Well, for example: Ralph Waldo Emerson and say, Ayn Rand are not at all alike. If she took little bits and pieces from various philosophies/ideas, she would be a mass of contradictions. Don't get me wrong, I love this woman and admire what she's doing. She needs a consistent, non-contradictory philosophy, though.

You're saying that Ralph and Ayn didn't agree on anything? I'm sure they had lots of ideas, not just one or two each.

If they agreed that life is good, they agreed. Madalyn didn't mean to say they were alike. She meant that if someone has a good idea, take the idea alone if you don't like the person, or even if you do. We don't ignore good ideas just because they come from people we don't like.

Sounds consistent to me. Plus it wasn't her only philosophy.

And that's a lot like religion too - Mithraism, Judaism and Roman Civil religion might not have much in common, but say you were to invent a religion using elements of these [ ;) ], you would try to pick ones that were in agreement (and gloss over the contradictory ones in your scripture that it was too late to get rid of). We have the luxury of picking what works, and completely rejecting what doesn't and can change our minds. Worth reading about this woman - cos it's a crazy story.

The fact that you can "pick and choose" what works is trivial. Every idea comes down to fundamentals. Particular ideas or philosophic constructs are only fundamentals IN APPLICATION to the real world. I don't remember where I heard it, but: "You can't build a castle on fog."

ya im glad u posted her. i had heard about her but never heard her speak or anything she had to say. it is very educational and if you find anything else by her, by all means post it!  also, have u seen the movies 'Zeitgeist the Movie' and 'Zeitgeist Addendum'? If not, you should make a note to see them. best movies in explaining religious conspiracy as well some others.

I saw much of Zeitgeist and I found it to be too agreeable. lol I've seen too many shows and films that promote Atheism and a critique of religion. They bore me now. lol!

Not that I don't believe most of what she says... I just think there is a little more to humans' brains than anybody knows about. Prayer works, but only if a person truly believes that... entity, or object can grant/help them. And the people who disagree disagree because they've never tried it. Prayer isn't the first line of defense, it's for the desperate. The people who no longer have confidence...

But those damn Christians still annoy me.

Second I also know that prayer doesn't work because like millions of other Atheists, I tried prayer, and quite a lot. First of all, a fucking pencil could be a symbol, and it can have power if you give power to it. What I meant is that God is a symbol. Just like that pencil. Second, it works exclusively to give people emotional or mental strength. It has no 'magical' elements.

I didn't say it was a fucking magical power that could bring goodness in the world. It's to make people feel content or confident. It WORKS for the one who prays. To make them FEEL better, and it gives them strength. There's no divine creature at work there, it's just helping within that person's mentality... Like some sort of lame therapy. To seek forgiveness in one's self for something they feel they have done wrong. They think if the "ultimate authority" forgives them, then it's fine.

I remember seeing her on the talk shows when I was a kid in the late 70's and how my mom would rant about how she says there is no god. I was too young to have an educated opinion then but I eventually found her book "Why I Am An Atheist" at the public library when I was 17 and it totally made sense to me. I had never heard anyone so blunt and certain about the skepticism and doubt I had already begun to have and it was a relief to know that I wasn't the one who was crazy!
