just ambulance chasers like you.

  • @SecularTechnology Ahem... allow me to butt in... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! The 2003 F150 got a poor rating for a frontal offset test... and my Escape has a marginal rating for roof strength according to IIHS... I can't even trust any Ford vehicle and the service center! (After they have cheated me thousands of dollars and my reliability with my 3 year old Escape = WTH? WTF DID I BUY?) I regret getting that car AND WILL NEVER GET FORD AGAIN!

  • @LoveTheCity123 Crazy story. Glad you survived. In november of 2010, my mom, bro, grandma, and myself were on our way to cali from vegas. (We had a FORD F150) we going about 70 as well and there was a huge chunk of tire in the road so we swerved from it and the back wheels got caught in the dirt next to the roadside. We spun until we were sideways and then flipped 3 times. It was the most horrifying experience EVER! Unfortunately my granma didn't survive. The rest of us walked away though...

  • again again, i could go on for ever

  • put it on its wheels again and make a few repairs and it might still be usable/

  • Totally survivable!

Imagine the state that a Landrover Discovery, Range Rover or Freelander would be in after such a test?

  • people ask how's the fuel mileage I say it's not the best but who cares,. to me its like paying for insurance one never has to use,

  • Car took that pretty damn well, wearing seatbelts, probably wouldn't get too badly hurt in a crash like that.

  • If that was an explorer, they'd be dead

  • ok the pepole that get to crash cars for a living that would be a awsome fucking jobb

  • the word volvo is latin for i roll lol there not joking

  • DID HE DIED?!!

  • gman2000, I guess the same can be said about seat belts. The only reason to buy a car with seat belts if you are planning on getting in a wreck some day. If that is the case, maybe no one should be driving at all.

  • this shit rolled 4 times

  • It sounded like a soda can.

  • Press z or r twice to DO A BARREL ROLL!

  • and the wheels are actually tethered to the car? other cars the wheels would probably come flying off...

  • the roof structure is really strong. it's like a rallye car.

  • Try some defensive driving... you might not need a car/suv with a crushproof roof after all. I mean, if you buy this car with the intention of one day maybe rolling off of a cliff, maybe you shouldn't be driving??

  • Geez ! That was amazing ! I love at EXACTLY when both of the wheels come off of the hauling machine at 0:01, you can see the side curtain airbags develop in the speed of lightning. I would kill to see a roll over of the new XC60 ! I bet it would have the same exact results as it's brother, the XC90 ! Volvo for life, baby !

  • its so safe

  • And that's why when the baby comes along, bye bye sporty S60, hello Tank XC90!

  • '

after rolling then push back to the road,,,

then start the motor and drive it on the road,,,

    will that work or fail

  • I have had esp kick in on a fuel slicked roundabout at 30pmh, i was able to keep controll and avoid the fors that had just slid side ways in front of me. Esp certainly helps and is noticeable but do not rely on it, your driving skills should be enough, esp is for the one day when something un expected happens... as a side note "its a little dented, its still good! its still good!!

  • golf clap, please

  • makes me hungry..... sounds like a crispy fried chicken!!!!

  • Our choice is final! Volvo here we come!

  • The captiva has Active Rollover Protection btw

  • Sounds like a carton of eggs being thrown down the stairs. :D lol

  • mr volvo guys can i work for u i like to destroy cars too

  • This car saved my life. Last week, I was on the New Jersey Turnpike heading to work in my 2007 Volvo XC90 like I do every day, and I was going about 70 MPH .. The NJ Turnpike does not have any guardrails surrounding lanes, which is a bit dangerous. So anyways, while I was only about 4 miles from my work place, a semi truck crossed the median and I swerved very quickly and fast, only to miss the semi and flip over 8 times. I had no scratches on me. The police officers said the car saved my life.

  • @LoveTheCity123 HAHAHAHAHAHA bull fuking shit buddy, BULL FUKING SHIT

  • @dergangedchipmunk No one is asking you to believe me. Look it up in the news. NY1 news to be exact.

  • @LoveTheCity123

I thought the esp would prevent rollovers?

  • @alteclansing3333 It's common sense ... Are you really asking that question ? ESP is useless on any vehicle when you are going 70 MPH and you swerve so fast it runs you into the median ....

  • @LoveTheCity123 i AM really asking the question.

Watch the video "Top Gear - Fifth Gear - Bosch ESP" on youtube, the guy demonstrates it at exactly 70mph and it works fine, i think the height of the xc90 makes it particularly susceptible to rollovers, and btw i drive my chevrolet captiva on the highway in rain at 120mph and sometimes make hard turns to avoid dumbasses on the road. in those cases the esp does dome on and stabilize the car. Are you telling saying that esp only works below 70mph??

