  • I don't remember seeing this movie, I guess I'll have to look for it.

  • MOMS MABLEY {1894~1975}

In real life, her name was Loretta Mary Aiken. Also, a little known fact was that she had been a lesbian since the age of 27.

  • @giantart actually he looks like Gregory Hines to me... look at him again and then look up his pic from Waiitng to Exhale

  • Great acting.

  • SeeDebi Morgan from All My Children fame at 3.36-know those dimples anywhere! Great post awesome words which still resonates otday! Comedy don't have to have profanity or Afr. Americans portrayed in an ignorant light! How I miss those presence of those wise gramdmama or nana types today. They need to be revered. And nothing beats talent Go MomsMabley! Have to find this movie!

  • Let the words and wisdom of Moms Mabley reach deep into the souls of all of us and bring out the truth that humanity is the legs and the thighs of God's Great Chicken. She spoke in terms of race because of the racism of the day, which was massive. All God's children.

I was a child when she revealed the truth that the adults were lying to the children. Turns out she was right. They are still lying to the children. I pray that stops soon.

GOD BLESS MOMS MABLEY WHEREVER SHE IS IN THE UNIVERSE.

  • @cureworks Thank you for that great comment

  • what happen to black films?

just to let you all know im writing

  • @marcuscombs1532 See the films of Melvin Van Pebbels...brilliant! I saw him perform live at the Sundance film festival in about 1992.

  • 5:29 YouTube video: clip featuring Moms Mabley from the film Amazing Grace.

March 19, 1894: birth of Moms Mabley, American comedian (d. 1975).

  • the rapper Game's father@3:21

  • Beautiful. I really miss those old women who taught me so much when I was coming up. RIP Aunt Pal.

  • SISTA'S AND BROTHA'S GOT THEM FRO'S TIGHT........BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE USE AFRO SHEEN!!!!! LOL

  • moms mabely is one of the best female comics.......

  • Moms rules!

  • @396M That's Moses Gunn. POPS from the Wayans Bros is John Witherspoon.

  • I love this movie, and I was surprised to see that Netflix actually had it. I watched it the other nite and am going to watch it again. "First of all I aint your sister." LOL hillarious

  • Is the Mayor POPS from the Waynes Brothers?

  • @396M It's Carl from "Good Times"

  • @396M The actor is Moses Gunn. Played a character in Shaft and many other roles in the 70s. Most proud of the development of his deep commanding voice. I knew him slightly when he lived in the West Village. We ate the same place. Very nice guy.

  • Who care about Antwi Akom? He is a liberal hack from the city the of San Francisco that gave us a liberal idiot like Nancy Polosi. It is obvious that he offers nothing worthwhile to society. If he did he would have a real job instead of sucking CA dry teaching a class that has no relevance, Jackie "Moms" Mabley was a comedic genius. She may not have been highly educated like the good doctor but at least she was not a leach on society,

  • Note a young Debbi Morgan at 3:37.

  • she looks like keyshia coles' mother

  • I remember in the 70s when folks wore nose rings; then it went out of style till now and now they pierce most things. so yep piercing been going on.

  • This is to me the best darn scene in the WHOLE movie; Moms is making this speech for these young folks to support this mayor and hon, it's the delivery. Sadly, Moms died not long after this. and you got more folks out there that don't know squat on this lady but if you want to know, LOOK HER UP! then get a copy of this movie like I did and fall out like I do from time to time. be blessed.

  • Could someone tell me what the movie is about?

  • @SuniDays87 I can; It's about an old woman who comes home to fine that the house next door to her is occupied by a black man and his wife supposedly running for mayor, but basically he's a dummy for the man to divert votes his way and his reward for it was $10 million. someone she finds out and gets it straight.

  • What a powerful speech that is, how true it is. Not just for the black community, but for all people, from all walks of life. Use the brains and talent that God gave you. We are all linked together, we all have our part to love and take care of each other. Bless of all you, and bless Moms Mabley, I remember as a boy watching her on tv in the 70's. She was a great influence in the field of comedy. R.I.P. Moms your journey is done, you've touched our hearts. Now you can rest.

