Earlhoward... are you in Puerto Rico? I heard it is hard to get on the ferry's any tips you have will be great! We head over in 2 weeks... to PR... We are in Luquillo for 10 days. I have family there but if you have any info on Culebra that would be great!
@joshuahtait Hey Guy, no I'm in Los Angeles, but you are correct -- it takes time and patience to get the ferry to Culebra. But it is doable and cheap -- and once you finally get on board and head to Culebra, it's usually a great trip! And again, can't beat the $2 price.
@guietzie You are so right!! We took the plane this time a few weeks ago. Fast and est, a beautiful ride. AND, we got there BEFORE the ferry, so we got to choose from the best spots on Flamenco Beach. I'll never take the ferry again!
@joshuahtait If you are going for a day trip to Culebra and take the ferry, you will need to be at the ferry ticket office in Fajardo to line up by 7am. (departs at 9am). You can also get the tickets in advance, if you drive to the ferry office on a prior day.
I'm staying at the embassy suites in San Juan... What should I expect from this city...? this is a spring break trip with friends. I have heard San Juan can get a bit rough but I've been to Miami before and I don't see San Juan being any different? Thanks!!
Hey have a great time! San Juan is similar to most major US cities -- don't go looking for drugs and the areas that harbor them and you should be fine.
The tourist areas have a large police presence. One thing to get used to -- you will see the police lights flashing at night -- that is not an indication of a crime, as it is in the US, just a method to increase the police visability.
If you hear a siren and see lights, that's a different story.
If you drive out to a restaurant or club in the area and a person asks to watch your car for a buck or two, do it. I've found that you actually have a person who will then keep an eye on your car. Or course, they are taking advantage, but after saying no a few times, I realized it was just easier to give a buck and have a little peace of mind.
my parents are taking our family to culebra this spring and we are so excited, we're going to go to the rainforests in PR and try to do some scubadiving in culebra. the only problem is, we don't know if that can happen, as none of us are certified and we don't know if any places around there even instruct or assist or even rent scuba gear. on the other hand, i know a bit of spanish so i'm pretty excited!
Check out Culebra Divers. They offered discovery dives which don't require certification a few years back. I was supposed to do it, biut ended up having too much fun beaching and off-shore snorkeling.
My other bite of advice is to avoid the ferry to Culebra, if possible. But, if you are taking it, make sure you are the 2 hours before the first one leaves or take the one that leaves next.
@Lighthouse713 The crowds for the ferry to Culebra are huge and getting bigger. And, if it's a local holiday, you could encounter busloads of 200 school kids heading over on limited seats.
five stars! I am taking my son to PR lest year. We certainly will be going to Culebra. I hope you dont mind if I contact you to get more info on the island and ferry info.
Thank you!!! Wow, I'm jealous!!! Enjoy your new life in paradise and live everyday like you're on vacation!! Don't get too used to things that you don't want to drive a bit (or take a ferry). You will be enchanted with Culebra!
I love your video. I've been to Culebra 3 years in a row and I miss it from the second the plane takes off. Thanks for the pick-me-ups via this video! We always relax so much we forget to take any video!
I can so relate to your feelings! I just got back, and although I didn't set foot on Culebra, other than Dakity Reef and Playa Flamenco (we boated in twice), I still have some great HD footage of the bay, reef and water fothcoming. Enjoy your return!!
I got an HD Sony for this last trip. I've posted a few, including the cowfish at Flamenco. Once I get busy, I'll make some new videos of the latest snorkeling at Flamenco.
I've always enjoyed snorkeling there, thought it to be decent. This time I was blown away, came in by catamaran and snorkeled in the area that would be to the extreme if entering from the parking area. AM AMAZING snorkeling. I saw and captured on video a moray eel -- until it jumped out of the reef at me! jajaja!
Thanks Ariel! Red Beach was closed, but we spent most of the day at Blue Beach and the little beaches nearby! And the other day we spent most of it on Playa Negrita, the little black sand beach on an island full of white sand beaches. BOTH WERE AMAZING! What a contrast.
Both are wonderful and unique. Culebra can be explored in a little less time. But each is worth seeing.
Almost all rental car agencies forbid taking cars from Puerto Rico on the ferry to the little islands. Even if you find an agency that will allow you to take the car off Puerto Rico, the residents have priority for the car ferry and you can be bumped off with no notice.
He ido a Culebra desde bebe prácticamente.

But, there are many rental car agenices on both Culebra and Vieques. Rent a JEEP for the rough roads! On Culebra, Carlos Jeep Rental is the best.
You can also rent a scooter!