  • @alteclansing3333 it prevents rollovers, but that doesn't mean that a rollover can't happen, especially if you roll down a steep hill LOL.

  • @LoveTheCity123 It is not a gimmick. Volvo makes the safest vehicles of any brand. Despite their fun to drive nature, I don't think you would have been so lucky had that been a BMW X5.

  • @BCCHSMD Well, I don't know about that .. The BMW X5 is extremely safe as well .. New BMW's, Volvo's, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen cars are safe and there is a low chance you will even be injured in them ..

  • @LoveTheCity123 thats a great story unfortunately geely automotive(a chinese company) purchased volvo i can only see quality suffer now!

  • @Captainbob25202000 Nah .. Volvo will always keep up their safety. That's the corporations #1 goal, regardless of what engineering team makes them .

  • @Captainbob25202000 Its probably going to go down so bad they are going to build the cars in China or Volvo could turn into what Saab is right now, Government Motors destroyed that company

  • @klukash it was Genral Motors. Its a shame about saabs although they are still in production and good cars. If they did make volvos and saabs in china it would devastate the 2 towns where the plants were.

  • @tom201090 The only Saab that was planned to be made in China was 1 model of the 9-3 for the Chinese market ONLY. Everyone else would have Swedish Saabs. Saab is now part of Spyker super cars in the Netherlands.

  • @LoveTheCity123 hello just read your story, glad the volvo saved you, sorry if i dont seem surprised, i know how volvos are built, thats due to the boron steel volvo use , hope you got another volvo , kindest regards darren.

  • @LoveTheCity123 Stop bullshitting you fucking nigger.

Everyone, read this bitches comments on other videos. This nigger keeps saying that her family owns every car thats in a video. This bitch obviously drives a 1989 Toyota Camry.

  • @LoveTheCity123 well its a volvo haha

  • @LoveTheCity123 God bless this car!

  • @LoveTheCity123 glad your ok (:

  • @LoveTheCity123 Thanks for posting that ,my brother has a 1998 volvo s70 and we were in a pretty bad car crash me and my brother walked away without a scratch we were on the freeway around 60mph she was in her favorite car a scion tc lets just say it''s not a scion anymore total loss!!!

my brother fixed his volvo and is bad on the road his dent was not that bad,and the car has 125,000 miles.I love old volvo's always have always will

  • @Captainbob25202000 Agreed. I will never drive anything else other than a new Volvo or a new Mercedes-Benz. After I crashed my XC90, I got a 2009 Volvo C70 and my wife just got a 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350. I am glad we own safe cars and never have to worry about any bad injuries.

  • @LoveTheCity123

    Glad you were ok.

My mum drives a Saab 9-5 2005 - Also a 5 star car. We skidded on a road with mud and went into a forest smashing over tree stumps and hitting the side of a tree. The car was a write off, but we were completely fine with not even a scratch.

Volvo and saab are fantastic safe cars. Wouldn't buy anything else.

  • @racer17551 I need to argue that... Volvo and Saab are very good cars (well of course they are because of that price) but they aren't so great on a bumper crash. I remember one of my friends accidentally hit my Mazda6 with his Saab 9-3 and he fixed the damage, being very expensive (around $3,000) and my damage was around $400. See, most cars aren't what they used to be with bumpers and the rest: strong exterior, NOT cheap interior... now lots of cars (including my Ford Escape) has cheap parts :(

  • @KenjiroKitsumashi

The bumper doesn't matter, it's the crumple zone you need to worry about,

  • @racer17551 also which that Ford Escape doesn't even support 3 times as much for crumple zone in a rollover test

  • @LoveTheCity123

Your Lucky to be alive. Don't waste your life.....cause you only get one

  • @LoveTheCity123 The same happened to me except i was in a different situation. While i was cruising on the m4 in my xc90 v8 a dog came out of nowhere and ran across the highway. I swerved to miss the dog but I lost control and rolled over 10 times. I got a bit of head injuries because the glass on the sunroof shattered. I am lucky to still be alive. Volvo for life!

  • @LoveTheCity123 thank god you're okay pal! :)

    viva volvo

  • @LoveTheCity123

The reason you crashed is because you swerved so hard at those speeds.

  • @LoveTheCity123

Are you Jersey guido? How high on meth were you that day?

  • @LoveTheCity123 At least you didn't get hurt and that's the good thing! Was the car totaled by any chance? (If so, then I could understand.... if not.... wow!) But at least it protected you from a semi truck. (I remember when a truck almost hit my parents by switching toll lanes in the AC Expressway... and THANK GOD IT DIDN'T)