  • I loved watching the late great Moms on various TV shows back in the 60's & 70's. What a delightfully funny lady she was! This looks like it's a fun movie. THANKS for posting this clip....may ALL your wishes & dreams come true in the New Year!!! :)

  • Saw this video and had to tell this story. There was a woman who looked just like Moms when I was a kid, named Mrs. Macall who lived next door. We all lived in a very poor neighborhood, and she kinda took all the neighborhood kids in, black or white. While other kids was out stealing or doing drugs, alot of us kids was at Mrs. Macalls playing games, and listening to her preach to us about being good kids. She would spend what little money she had to feed us all everyday. God what a woman.

  • 1:21 Sexy

  • This was Moms' last will and testament. She died a year or so after this film was made. This was a moving and beautiful end to her life and career. Bless her.

  • I love the ending of the movie where Moms says that we are all her children and for us to turn this mother out!

  • I'll be damned,I just found an album of hers last weekend in a box of old records!

  • Gay community is proud of her!

  • At 0:46 was that Melvin from Sanford and Son?

  • yes

  • She was raped at the age of 15 and had 2 kids she put up for adoption. She died leaving behind 4 kids and 5 grandkids, but never married and spent most of her life as a lesbian.

    JACKIE "Moms" MABLEY (1894-1975)

  • Yeah that rape and all that social injustice fucked her up good--yet she still let her talent shine the best she could! Bless her.

  • wow, interesting! is there any bio written of her that i could get hold of? i have 2 of her LPs...love her song on side 1 of "Moms Breaks it Up"

  • You might consider going to wikipedia. My parents and parents used to listen to old vinyl records of her.

  • HER VOICE SO COOL!

  • LMFAO

  • Moms Mabley is featured in an extremely rare movie called "It's Our Thing," released on lp as "The Isley Brothers Live At Yankee Stadium" (1969 T-Neck/Buddah Records). Although Mom's performance is not included on the 2-album set, her performance is the highlight of the concert movie, one of the first live music concept movies of the day. The movie only had a limited regional run and was reportedly never released on video or DVD. Does anyone have this historical performance of Moms? Please post!

  • Is that a very young Jessie Jacson in the audience at.53 seconds ?

  • Nope.

  • That was the tap dancer/actor, the late Gregory Hines!

  • Thanks

  • i never new she was a lesbian!

    creepy

  • Yep she was!!! Its listed on famous black african american gays and lesbians

  • @hisawesomecreation oh boy....that must mean its true then!!......NOt!!.....in fact in her "own word" she had a thing for "young men"..(not women).. and that was the scandalous stuff in her career....u might wanna listen to some of her comedy routines.she talks about all this.....

  • Yeah..that was Debbie Morgan..

    R.I.P Moms Mabley...

  • was that debbie morgan sitting in the audience? Much love to the first lady (that I know) of comedy.

  • Yeah I think she had a lil part in the movie she always played the crack head teen on either good times or whats happening

  • If any of yall can, please get the movie Amazing Grace with Moms in it; This speech is so good. Obama would have wished she was still living to tell it again. Please, see this movie.

  • Tell'em Sistah!!!This reminds me of when Harold Washington ran for the Mayor of Chicago and won !But past away soon after! The city hasn't been the same since!!!!

    Thank you for posting!!!!

  • I haven't seen this in years! My grandmother turned me on to her, they used to spin her comedy LP's back in the day during those Friday night card parties. Good times, good times...

Look at the tears in her eyes, she felt that speech. I'm sure she prayed that one of us, somewhere, would actually hear it and take heed.

We miss you, Moms Mabley, rest in peace...

  • 1974

  • That was something good.

  • the girl at :50 with the big hair and the girl at 1:30 are beautiful. i love black women.

  • lol was kindof a joke, cuz I am one of the "Kids today" knowm sayin...

