@riffduck P.S. Saw Butch at a seminar when he explained his audition with the Basie Band. Seems he had listened to Sonny Paine so much he knew just about every lick on every chart. Said when he auditioned he just played what he remember Sonny had played......and Butch got the gig.
No me voy a cansar de admirar, el swing de la Big Band de Count Basie, que al ejecutar Corner Pocket, y con el fabuloso ritmo de Butch y los solos de Winston y Lawrence, es algo FABULOSO!!!!!!
@aVWgirl250 it was a while back, i can't quite remember, i know we did lil darlin. i wish we had learned sing sing sing before he came. i think I've watched the video of him playing sing sing sing a thousand times, and love listening and watching butch, not only a great musician, but showman as well, always has that querky smile lol
it's because of the trumpet that he had. it's a monette. they have a really unique sound obviously a lot like a flugelhorn in the lower register. they can cost between $10k--$30k
I agree, the trumpet does have an affect on the tone. However, Mr. Barnhart has always had (even before his Monette days) an extremely velvety, luscious, dark tone. If you go to the Mr. Monette's facebook or the Monette website you can watch other people try out the Ajna II trumpet (the model Mr. Barnhart is using in the video above) and they sound nothing like Scotty, tone-wise.
The band today does sound "different" from the old Basie band but not less than. Butch is the best drummer since Sonny Paine to play with the band, there are still top notch soloists playing in all sections, and Bill Hughes has the same kind and generous nature that Bill Basie had. Overall I'd say the Basie band is alive and well and still COOKIN'!
Interesting comment. I've been in the orchestra 17 years now and if you know the entire history of the band, really know the history, and have seen us live more than three or four times, then you would have an entirely different outlook on how things really are today. When was the last time you heard us live?
Oh I concur. Whenever you get new personnell into any group, the style and tone of the music changes. I bet that the Basie Orchestra of the early 1960s with Sonny Payne, et al would sound much different than the Basie group of the '70s and so forth. (this from a bassist of over 26 years' experience)
There is another version of "Corner Pocket" which you can find by putting just "count basie" in the search box and it should come up as the first video ... it has trumpet solos by That Jones (Basie 53-63) and Al Aarons (Basie 61-69), tenor sax solo by Frank Wess (Basie 53-64) and drummer Sonny Payne (Basie 55-65). The video was made sometime in 1962 and the band at that time was playing a swing style. This video made in Switzerland in 2004 is a bit more "boppy" ... proof ... the tenor solo.
No... I haven't Heard them in The last Few weeks.. But, the old basie band that I am talking about is the One with Thad Jones, Hank Aarons, Marshall Royall, Frank Faster.... and the rest of the guys.... They have a recording of this song on here check it out. This band sounds way different... still a great band but does not compare to the "old Basie".. with Basie himself in the rythm section u know?
GREAT....Don't compare things

Na, same brand, but not the same model. Wynton's trumpet is much lighter than that one.

These guys are good, but don't even get close to the real thing. I guess style and fashions change but I still far prefer the old stuff to this

I was lucky enough to take lessons with Butch Miles this summer. He's one of my favorite big band drummers, a great teacher, and a great person, too.
I think it's interesting how his style has changed since the 70s. He's so much more legato now, like Mel Lewis.

Grover died in 2003. Bill Hughes has been leading the band since then.

That is a shame. I met him in 1997, in Rhode Island with Dianne Shcuur. He was so nice and the band was so cool to meet.

Tony Suggs. Very much Basie influenced. His light style and demeanor very much is a reflection of the Late, Great Count.
