having an eight string allows you to have the low end (f# while still allowing you too keep your e). A lot of people also use the 8 string as a 7 string tuning with an added high A.

@brandonthuck as well as having the low F# or high A (depending on tuning) extended range guitars tend to have more resonance because of the lower strings not so much when palm muting of course but alot of jazz players use them and when fretting chords or letting certain string ring the lower strings vibrate and give more resonance to the intrument

Depending on the guitarist, it's sometimes distracting to stare at your fretboard watching what your fingers are doing; you get tripped up by what you see and you aren't thinking about the song. It's not "looking away" as much as it is staring off into space thinking about what he's doing, or what he's going to be doing next.