  • God Bless Moms !!!! She was before her time!!! AWeome!!!!!!!THis is a great movie!!

  • Love it!! Thanks for posting!!

  • I saw the movie, and the crazy part was she passed away before Part 2 was supposed to begin taping. She was gonna use the maid uniform to infiltrate the White House. AMAZING GRACE gives us a glimpse of politics at a local level.

  • Wow! I saw this movie as well. Just reading what you posted about part 2 made me smile. I could actually see her in the white house doing what she did best. That's Moms right there!

  • It's a pleasure to see an icon such as Moms Mabley. I've never seen a picture of her, but my great grandmother use to talk about her. Wow! I am awed!

  • I can only imagine how she would feel about Barack Obama.

  • Moms would have gone nutz and more nutz for and about President-elect Obama!! In most of her recording, particularly the later ones, she always covered 2 subjects faithfully, loving young people and black people being more than what we were (then). I'm a minister and everytime I get the chance I use one of her quotes just to get a point over or as a reference (um the clean versions of course). I love this clip because its so relevant and pertinent to us today. She is our Moms!

  • did i see a woman with a nose ring? they had body piercing bacc than i wonder why ppl make it an issue now! if itz been out a long time ago

  • wow my dad took me to see this movie at the Drive-In and it was great. Thanks for whoever found her. The new generation needs to hear her, she is very funny and you will see where alot of the up and comers found some of their stuff, from Moms.

  • precious moms.

  • I see Debbie Moore

  • You mean Debbie Morgan? With the "dimples"? (smile)

  • Thank you for the correction. I meant to say Debbie Morgan lol

  • It's all good friend!

She sure is cute too! ha ha! I spotted her too for a fraction of a second.....looked for more, but ....... (smile)

  • Your professor is professing a lie. Maybe it is best for you to get a better teacher; if not, you could end up being a manifested lie as your master. And if he would do the proper research without condemnation, he would understand that comedians are people who have come from pain, have overcome it and have been healed enough to cause others to laugh at it. Your teacher is high on intellect but has no common sense. I grieve for your future if you stay in his presence.

  • Bro. You know you are RIGHT? What MAKES people as certifiable and honorable as they are, is what they have come thru and HOW they came thru it and live to TELL and share what THEY have learned with others. NO one has been 'unproblematic' and those on 'witch hunts' to dig up things about others are secretly exposing and trying to punish their OWN and have not learned yet how to resolve and put it away. THAT is problematic IN ITSELF and to spread it as poison is the signal OF the sickness!

  • Comment removed

  • Not familiar with that we'll have to look into it.

    Thanks!!!!

  • More important is how you feel about Moms Mabley: what are YOUR thoughts on her? Screw Antwi Akom on EVERY LEVEL. Mabley did so much for civil rights both in front and behind the camera and microphone. Anyone who states Mabley is problematic levels more than just an insult. So, again I ask, what do you have to say about Mabley? Please don't answer if you only know her by this clip, you won't be able to give a definitive response, no wonder why you defer to the daft Antwi. Moms 4-ever, peace!

  • @lcejaurena

problematic i dont think so! practical and conscience of this world of deceptive leaders and parasitic elites. What people say in theory they need to do in principle and she demonstrated that clearly. She always emphases on love and strength to eradicate the barriers on social ignorance and intolerance

  • @91BROWNIE91

Thats fine- but at what expense? At reproducing stereotypes of Black women and further of women of color? I understand the importance of establishing ways to communicate to audiences but at the same time, i'm going to be critical of the ways that we are perceived and acted out

  • @91BROWNIE91

yea but at what expense? of that of reproducing the stereotypes of women of color and Black women? I understand the importance of communicating messages but I also am going to be critical in the ways in which media continues to reproduce controlling images that only feeds the social ignorance and intolerance

  • I remember answering the Casting Call thru a summer job I was working in NYC(34 years ago). Wow! I haven't changed a bit :)

  • I see angie hubbard in this clip.

    She has been around forever.

  • Makes you wanna go cop the movie. We need more black movies like this.
